As others have said, this powered version of Startech's USB hub is great for external USB drives. I use this to power up the external drive for my kids Xbox and we've never had a glitch. Before using this, the hard drive acted a little flaky at times...now I think it was a power issue given all else was the same. For the size, it seems a bit pricey, but if it addresses your needs then maybe its a justified price point for happiness or satisfaction. Cheers! RC

I bought this a month ago, and just got around to installing it this evening. Imagine my disappointment as it absolutely doesn't do a single thing it was advertised to do. checked all the cables, swapped peripherals around to each PC and everything works fine. But absolutely nothing works when connected to this hub. I am very disappointed, to say the least.

I've probably spent way too much time trying to find a good reliable USB 3.0 hub for use with external drives and flash drives. This 4 port hub seems to be one of the best choices for that use case right now. I've tested it with USB 3.0 storage devices on both Linux & WIndows and it works, giving actual USB 3.0 speeds. It does come with an external 2A power supply, so it can power typical external 2.5" external storage devices and I suppose it can be used for charging too, but this hub's design seems optimized more for high speed data. I didn't notice the hub getting too warm when testing external drive speed tests.

The 4 Port Black SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hub works well; however, when the computer is shut down, the hub stays on, and other devices attached to it do not shut down. Because of this these attached devices' hard drives continue to spin, thus wearing them out. I have another hub that although it is plugged in to an AC receptacle, it shuts down allowing anything attached to it to shut down as well.
This is a nice little hub that does indeed connect in USB 3.0 mode and supports USB 3.0 speeds on all ports. The more well known brand USB 3.0 hub I currently use that this hub is replacing only works in USB 3.0 on one or two of the four ports (it may be defective). However the StarTech engineers were obviously not thinking when they designed this one or else they got pressured into skimping on the power adapter to cut costs. The USB 3.0 standard specifies that each port is to supply 900 ma of supply current simultaneously as opposed to the USB 2.0 standard of 500 ma per port. But the power adapter provided with this hub is only a 2 amp adapter. Given the problems I had with my previous hub, the first thing I wanted to check when I took it out of the box was to see if it could support USB 3.0 on all ports simultaneously. So after connecting the hub and starting up the laptop it is to be used with, I connected four USB 3.0 portable hard drives in quick succession. All four showed they connect in USB 3.0 mode. As soon as I connected the third drive, the second drive unmounted with the usual "improper eject" warning. Then later it remounted on its own. This was the result of the power adapter not being able to provide sufficient current for all four drives going through their highest current activity (motor spin up from stop) all at one time. A quick speed test with all four connected seemed noticeably slower than USB 3.0 to me (68 GB was going to take 31 minutes to copy so I aborted it). With more typical use, this would be no problem except for devices which draw higher than typical current (motor activity: scanners with frequent motor reversals, disk drives during start, cameras with lens zooming, etc). Still the ports should be able to provide the full current specified by the USB 3.0 standard at all times. The hub itself does support full USB 3.0 speed with only one device connected and even seemed about 25% faster than the drive plugged directly into the laptop (9 GB test file copied in 1.5 to 2 minutes). What I am looking for right now is a substitute power adapter to use with this hub. The power adapter from my previous hub is indeed a 4 amp adapter that provides enough current to provide 900 ma per port so I may end up using the old power adapter with the StarTech hub, but it would have been so much easier if StarTech had provided a 4 amp adapter to begin with. Not quite plug and play. I think this hub is going to be worth it though. It is the best USB 3.0 hub I have seen so far.
Purchased this StarTech 4-pot USB hub a few weeks ago to replace a several years old DLINK hub that stopped working. I use the hub to connect multiple external hard drives (mainly Western Digital brand), a mouse and an audio interface device to a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop which has a limited number of USB ports. Order delivery time was quite good - one or two days. Opened the package, plugged in the included power adapter, attached the hub to the laptop with the included USB cable and plugged in the peripherals to the hub and everything connected and was available automatically. So far the StarTech SuperSpeed USB 3.0 hub is working flawlessly and I'm very happy with the device.
The versatility of this portable power hub is what makes it a must-have item in your tech toolkit. The StarTech charges phones and tablets for multiple users during long road trips. If your older model car only has a 12V plug, get a dual charger byTylt , and expand to five charging hubs (see pic 1). Our three kids can plug into any one of the four ports on the StarTech, while front-seat passengers use the 12V car charger port. In newer car models equipped with a USB port, simply plug in for standard 4-port access. That same idea can work with a power bank when recharging from a home base. Relay the StarTech from the Kodiak to your gear eliminating having to plug into as many different outlets as you have power cords (see pic 2). Of course, you can always port off your computer USB, too. The StarTech portable USB hub lets you power up from anywhere at anytime no matter where you are. A terrific pocket-sized tool for your computing power needs.
This USB hub works as advertised. You will expand your USB connectivity and your circle of admirers when you hook this hub up to your Windows 10 computer and start plugging in Webcams, USB drives, and whatever else USB things you can get. I had to rate the Camera Quality as a 1 since it can't take pictures. I would have thought Home Essentials Direct would have known that, but I know that Home Essentials Direct has a lot on its mind these days, with the divorce and Lauren Sanchez and helicopters, and maybe Home Essentials Direct got it confused with a Canon 60D digital camera which can also connect via USB cable.
Worked great for a bit. I used it to connect my synthesizers but had to return one because it stopped working as a hub. and the replacement I got is doing the same thing. It still works as a usb charger and all but it no longer acts as a hub for merging data. a pretty expensive disappointment,
the startech 3.0 gen 1 4 port usb has been working consistently well. flash drives from usb 2.0, usb 3.0 gen 1 and usb 3.1 gen 1 extreme have all worked well with the port replicator and as intended. system backup times, using usb 3.1 extreme have gone from 1 1/2 hours (usb 2.0) down to 20 minutes. formatting of external drives have also worked well with reduced time to full format.
