After a lot of research, I finally decided to go with Sony. These speakers are an absolute powerhouse the sound is crystal clear and the bass is clean and heavy with no distortion.( It can get loud like Really loud) The Dolby Atmos is kinda good I guess, although to get a full surround sound effect you would need a set of extra satellite speakers, but I was very content with this. There were few issues with the sound during the initial setup sometimes there would be a delay or lag with the sound while watching youtube or Netflix, however there is a simple solution to this, Secure Connect your sub with the soundbar from the soundbar settings and also make sure to enable 4K pass through from your television, after making those minor changes there was no audible lag ... MoreAfter a lot of research, I finally decided to go with Sony. Other than that it's topnotch.

The last point is no option of rear speakers! Sony now sell a unit that is capable of this, why do they not make a software fix so that users of the HT-ST5000 can also add the option rear speakers? a shame if you ask me. If i had my time again i think i would have taken my £1500 and purchased a group of separates but only hindsight is twenty-twenty

Good when it works however has reliability issues
5 October 2019

First off, this bar is very expensive and when it works it's great but there's issues with the sub disconnecting in addition to issues arising from regular use and longevity if you read other reviews. I had two of these. The first sounded good but had been damaged in transit so a replacement was ordered. This bar has on screen display is built in and the video processor ran red hot on the top centre of the it's casing which I'm led to believe is one of the core issues with the bar. The sub was extremely unpredictable in some scenes namely scene two of Dunkirk and it simply couldn't handle it.The second bar...the sub wouldn't connect no matter what. Tested in store and was found to be faulty. Gutted as I really wanted one of these as they do sound great but there ... MoreFirst off, this bar is very expensive and when it works it's great but there's issues with the sub disconnecting in addition to issues arising from regular use and longevity if you read other reviews. If you buy this then you take the chance of it working or not but one thing is essential... Richer sounds six year warranty is a must have!!! Do your research before you consider buying this or find a store to demo it in. As usual Dale Euan Sam and Anis were amazing as always in the Newcastle store.

Great for films, not sure about games or music!
29 November 2018

Ok, Generally it sounds great for films, although I still need to mess about with the settings to max out the surround and Atmos. My Windows 10 PC found the sound bar and installed Dolby Atmos. Great. As far as Bravia Sync..well my Sony 3DTV and 3D Blu-ray doesn't pick it up despite having all plugged into the sound bar. Don't think the bar has MHL which might be the issue and Bluetooth doesn't pick out the TV and visa versa. Sky Q picks up Dolby Atmos through the bar (if you have the 2Gig version) Sound quality doesn't match my aging Arcam A85 and CD92 CD player through B&W CDM1s speakers. However it ain't bad at all for what you get. Overall it sounds as good as your gonna get out of a soundbar if you can't oblige a separate speaker setup. Films will blow you away and the sub is stonking and overkill if you max it out. Got all the Dolby and DTS settings you can have currently (as far as I know) although not readily obvious when you put a film on. Occasionally the setting may show on screen at the start of a film via BR but you can select it via the remote. It just picks it up. Always wanted a good surround bar as I can't have the full works due to space and the Mrs.. I'll let you work that one out ;-)Paid £1200 notes and quick delivery from RS. Recommended.

Home Button Doesnt work out of the box
19 November 2021

Read up on this unit (unfortunately I didn't). These units have known firmware bugs and many issues arise because of it. My soundbar out of the box didn't work with the home button. This was an open box item not refurbished. I am super disappointed with this product. I have liked Sony from day one ever since I was a kid. But I will no longer be buying anything Sony after this mess. Such an expensive product and to have all these known defects. What a Shame.I will also go on to say, although I cannot access the Home screen and manipulate the settings, the sound is not that loud and honestly pretty dismal. We had a Vizio soundbar before this one and it worked for 4 years with no issues, and that was $400 (soundbar, 2 speakers and sub), this $1000 just for the ... MoreRead up on this unit (unfortunately I didn't). Out of the box this kit is frankly amazing, you can see why it gets the reviews and quite deservedly so, but then it starts to get a little less impressive......It starts with the occasional pop or crack in the sound, you wonder if it is a Sky issue or a TV issue, the pop occurs more often and then the device starts to turn itself off after a few hours (in the second of the rugby games this weekend). This confuses the TV and a complete restart is required.Mine has been back for repair, was OK again for a couple of months and the whole cycle has started again. To be fair, John Lewis has been amazing in dealing with the issue. They told me if it fails again it will be replaced or I can choose something else. I am sadly at that point. So far the sound quality is very good for a sound bar system. To me its just as good as a surround system with its multiple speakers. The UI(user's interface) settings onscreen settings. Takes some practice for those that are not tech pros but fare enough to understand atleast for me. It is dolby built inn height speakers but requires a device that enables its function features. Like an Xbox system a pc or gaming laptop or any device that is dolby capable. The sound even at low literally shaked my room a little that is intense at volume 50 or higher. It is wireless for the subwoofer [less cord connection] and display led screen helps to know what function your operating on. The Sony HT-S5000 Is A Keeper
7 January 2021

TL, DR- I recently sold my Samsung HW-Q80R soundbar to a friend so that I could upgrade to the Sony HT-S5000 soundbar. Well, I have had it for one month now and it is a keeper. I like it's sound quality and stronger bass better than the HW-Q80R and it also plays nicer, via ARC/CEC, than the Samsung did with my Sony XBR-65Z9D TV and AppleTV 4K. However, the Dolby Atmos effect is only a very minor improvement over the HW-Q80R.The HW-Q80R did not play nicely with my Sony Z9D TV and ATV-4K and at least once per day I had to unplug the Samsung soundbar to get everything working properly. It was a daily pain. Now the Samsung did have a great sound, but after it's most recent update the S/W seemed even weaker and did not give me that WOW that I was looking for. It was a daily pain. Now the Samsung did have a great sound, but after it's most recent update the S/W seemed even weaker and did not give me that WOW that I was looking for. Since I did not want to run speaker wire around the room I had to stay with a soundbar. Now this Sony Ht-S5000 has been around a while, but it is still Sony's top end soundbar and is still receiving firmware upgrades. The sound quality is an improvement over the Samsung and the bass is way deeper. This soundbar decodes ALL of the Dolby & DTS formats. Everything sound richer to me. After one month of use, I have had no issues with my set-up and everything works perfectly together. This Atmos effect is okay and is probably the best I am going to find in a soundbar, but don't expect it to compare to a true surround sound system. After tweaking my settings I have got the overhead Atmos sounds working pretty good in my opinion. The ARC/CEC work perfectly also, which is a great bonus. Here are my current Dolby Atmos settings:*Front speakers: -1.5 dbs*Overhead speakers: +6.0 dbs*S/W: +6.0 dbs (I then set the subwoofer volume to +8)**Surround sound field: Movie; Voice +2***Make sure to measure you speaker & S/W distances: front of soundbar to main listening position (add two feet), S/W to main listening position (actual distance), and top of soundbar to ceiling (start with actual distance). The reason for 4 stars: Expensive. A cheap remote. The remote is the same as you find on Sony's low end soundbars. This unit runs warm to the touch, which worries me down the road in regards to longevity.#sweepstakes

Top sound but at a price

I bought this a couple of weeks ago. I wanted immersive sound for movies and quality sound for my music collection without having to fill the room with speakers. It is expensive, but definitely delivers. Sound is clear with no noticeable distortion as you pump up the volume. It can play all the latest sound formats and has a wide range of adjustments to get the best possible sound whatever the format or source. I read the What Hifi review before buying these speakers and agree with everything it says. My only criticism is that the different sound modes have to be scrolled through sequentially which is a bit annoying, and could have been easily addressed by additional buttons on a slightly larger remote control. Otherwise it is really hard to fault. I’ve tried ... MoreI bought this a couple of weeks ago. Spend the money if you can afford it, it is worth every penny.
