These elevated the back of the case maybe 1/2-1mm off any surface on which the case is laying which dramatically reduces scratching. Is it essential? No lint at all. In short, has all the things you'd want in a case of this style, range, price, and nothing you don't, plus some really nice utilitarian features. Money well spent.
