Excellent design for a Gigabit Ethernet adapter. The USB cable and connectors are sufficiently thick and well constructed to make you feel that this hardware is going to last. It also comes with an additional USB-passthrough port on the adapter itself and ensuring that you still have a USB port to plug in your other devices, which is crucially important for new devices with only 1 USB port (i.e. the Microsoft Surface Pro 4). Powered internally by the AX88179 chip, which I believe is compatible with OSX.

This hub has been extremely useful for me to work on tablets without having to purchase a very expensive premium base. Attached USB and ethernet connections work in BIOS as well as Windows environments. Driver installation is automatic in Windows. The only downside is that power does not go upstream: the 3 attached USB devices are powered, but the device it is connect to (in my case a tablet), is not charged. Expected, but would be a nice feature.I've had very good overall experiences with StarTech products, and this is no exception.

I bought this by mistake, actually wanting another product instead. Decided to go ahead and find a use for it, and it worked so great, I use daily at home like a docking station for keyboard, mouse, and ethernet for my work laptop. Would definitely purchase again if needed.

I got an brand new laptop with specs. like i7, SSD drive, 16G RAM but with 100 MB Ethernet port. This saved my life, I plugged it into my only USB 3.0 port and it worked right away. The big plus is that I got a HD webcam and it didn't work in any USB hub, its had to be plugged in directly in the computer. Now I got the cam plugged in the StarTech.com USB 3.0 to Gigabit Network Adapter together with a 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive and they all are working flawlessly and I got my 1.0 Gbps speed. I Love it. Oh OS is Windows 10 64bits.
I'm using this on the Nintendo Switch through the USB port on the back. The only issue when using it on the Switch is that the download/upload speed is capped at between 10 to 20 mbps, but this is due to Nintendo not enabling the USB 3.0 feature on the back of the switch dock (it still runs at 2.0 speeds). When connected to a computer, it works perfectly at full speed. Nevertheless. this is a must-buy for Nintendo Switch users who need/want lower latency for online gameplay!

I bought this to connect to my Surface Book when travelling. It is a nice product that works as advertised, but I was quite disappointed to learn that is requires the use of an external power supply. That makes it very cumbersome to use in certain situations. I might as well be travelling with a full docking station. I looked carefully at the description, and there is no mention of the external power adapter.
With the limited number of USB ports on the surface pro(1), we needed a USB hub for console cord and ethernet adapters. With this, we dont have to have two additional dongles plugged in and the ethernet port works out of the box without the headache of looking for the driver. Also has the usual Startech quality.
I have tried this item and it seems to work ok. I haven't checked the transfer speeds yet so I can't comment on that. My only complaint is that the connecting cable is very short so I will have to buy an extension lead for it. Other than that it seems to be well made.
Works great on my 2013 11" MacBook Air, running Mavericks. This model is the first Air with USB3, so it can take full advantage of the adapter. I do see very good throughput, spiking at the maximum gigabit ethernet speed (close to 120Mb/Sec, copying from the Air SSD to a Mac Pro SSD). I do not see sustained 120Mb/sec, but rather spikes at 120Mb/sec and troughs at 70Mb/sec. All in all, it's almost as good as the Thunderbolt ethernet adapter, and it's good to have if you want to use the thunderbolt port for something else such as video out. Be sure to download the correct drivers. Search for AX88179 mac drivers and you'll find it.
