Easy to prepare before use. Disappointed with the quality of Stanley planes Poor milling and PLASTIC handles. Managed to swap them for wood from an old plane. Stanley used to be brand leaders, now they have been overtaken especially by Wood River. Excellent service by Toolden, Plane arrived in 2 days. Well done..

I've been using Stanley planes for decade and always find them a joy to work with once I've sharpened and set them up (fettled) the way I like.

A sad case of an old, established, company trading on their good name. I would expect to do some 'fettling' like flattening the back of the blade and putting a micro bevel onto the edge. However, I don't expect to have to recut the threads on the frog adjuster so it would turn. Nor would I expect to have to jam the frog side with a wedge so I could get it perpendicular to the plane axis before locking it in place. The blade edge wasn't square and the addition of three nicks on the edge was an unexpected bonus. This is about one sixth the price of certain other makes - and about one tenth the quality.

This plane's sides aren't square to its sole, so you can't use it for shooting. The sole is very coarsely and inaccurately lapped, and I wasted hours trying to make the plane's mouth actually touch the wood, to prevent tearout - so you're better off looking at something else for smoothing. You can camber the blade heavily and use it as a fore plane but I prefer the lighter wooden planes for that. So I feel like I wasted my money on this.
An excellent plane that does the job, good value for money. Another fine quality item from stanly. Just wish stanly would make the 5 1/2 size.
The plane arrived in good condition, no problems.As usual, Stanley planes can be used straight out of the box, but will perform better with putting more edge on the cutting blade and setting the plane up to your requirements.
Ive read the reviews and some people have really slated this plane, I've had mine 2 years and have used it on a number of occasions. I've not had any of the problems the other person mentioned and when sharpened properly the plane is a pleasure to use. I have lie Nielsen planes and a lie Nielsen its not, but I wouldn't want to use them for what I use this plane for. It fits perfectly where I want it too, highly recommended.2
Other than a coating of surface rust, this plane was in good shape. After several hours of rust removal it looked pretty good. The iron requires some work to get it flat and then sharpening the iron, I expect this plane to be a very good tool.
