Sony SEL28F20 FE 28mm f/2 Lens
An excellent choice as a second lens to supplement a basic lens kit, this full-frame 28mm wide-angle prime features a bright F2.0 maximum aperture and outstanding overall optical performance. Advanced optics deliver excellent sharpness right out to the image edges plus beautifully smooth bokeh when needed. A maximum aperture of F2.0 makes it easier to shoot clear images handheld indoors or in dim lighting. An inner focus mechanism achieves stable, quiet autofocus operation that is ideal for movies as well as stills. This lens is in excellent condition with only the lightest signs of use. The optics are clean, clear with no marks or scratches. There is an extremely minor amount of dust within the lens. The lens barrel shows only the lightest cosmetic marks. The focus ring is smooth and in great condition. The lens mount is in good condition.

I usually use full frame for pro, portrait and street work. And I mainly use two lenses, a zoom and a prime. I wanted to have a smaller lighter camera for traveling and trying to find a similar two-lens set up. The Sony a6500 was my camera of choice and this purchase was to take care of the ‘super-sharp F2-range prime lens’ part of my bag.The lens choices are what make this smaller camera difficult to get lenses for. If you want them small to coincide with the size of the camera (and anything below an f4) you will likely pay a premium for most of the sweet spot fields of view. I would have preferred trying the Sony 24mm 1.8 (36mm Full Frame) lens but the price tag stopped me. At least for now. Since this is a travel lens and I use the Canon for pro work, I want to keep an eye on the budget.Unfortunately, after trying it out for a few weeks, I just got annoyed with the field of view of this 28mm and returned it especially at this price point. I need a slightly wider lens to get both the portraits I want to do on the fly (which this 28mm is great for) but also, some street work where the wider angle will help when shooting more than one person or buildings/landscapes. (Incidentally, I am going to be trying out the Sigma 19mm 2.8 which I hope falls in that sweet spot for a travel prime. If that doesn’t work, I may just bite the bullet for the Sony 24mm 1.8.)All that said, the images came out super sharp and with an f2, it works well indoors and you can push the lower ISOs without much grain. I would totally recommend this lens. It's a bit pricey for the non-pro photographer but if you have the cash and it suits your needs, I can't imagine anyone not being happy with this purchase.

Lightweight reasonably fast lens that is unobtrusive. I'd been using Leicas for street, documentary work since my first purchase in Turkey in 1959 while in the USAF. Lens used the most was 35mm but wanted wider. Went through 3 bodies with 3 focal lengths. This year, 2019, decided to go to the SONY 7R3 with this f/2 28mm lens. Fantastic for street work! I have to say that this beats the Leica film cameras hands down. And for the money, now at a fixed income, cannot possibly go to Leica digitals. I've adapted some Canon digital lenses for longer focal lengths and zooming but this little lens is my favorite to carry anyplace I go. The large sensor allows huge blowups so a long lens is not really necessary for street work.

I bought this lens to use with my Sony Alpha a9. I needed something wide, prime, sharp, and light/compact for travels + run & gun shooting. I shoot fashion, beauty, and artistic portraits and this lens has been AWESOME for that. What I love about this lens is that it's fairly tiny, keeps the weight down. I pack this with my Sony FE Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 55mm F1.8 ZA & Sony FE 85mm F1.8 lenses. Not exactly a replacement for the true 35mm, but if you're looking for something with a wider aperture than the Sony FE Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm F2.8 ZA lens, this would it. It's very sharp even at f/2, and you can close it down to 2.8 to make it even sharper. The focus is quick and accurate as well, even in low-light from my experiences. The only thing I would note for your awareness about this is that it is has some distortion to it, so I recommend shooting in RAW when using this (though ideally you should always be shooting in RAW), so that you can use profile correction in Lightroom to fix it. It'll look great after you do that! For the price, quality, and performance, this is a must-have in your kit. =

One trouble with many lenses made for full frame is their size and sometimes how noisy they are. In this case it is quiet and compact. Suitable for stills and video, blogging and events. F2 is fast enough for low light, but not as good as faster primes suited to low light. It is a good standard due to standard wide angle, so you can easily crop to slightly closer focus equivalent or use to great affect in crop mode. A nice option for aps-c cameras too, but not the cheapest option in that area. You can get this for a similar price used as the Sony 20mm f2.8 aps-c lens. But it is about the size of the Sony 50mm fe lens. Note that used price on Sony 50mm Fe is less, but it makes more noise which can be slightly annoying for video. Or standard on crop sensors.
If you are used to Leica 28mm Summicron lenses, this Sony lens is not an equivalent. But for an autofocus lens, it is really compact, making it a nice reportage lens with your full-frame Sony E mount cameras. It is soft at f/2 even in the central areas, but it draws a decent bokeh wide open, so you can do shallow DoF shots, if you are willing to apply some selective sharpening in post-processing. But stop down to f/2.8, and images become significantly sharper, like somebody flipped a switch. Obviously, the bokeh also gets a little coarser. So it is a tradeoff. By f/5.6, sharpness is achieved in nearly the entire frame. If you are shooting landscape, plan on stopping down to f/11, and using a tripod to keep the ISO down. This can be a very good landscape lens if used right, although if you want the ultimate image quality for landscapes, you need to consider a higher end lens like a Sony G Master. But for the relatively modest price, the FE 28mm f/2 lens delivers excellent value. So the 5 stars is based on a combination of its compact size/weight, optical performance, and price. But based just on optical performance, I would probably give it 3.75 stars, maybe 4 for its performance at f/2.8 and beyond.

In subdued lighting, such as an overcast sky or shooting in shadows, the images get soft at any aperture. Images were often (slightly) over-exposed. Nightshots were typically soft and unpleasing.(2) Samyang 35mm f/2.8 autofocus – excellent sharpness for still subjects. However, it did not focus well for shooting moving subjects, such as people during street photography. Night shots were usually softer than those from the Sony 28mm.(D) Back to the Sony 28mm:- (For me) 28mm is an excellent focal length- Excellent performance in a variety of settings- Light weight, compact size, and low price – this lens fulfills the promise of the mirror-less philosophy.
Initially I paired the almost perfect Sony FE 55/1.8ZA with my A7 but the focal length did not suit my preferred shooting style. I watched the gradual release of alternative new FE full-frame lenses but nothing was tempting or affordable, particularly since Sony strayed from their initial concept of a compact mirrorless system with bulky lenses typical of DSLRs. Finally this FE 28mm f/2 appeared and immediately appealed based on reasonable price, size, weight and balance on the A7. The reviews were positive enough to overcome my caution about sample variation from QA issues Sony seems to have had on certain lenses, so I went ahead with the purchase. The handling was just right and the lack of OSS is a bonus in my opinion, with less to go wrong in this era of all-electronic lenses. My first impressions of image quality were very positive, with excellent contrast, color saturation, center sharpness and bokeh. There is zero flare, even shooting directly into the sun. Only two optical flaws disappointed me - distortion and chromatic aberration. Correction was no problem with the RAW files but this processing degraded sharpness at the edges somewhat so they are not perfect like the 55/1.8. In fact, distortion correction is automatically applied in camera to the RAW file with no choice to turn it off in the menu. Anyway, after more shooting I got over my initial disappointment and came to understand and work with the personality of this little jewel. It is now fixed to my A7 as the perfect walkabout lens. Clearly the exotic 9-element optical design with two ED and three aspherical elements contributes to to the rich color and image pop. No regrets.
Im used to using telephoto style lenses and this small compact lens won me over to Sonys native line of wide-angle lenses. 28mm feels like the perfect travel lens. Great for self-portraits, video, and adding context, environment, and storytelling to an image or video. The f2 aperture is excellent for semi-lowlight areas. Almost instant in many use cases as Im using (AF-C) continuous focus, on a Sony ILCE-7RM2 (A7RII) with focus speed set to normal or fast for photos and slow for video. Love this little lens! Here are a few photos to see bokeh and minimum focusing distance. Hopefully this is helpful to anyone looking at this lens.
I was excited to try an in-house (Sony-only) developed lens on my A7Rii, and this lens was garnering some rave reviews. Unfortunately for me, this lens doesn't cut the mustard. The unfortunate thing about camera sensors becoming so advanced is that optical deficiencies become more immediately apparent. Comparing center-image sharpness between this lens and other primes, the 28mm f/2 just doesn't stack up, at any aperture. In my (non-scientific) experience, the 35 f/2.8 is sharper wide open than the 28 f/2 lens is at f/5.6. My gripes: -Really soft wide open -Very prone to chromatic aberration at lower apertures -SEVERE barrel distortion (see sample picture) -Pretty weak construction (not even close to weather sealed, easy pathway for dust to get into the lens ... MoreI was excited to try an in-house (Sony-only) developed lens on my A7Rii, and this lens was garnering some rave reviews. My gripes: -Really soft wide open -Very prone to chromatic aberration at lower apertures -SEVERE barrel distortion (see sample picture) -Pretty weak construction (not even close to weather sealed, easy pathway for dust to get into the lens internals) On the bright side: -Fairly inexpensive -Compact and lightweight -Has a logical hood/lens cap/filter ring orientation compared to the 35mm f/2.8 I read through a few lengthy in-depth reviews online before pulling the trigger on this lens, and I'm still not sure what they're on about. You will very rapidly exceed the limits of this lens' capabilities if your'e using a camera like the A7Rii. This lens just can't keep up with the sensor's capabilities. The whole point of a prime lens is image quality, and this lens will never deliver on that promise, even in the sweet spot of f5.6-f8. The barrel distortion was really disturbing. The first time I took a picture with straight lines in the frame, I knew this lens wouldn't work for me. It's so bad that correcting for the distortion changes this lens to more like a 31mm focal length. Not good, unless you want lomo-like picture effects straight out of your $3300 camera. Corner performance was pretty poor, which I expected at this price point. However, stepping even slightly away from the center of image, you see a dramatic reduction in image quality. Add to that this lens' propensity towards chromatic aberration, and this lens feels totally unsuitable for landscape photography.
This is a small, lightweight and generally good lens, a great fit for the smaller A7C series, and very suitable for casual and street photography. Not the sharpest lens around at wide open, but certainly sufficient, and it sharpens well when stopped down. I have a 24mm f1.4 G-Master which is significantly better, but also much heavier, larger and more expensive. For street shooting, this 28mm is excellent.
