StarTech USB31000NDS USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter
A NIC or Network Interface Card is a circuit board or chip which allows the computer to communicate to other computers on a network. When connected to the network, computers can share websites, files, printers and other resources. The most popular networking standard at the moment is Ethernet, which one can recognize by the rectangular connectors with eight wires in them. Wireless network with the 802.11b and the faster 802.11g standard is also increasingly popular, both at home and in the office, though it is not yet as fast as wired (ethernet) network. A public place where you can use wireless internet is called a ""hot spot"".

So this is the adapter supplied by my help desk for a laptop it is not what I request as it is thicker then the laptop so actually lifts it up when plugged in. For the first few years it worked ok, have to plug it into the same usb port every time or setup the connection again but now I have to insert it just right and not wiggle or anything to get to function sometime it takes 2 or 3 times and different ports on the laptop to get it going. Very annoying since the only time I bother with it is when I NEED it such as configuring fresh out of the box equipment or network upgrades. Just sad that it has probably only been used 50 or so times and it isn't working

The perfect fit for a computer on which you've upgraded the OS and the on board Ethernet connection lost its driver. (Yes Dorthy, it happens). Plug this in, go on line, get a driver update program and fix the original problem. Or use with one of the newer notebooks that no longer comes with an Ethernet connection.

This adapter worked will in Microsoft Windows eg- 10. Worked on Kali Linux, however didn't work on my Raspberry pi 2 which ran Open-Wrt and Ubuntu Mate. Couldn't find the updated supporting drivers for raspberry pi. Also no drivers are provided with the device. Works on windows with Realtek rtl8153 drivers- downloadable. Fast shipping- Arrived before expected date.

I used this USB Gigabit Ethernet adapter (with an OTG adapter) to replace the out of box Ethernet adapter that comes with the Home Essentials Direct Fire TV Cube. Although its speed is limited by the USB 2 interface, it is still three times faster than the Home Essentials Direct branded Ethernet adapter that comes with the Home Essentials Direct Fire TV Cube.
Be careful when ordering this device; there are actually two offerings -- one with a dongle and one w/o. A dongle is a short USB cable that will extend from the computer's USB port to this adapter. You need a dongle if your computer has many USB connections and consequently there is not much room in the rear of the computer. On the other hand, if your computer has a free USB 3.0 port with plenty of room around it, you do not need a dongle. If the small extra cost of the dongle is not too important to you, buy it; better safe than sorry.
My motherboard Ethernet slot died. So I needed something that was USB to regain Internet capability. Only downside is that it is 3.0 so be advised you will need a 3.0 USB slot. It seems more stable and fast than my on-board Ethernet was. Should come with software to install. Though for me personally it was just plug and play on Windows 10. Worked without driver install.
Purchased because it is based on the ASIX AX88179 chipset, which is compatible with the Nintendo Switch. Works fine: Switch correctly negotiates wired Gb network when plugged-in now, and net-enabled games don't compete for WiFi
After finding the appropriate drivers on the internet for my Macbook Pro, this device works great. Connected via USB 3 gives reasonable Gigabit speeds. The device driver is also very good at recognising insert/removal of the device and connections come up quickly. My only real wish would be that the device were a bit physically smaller. If you are someone who regularly needs ethernet with your Mac to e.g. configure networking equipment etc., this device is a great choice.
The built-in Gigabit Ethernet interface on my motherboard failed and could not be repaired. I had to have Gigabit Ethernet to connect to the NAS I had just built; otherwise it was intolerably slow. I found the Startech USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet NIC Network Adapter at Walmart, ordered it, and it arrived in 3-4 days. Installation was a snap, except that I had to install the driver using Device Manager rather than follow the instructions that came with the adapter. I just found the only unrecognized device in Device Manager, right-clicked on it, selected install driver, and pointed it at the CD that came with the adapter. I also had to set the correct Ethernet parameters in Control Panel/ Network and Sharing Center, but that is expected and trivial. The automatic settings would have worked, except that I like a static IP address, rather than use DHCP. Windows 8 Automatic Updates just installed a new driver for the device, which seems to be working well.NAS transfers 30 to 300 Mbps over Ethernet for long periods, espeially during backups. Initially, I was concerned that USB could not handle all that traffic, since I already have a keyboard, mouse, scanner, two GPS devices, and two external hard disks attached via USB. But there has not been any problems with the USB or with any of the devices attached with it in about a week of use. Knock on wood.
you have to update the software from the Startech website, but it is THE MOST RELIABLE solution for the lack of Ethernet portal on the Macbook 2013-present. It resists the always pervasive tendency to make you go wireless. Yes, thank you sooooo much for this reliable ethernet device and software, changing a USB 3.0 into essentially an ethernet port (not merely a dongle that lets you think an ethernet will plug in --the dongles are terrible, the Startech is WONDERFUL!
