This is a great product that enables one to truly take advantage of the benefits of the 50 mm lens - at an extremely affordable price point. The only issue I have experienced is that the auto focus mode is a bit jittery and noisy at times. I have, however, been able to deal with that issue using the Manual mode.

I decided to wait a few weeks and put the lens through projects requiring a 50mm lens. I was completely impressed with the capabilities of this lens in relation to the price. It delivered crisp tack sharp images over and over without requiring minute adjusting on my part.I have read other reviews if this lens where the reviewed complained that is was "plastic" feeling. It doesn't matter how it feels, it matters how it delivers image quality. This lens is ideal if you need a 50mm prime, and most people do!

Good product for its price. Lens Sony SAL50F18 50mm f/1.8 allows you to create artistic images in automatic and manual shooting modes. When you reach the desired aperture get a sharp image with blurred or sharp background. In testing with a full-frame lenses significant differences have not been identified. A great lens for shooting portraits. The lens has a special pattern. Eloquently conveys the colors and lighting of the subject. Fast and precise focusing. The quality of the pictures above, than at use of a standard lens SAL-1855. The purchase of a more expensive lens SAL-50F14 appropriate, if in the future it is planned to purchase a digital camera with a full frame sensor.
Serious amatuer photographers on a budget will love this lens. Great photos are captured with its f/1.8 aperature. Great for cropped-sensor cameras, it takes stunning portraits, and its fixed focal length is a winner for those days when you need to carry light for your street photography outings. It boasts a super smooth (and quiet) autofocus. While it doesn't affect the performance of this lens whatsoever, it doesn't come with a lens hood. It would have been nice to include one for that time when you absolutely need it.
very nice lens, extremely versatile. not meant for filming it has an extremely loud AF motor in it. if you do use it to film then you might need an external mic or a camera that has in body AF motors in it. very quick shipping very good packing to keep the lens safe, the box was mutilated by the post folks but the lens was unharmed. it shipped with a rear lens cover but not a front one, it did have a 49mm minolta uv filter on it for protection. i would have preferred the hard plastic lens cap to this. over all this was a wise purchase.
The only reason I am giving 3 stars is because I was able to return the thing and receive a refund within 2 days of sending it back. Cex staff is quite helpful with this. One more thing, the lens worked fine otherwise.
Good Points: Weight, Price, Bright, Compact, High quality picture, Very sharp lense even on f2.2. I test that lense and sony 50mm f1.4 with my old camera a700 and bokeh i like better here with 50 f1.8.That my second lense, first i sell with my old camera, but when buy sony a77 i bought minolta beercan, zeiss 24-70 and that fix 50mm f1.8. If u re newstarter, that is best lense to get good portraits and that now are really cheap!Improvement Points: Plastic plastic plastic... Out of blend. Have some abberation if f = 1.8.
The 50MM 1.8 is a must have for any Sony shooter that is serious about their love of photography! Spectacular color and razor sharp photos combined with excellent low light performance make this lens a real bargain at Sony's selling price! It is also excellent for shooting video and you'll really appreciate the lack of lens noise! My wife and I shoot over 200,000 photos a year in our wedding and concert photography businesses. I used to be very unimpressed with Sony's lenses. I tested most of them at 1 time or another and the only ones that I could get behind were the "G" lenses and the CZs. Things have really changed recently. IMO Sony has really stepped up their game with the 50MM 1.8, 35MM 1.8, 16-50MM 2.8, and the 18-135 lenses. I'm amazed at what a difference ... Learned a lot from this lens when it comes to composing and shooting objects. With that said, this lens like everyone says is perfect for low light and/or shooting objects, nice bokeh etc. However the main reason i purchased this lens is for portraits basing it on other reviews i thought this lens would work for me but it didn't. This lens on APS-C is not that great for portrait as expected it makes some people's faces look wide. Shoot with caution when shooting people with this lens. I'm jumping to the next 1 on the line which is 85mm.

Sony SAL50F18 - Lens - 50 mm - f/1.8 DT Sam - Sony A-Type - for α DSLR-A230, A330, A380, A550, SLT-A55, A57, A58, A65, A77; α NEX F3D, F3K, F3Y; α1; α3000
The 50mm f/1.8 DT AF Lens from Sony may look like a standard prime lens, but being a lens designed for cropped APS-C sized DT-mount cameras, it is actually a short telephoto lens with the 35mm equivalent of a 75mm focal length. The wide f/1.8 aperture, and seven circular aperture blades, provide excellent out of focus, "bokeh" background effects as well as faster shutter speeds for low-light shooting. Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto foucs (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens. Instead, AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the focusing lens group directly, helping to assure smooth AF response. ED (Extra-low Dispersion) GlassTo reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors. Circular ApertureBecause aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.
