I've been using the S50 edge-detect stud finder for several months now and I'm in love! I've had cheap stud finders and I've had fancy stud finders and this one bests them all! My home has plaster and lath, dry wall, and concrete walls and the S50 works on them all with amazing accuracy. I've never had any stud finder work all the time or even ever on plaster and lath walls but the S50 works every time? I bought this in December 2022. It does not detect studs correctly. It is not even consistent in its errors! You use it on one part of a wall a detects a few studs (mostly wrong). When you repeat the process on the same spot, it shows studs on other areas:)I ended up returning it after the first use. Mitre 10 staff happily refunded me with no dramas. I don’t recommend this because you will end up paying a transport fee for nothing.I bought a $70 one on a different brand and works very well.

I gotta say I was not expecting much from this stud finder when I got it. Most of the time when I use a stud finder it barely works and is usually 1/2" off from where the stud is but this particular stud finder was nothing like the ones I have used in the past. This thing is very accurate! It does very well at detecting the edges of the studs through 1/2" drywall. And with 5/8" drywall it does pretty good too, granted it does get off by like 3/16th of an inch. But with plaster dont even try it had a super hard time detecting the studs which I expected anyways. I have yet to see a stud finder actually work up against plaster. But other than that this stud finder is very good.

Mark the location where the red light comes on and goes off (the stud location). You should go back and forth several to times to confirm the readings. If the red light will not go out when you start, you may need to move a little sideways to ensure the stud finder is not on a stud. It is easy to blame the machine when it does not seem to be working, when in fact the problem may be operator error, like having a hand on the wall during testing. When reading reviews of more expensive stud finders you will find that they also do not work on all walls.
I got this stud finder a couple of weeks ago. It doesn't have much in the way of bells or whistles, literally. It is a simple stud finder that has a red LED that lights up when it is over a stud. I tested it on a new wall I recently put up. One side of the wall is painted and the other side, not yet. On the painted side, the stud finder worked well. It seems reasonably accurate. Oddly, on the plain drywall, it had some trouble finding the studs. It helped if I jiggled it a little while it was calibrating. But, considering that you generally shouldn't need a stud finder for unpainted walls, I don't find this a drawback. It does what it was meant to do and that is what counts. It's a decent value for the price.
Works as intended. Nice size that's easy to store. I recommend disconnecting the battery after use to avoid leak and corrosion of terminals when not being used for a prolonged time. I disconnected and turned the battery around so it will be ready to connect and use next time. The price was great to.
The Stanley Edge Detect stud finder is a great low tech, light weight, easy to operate stud finder tool. It operates on a 9v battery, can detect wood and metal studs and it's only about $11. Great for home improvement or hanging pictures. To operate you hold the left toggle in while sliding the hand held unit over the wall. there are two LED lights, one green, representing on, and a red one that will light if it detects a stud. Initially, for a second both LED lights will go on. I want to mention that this stud finder has difficulty detecting a stud in old homes that the walls were made with lath, expanded metal and troweled plaster. It's difficult to get a true reading because of the metal and lath. This is still an awesome product for a great price!
This is a very inexpensive device, so dont expect too much. However, it is handy for those who can work with its limitations. It does give a reasonable indication of where studs are, through standard thickness gib, and if extreme acuracy is not necessary it's fine. A useful addition to an 'occasional' DIYers tool bag.

Granted the walls I tested it on are 5/8” Sheetrock (5/8” + spackled joints may be too thick) which may cause penetration difficulty and/or confusion (my battery was tested beforehand and in good condition). Further testing revealed that this stud finder was being confused by spackling before and after the wall joint/stud location. To find a more accurate location of the stud when you get a 3 to 4” edge to edge reading, you must initialize the tool over the spackling (closer to the stud) before scanning. This stud finder will work better on thinner 3/8 or 1/2” walls, but for 5/8” walls I found that it will give you accurate locations only if you are willing to run several scans of the area and use a pencil and measuring tape to refine exact locations. If you are going to hang something heavy, it’s always best to use a 1/16” drill bit to locate the exact center of the stud by locating the sides and center between them.
Bought today and it’s rubbish - it was for a small job but is so inconsistent. There is a stud and then there isn’t a stud. In the remote chance it picks up a stud edge repeat checking and the stud width can alter by 3cm then just disappear. Absolute rubbish piece of equipment.
