Once on and playing your favourite music, video or whatever, switching them to noise cancelling makes the rest of the world disappear and you are immersed in glorious sound. Be that 360 degree surround or normal. The touch sensitive controls of swiping the headphone (or cupping the headphone to cancel the NC) are intuitive and just on the right side of sensitive. Nothing new from a Sony Product. Brilliant and expected so far...Then you hit the ULT button, boom, the bass jumps out of the song, your head screams "Yes" and your sound is transported even further. Hit the ULT button again and your brain cells enjoy a massage of sound waves. You will be amazed how Sony have put that sound into a headphone set, as it should come from a much larger speaker. Overall an amazing piece of equipment, robust, intuitive and incredible sound. Another Sony triumph.

Sony has delivered on their promise more boom with less distracting background noise. A classic Sony package with excellent performance and good value for money. The unit is stylish if a little bulky when compared with the WH-1000XM5, but does it really matter when they are out of sight on your head and so comfortable too that you forget they are there. Set up was no problem both to my Sony PC and Android smartphone. Cables are provided for charging and optional direct connection to your favourite device. Like most companies now a charger is not supplied as we all have far too many USB-C chargers sitting waiting for a cable! I must be honest; I think my bass tolerance has now increased. Another feature I appreciated is the NC/AMB control as circumstance in your day can require one or the other as a priority. This product is full of very practical features to enhance your pleasure, too many to go through here. Check out the Sony product information to see how many there are. I was not able to connect to a Smart TV or receive a phone call whilst using the ULT. Too be honest, I have no doubt at all that Sony have got that right too.I would suggest when you are looking to select a pair of headphones item judge this product on its performance and price as it has to be on everyone’s top five list especially if you are looking for that little extra bass performance.

You can also navigate between two different connected devices through the app and seamlessly switch between them. The swipe function on the right headphone works seamlessly and without much effort, it was very easy to increase/decrease the volume by swiping up or down and play next/previous by swiping front or back. Making and receiving calls, adjusting the volume, skipping songs etc. can all be done by hands free voice control and works great with iPhones’ Siri assistant. Calls are clear and the headphones do a good job blocking out any unnecessary sounds.-PerformanceOne great feature which is becoming standard is being able to connect to two devices at a time allowing audio from your phone and TV for example, which is great as I’m a PS5 gamer. One feature I loved is being able to cover the right headphone with your palm which immediately lowers the sound and filters in ambient sound, very useful in public settings if wanting to listen to an announcement or to someone trying to say something, remove your palm and the sound is back up. Batteries have come a long way in recent years and with up to 30 hours of battery life you’ll get hours and hours of play on these without constantly worrying about recharging.-Build qualityMy ears tend to get sore after a couple of hours with over-ear headphones but I was able to wear these for hours at a time, the ear padding is soft and very comfortable and doesn’t wrinkle. One issue to note that I’ve had with previous Sony headphones is the leather coming apart either on the ear pieces or the head rest, time will tell if this has been addressed. They do however feel sturdy and well built and I can see them lasting a long time.-Sound qualityThe sound is where these headphones excel as you would hope, they are LOUD, clear, crisp and have a rich and deep bass. The noise cancelling is the best I’ve experienced on Sony headphones, even when playing loud music it doesn’t disturb people around me and it blocks out sound really well. The 360 reality audio is incredible and makes you feel like you’re in a concert hall as you move around, you can even submit photos of your ears for ‘ear shape analysis’ so the sound is custom delivered to the shape of your ears! There is a ULT switch on the device which sends a sound with each press but to be honest it was difficult to tell which mode it’s on or to differentiate between each setting as there was no obvious or significant difference with each press.-ValueLoaded with many amazing and useful features for the price range that are customisable and adaptable to different lifestyles. Used on their own or paired with the app these headphones are made for simplicity and eliminating additional steps to be able to enjoy a comfortable listening experience for hours.

These new ULT Wear headphones came in the older type colourful box instead of the recycled brown type cardboard box of more recent Sony products. On opening the box you are greeted by a very nice quality, fabric covered, rigid type case containing the headphones which are in a folded position. So these will be pretty easy to carry with you in a bag or hand luggage on a plane. By scanning the QR code on the box lid, sends you to the Sony Headphones Connect app. (I already had this on my iPhone). This whole process took about 15 minutes. My headphones are black, but they also come in White or a Grey/Green colour. These ULT headphones are a bit more plasticky than the higher end Sony WH-1000XM5’s which I have previously tried. Although the actual design is very very similar. The ULT’s still come with the same noise cancelling tech, V1 chip to ensure seamless connection to your gadgets and BT5.2 and contain 40mm drivers in each ear cup. The headphones are very well made and weigh about 260g on my scales. In their fabric case, (which includes a pocket for the short (22cm) USB-A to USB-C charge cable and a 125cm long 3.5mm analogue wired connector, suitable for plane travel etc,) the whole package weighs around 450g.The Left hand ear cup, has all the buttons and connection sockets. The foil covered ULT (BASS! 2 stage) button, which gives it a rainbow coloured look, the Noise Cancellation on/off button, the main On/Off & combined Bluetooth pairing button, and the USB-C charging socket. Please be aware that this socket is only for charging and does not provide USB-C audio. (via a dongle/connector). Which is a bit of a shame. The last socket is for the wired 3.5mm adaptor cable.Pairing these to my iPhone took just seconds after turning them on. Press and hold the On/Off button for 2-3 seconds to do so. There is a small blue flashing light which confirms pairing. These can connect to 2 devices at the same time, so no having to keep connecting from one device to the other manually. The headphones do this automatically. Sony call it “Multipoint Connection”.The headphones cups are thick and covered in pseudo leather. Very soft and comfortable as they sit on the side of your head over your ears. The headphones feel light on your head and the head strap is soft and comfortable also without pressure on the top of my head. The Sound: BASS!!! These headphones are VERY bass heavy. Bass tends to dominate every track even if there was not much bass to begin with! By pressing the ULT button, you can then increase the bass even more in 2 more stages. If you love head shaking bass then these are the headphones for you. It is worth knowing however that you can alter the sound of these headphones via the Connect app via pre-sets or just customise your own sound equaliser. This was the very first thing I did, using the “Treble Boost” pre-set equaliser! This made the sound more agreeable to me. You can also alter the Clear Bass boost settings for the ULT button. So if you don’t like the heavy bass it can be adjusted to your liking. The Noise Cancellation uses the same tech chip as the 1000X series headphones, and has microphones on each ear cup to help. Overall it is very very good, so you really feel like you are in your own cocoon. They are also good at suppressing wind noise when out and about! Pressing the “NC/AMB” button switches between noise cancellation and transparency mode. This is also excellent. Call quality when taking a telephone call was also reported to sound very good when speaking with my wife! The Right hand ear cup, is used for touch controls and again work very very well and intuitively. Swipe up to turn the volume up, and down for turning it down. Double tap to pause/play, swipe forward to skip track ahead, and back to skip back. And my favourite: Cup your hand over the right had ear cup, to activate Transparency mode, so you can hear everything around you. It is as if the headphones disappear from your head!Battery life: A pretty incredible 30 hours with Noise Cancelling on, and a staggering 50 hours with N/C off. Just a 3 minute charge can provide 1.5 hours of playback. Battery technology is certainly incredible nowadays. These figures look fair and honest from my testing so far.Compatible with LDAC & AAC.CONCLUSION: An excellent pair of BT headphones which are very reasonably priced indeed as they contain so much of the tech found in the higher priced headphones. For me though, they are bit too bass heavy for my liking, even after tweaking the sound via the excellent Sony Connect app. My ears also get a bit too warm/hot after a while of wearing these but I think that applies to all similar designs of headphones in my experience.
If you're looking for a bass heavier version of the WH-1000XM4/XM5 and at a cheaper price, like the WH-CH720N, then this is a great option. The benefit of these headphones, over the WH-CH720N is that it has better ambient sound, more bass and it has the benefit of having touch controls on the right ear pad, like the XM4's and XM5's, which is a nice touch. You can also hold your hand over the right ear cup to let sound in and it fades out the music, so you can have a conversation with someone. These headphones have a ULT button on the left ear pad, that goes from off (no added base) to ULT 1 (added bass) and then ULT 2 (even more bass). I find ULT 1 to be the best option for my ears. If you want to use the maximum amount of bass, make sure that in the Sony Headphones app that you boost the bass in the equaliser settings at +10 first, because otherwise, you won't be using these headphones to their full potential. Unfortunately, you can't use the ULT button to boost the base or the EQ settings when using a wired connection, which is a shame. While you can use them wired while they're off, they won't sound nearly as good compared to when they're on, so I highly recommend keeping them on when you're using a wired connection. The same goes with the WH-CH720N.Also, for the EQ settings, I think having 0, +5 , +10, +10 and +10 on the five frequency settings brings out the most clarity with these headphones, as they do sound a bit muddy and not very clear when using their default settings. I use these settings for the 720N as well, as it really makes the sound a lot clearer and vibrant.Overall, I highly recommend these headphones for bass lovers. I think they pack quite a punch.9/10.
Have been using these headphones for about 3 weeks now and can honestly say that I'm been blown away by the performance. I my case it allows me to use for Teams calls on my lap whilst listening to music on the phone. The Sony Headphones app. offers a plethora of settings including goodies such as auto power off when headphones are removed and setting up a voice assistant. The app also offers various pre-set equaliser settings as well as allowing you to custom the sound to your ears. The headphones can also be controlled by touch and this can also be set up in the app. Sadly, no NFC.The sound is great. Nice, deep bass tones, further enhanced by pressing the ULT button, which takes you to a whole new place of audio goodness. The noise cancelling also blew me aware. I use these headphones on the daily commute and can barely hear the Tube!
Design & Build QualityThankfully, Sony hasn’t tried to reinvent the wheel unnecessarily here. They’ve taken the design aesthetic of the flagship XM5 and applied it here, with some changes to account for the bass-heavy drivers, to give the best listening experience for lower tones. The build quality is fantastic (as usual) and fortunately they’ve come right when my XM2’s band snapped. I’ve no doubt these will last just as long, if not longer, with robust build quality such as this. It has a simple to use button layout, which are easy to depress, even sporting a dedicated ‘ULT’ button to switch between bass boost modes. It also has a USB C charging port, which means finding a charger should be easy!Sound QualityWell, these certainly don’t lie: they promise a bass rich experience and they deliver! Whilst there’s no official word from Sony on what the ‘ULT’ branding is supposed to mean, I’d wager a guess it stands for ‘Ultra Low Tones’ because these headphones certainly deliver on this promise.Bass from a variety of genres is punchy, deep and crisp. Full volume is too much to stand, especially with the active noise cancellation (ANC) active; at least it is for me and, honestly unless you’re trying to go deaf, it should be for you too. But there’s an (presumably) unintended side effect of that, you don’t have to put the volume as high to get that feeling, meaning the drivers are drawing less power extending your battery life.I have a rare neurological condition, vibrations cause physical pain to me (including sound), but I’ve never had a pair of headphones which illicit the pain response - even at full volume… until now. If you put these on full volume with ULT on either ‘Deep Bass’ or ‘Attack Bass’ (1 or 2 clicks of the ULT button respectively) It literally triggers my nerve pain, so you know it is loud, clear and deep. That having been said, I am a big proponent of as rich a listening experience across genres as possible. Whilst these clearly favour bass, the highs are clear and warm, but lose a little bit of their expression; mids are a little muddied especially when listening to a track with a moderate amount of bass and a mid solo. I’ve listened to a wide range of genres, artists and performances with these to test their soundstage, clarity and general sound quality. So I want to point out to get such a good all-round listening experience and separation experience for a product designed to be bass heavy is really quite remarkable. For example when listening to Maria Callas singing Sempre Libera from La Traviata you can hear the expression of her upper notes with similar clarity to the XM2. But then when listening to Hip-Hop, such as Flo Rida’s Whistle (which includes higher notes in the ‘whistling motif’) because the bass is favoured it is less expressive, but still delivered with excellent clarity.All-in-all, the sound quality is very good, close to excellent, but due to the slightly muddied mids, more compressed soundstage and loss of expression on highs when playing content outside its target genres, falls just shy of excellent for me.Please bear in mind, that your mileage may vary, if you predominantly listen to bass heavy music, these are 100% the headphones for you, you will never be disappointed by their ability to pump out great dance/techno/rave beats. A particular favourite of mine for this ballpark style is MEZIAH & Lee Butler: Tonight Belongs To U!ConclusionAs somebody with very eclectic music taste, I can tell you I will thoroughly enjoy listening to classical, rock, opera, country, trance and every other genre with these headphones. Are they perfect? No, but they’re really very good!Battery life is very good. I took them out of the box and was able to listen to the playlist below completely and still have 7% of battery left. To be clear, they came charged in the box to 53%. They do come with a cable to connect via 3.5mm jack, should you need this and come with a soft-shell case.Testing InfoI used downloaded lossless tracks from Apple Music, to ensure as best a listening experience as possible. The playlist consisted of 123 songs across 22 different genres for total playtime of 7 hours and 32 minutes. It’s unclear if using the ULT Wear paired with a Sony mobile using a Reality 360 partner such as Amazon Music using their proprietary HSEE format would improve the few niggle points I have regarding sound quality, as I don’t have a Sony mobile with which to test.I did, however, sign-up for the Amazon 4 month free trial to experience Reality 360 and it’s really quite impressive. Though that was streaming only and not my primary music service.
Sony has really done it out of the park with these headphones. They actually listened to feedback from listeners and consumers, wanting more base and that’s exactly what you get. Along with the contractable design of the headphones, you wil be provided with the normal accessories and this time a case. Knowing that you are paying for headphones in the mid market range and having a case to go along with it, is a big plus. The headphones have touch controls on the right side, which I initially was surprised about when I found them. Therefore, the left side has your ULT button for 2 different types of base, which is handy and quick then controlling it from your app. However, I would like the distinctive noise between the 2 modes more clearer. So, for example you could have a setting in the app which changes it to someone saying “1” or “2”. These are headphones marketed for those who want the extra base but, don’t necessarily have the budget for the high end ones over £250. The only difference between those and these, is that they don’t include Sony’s Hi-Res feature and instead make up through it by software called DSEE. Overall, as I said that last point isn’t that big of a factor for the average consumer. As these headphones also include noise cancellation.
ULT Wear are over the ear wireless noise cancelling headphones. They come in a very neat case along with an USB cable for charging and a cable for connecting to a music player source. The normal mode of connection is via Bluetooth when all the facilities of the headphone are available. The headphones are extremely comfortable to wear and are adjustable to the size and shape of the head. Additional connections enable the headphones to be charged ( 30 hours playing time are quoted for noise cancelling operation and 50 hours without noise cancelling) and there is the socket for the headphones cable.Using Bluetooth all the various functions such as play/pause, volume up /down and forward/backward track are available by finger control on the right headphone. These work very well with devices that have these features inbuilt. Voice assist is also available but I was unable to test these features. A very comprehensive Help Guide is available on the web (helpguide.sony.net) which explain in detail how to use Voice Assist and methods of connecting to different computer operating systems. In testing headphones one has to use various sound sources and different genres of music. I have used a hifi system, iPhone and an Astell & Kern portable music player. In all three cases the ULT Wear headphones sounded extremely good. In the case of the music player all the finger processes on the right headphone worked admirably. My only concern with the ULT Wear headphone is with the ULT switch itself. The switch has 3 states: ULT1, ULT2, Off. I listen to classical music and despite trying a range of types eg symphony orchestras, solo artists etc I found it impossible to differentiate between the three ULT switch setting. Each time the switch is pressed an audible sound is emitted but there is no physical indication which of the switch settings has been set. There is a Headphone app on the iPhone which does give an indication but if you use any other music source that facility is not available.Disregarding that particular fault I found the ULT Wear headphones a joy to use and would recommend them to anyone who want comfortably headphones which work extremely well with a portable music player.
Having received the ULT Wear headphones, I found them extremely easy to configure. The "headphones" app (downloaded from the App store onto my Iphone XS) was easy to use, as well as providing access to setup of controls and graphic equalizer provided access to easily understandable tutorials which helped immensely in the learning process. The App also acts as as an interface between the headphones and up to two audio devices at any one time, which allows me to listen to podcasts and/or radio stations on my phone, but quickly switch to listen to music stored on my Sony Sony NW-A40 Series Walkman.Setup commences with "ear shape analysis" which purports to set up the phones to your ear shape - the ear cups totally surround the ear which is a very comfortable ... The microphones located on each earpiece (which also provide the sampling of ambient sound for noise cancelling) pick up my voice very clearly without the need for a microphone boom typical of a PC headset. In all the ULT Wear is one of the best headsets I've experienced in recent years, much more flexible than most competitors (in my opinion) and far more comfortable than the normal "in-ear buds" supplied by phone/mp3 player manufacturers. If asked, I would certainly recommend these to anyone looking for a comfortable, enjoyable, quality listening experience.
