Stihl MS 462 C-M Professional M-Tronic Petrol 50cm/20" Chainsaw with Rollomatic ES Light Bar (1142-200-0114)

I've had my 462 for about a year and a half now. I run a 25" stihl lite bar. Originally, I started with a full house chain. I experienced some frustration with bogging down in deep cuts in the beginning. I switched over to a full skip chain. I use it for felling and bucking. I think finding the right setup for your application bar and chain wise is crucial. After switching the type of chain I no longer bog down. It's definitely a hungry saw! I will also honestly say the more I run this saw the stronger it feels. It is definitely a saw for any serious user. I used to run an 029 and switched to the 462 because they have the same power head weight but the bhp is roughly double. A ripper for the weight

I've only ran this saw for 20 or so tanks, but this saw still continues to impress me more and more every time I run it. The saw is insanely light for a 70cc saw, probably the lightest 70cc I've ever ran. That sure doesn't mean it's gutless though, since this saw has a boatload of power and torque for it's displacement. I run a 32" full comp setup with this saw, and it pulls it no problem, even when the saw is buried in hardwoods. For small milling, this is the perfect saw for that too, since this is an adjustable carb and I can tune the saw richer for milling. Excellent power, and so easy to start.

I bought this saw at Wagner Building Supply in Wagner South Dakota. I have a 12you MS441 that developed a problem, and took it there to be worked on. I bought the MS462 to use while they worked on the MS441. I love the saw, it has a lot of power, and revs up really quickly compared to a conventional carb saw. I also was impressed with their service guys. They updated me several times on what they found on my other saw, and gave me detailed info on the parts, costs, and timeline to fix my saw.

Great power to weight ratio.

This was the saw I wanted because it is half a pound lighter and has a horsepower rating of 6.0. I preferred the standard carburetor model because it's what I'm used to. The chain acceleration of the saw is extremely fast. This a professional saw and maybe a bit much handle for a new saw operator. I have heard that the piston design is heavier on one side than the other witch may or may not cause engine problems, only time will tell, I have had NO problems and the saw runs strong.

It didn't hold up.

It was great until it wasn't. I had the saw for 18 months and cut just over 6 cords of wood with it. It would pull a buried full comp 28 at 10,000 feet elevation. I used only Motomix for its entire life. One day it lost compression. I took it to the dealer where I bought it. The mechanic told me that there is no scoring in the cylinder indicating straight gas, or grit through the air intake. The decompression valve is good. He did not know why it lost compression and surmised a defect that made it out of warranty. Stihl declined to help me with it, as it was out of warranty. The repair cost is over half of the purchase price of the saw. Not a good value proposition at all in my case. Thankfully, my MS261CM is running strong.

Lightweight for the power

I bough the this saw about 9 months ago for my tree service business. I have run a 20”, 28”, and 30” bar on it. The 20” screams and its my go to for bucking. The 28” light bar with a full skip chain was a winning combination. I have a 30” now that I use for low-volume felling of larger trees and it’s just okay. Where I bought the 30” bar they were out of full skip chain and the saw doesn’t quite have the power to pull that many cutter teeth across that much bar. Next time I will get a full skip if I still have a bar that size.My only complaint about the saw is that it doesn’t run in extremely hot weather. When we had days of temps over 100 last summer it would run for 5 minutes then quit due to gas overheating and not venting in the fuel tank. You’d open the fuel tank and it would spray all over you, liquid would be bubbling inside, then you could close the cap and it would run 30 seconds before quitting again. This is both dangerous and a productivity killer. I don’t know if there’s a fix for this, but I’d sure like to hear about it if there is because otherwise this is a beast of a saw.

Never Again

Owned this saw for 2 weeks. After 30 minutes of cutting the saw died and would not restart. I took it back to the dealer. They called today to inform me that the oiler needle valve (which is made of plastic) went out and took out other parts of the saw. Stihl will not honor the warranty. Said I cut the entire time with the break on. Have you seen that? A saw that will limb a tree with the break on? When purchasing dealer said buy Stihl fuel and bar oil and get double the warranty. What warranty? Stihl does not honor a warranty. I own 3 Stihl chainsaws, stihl hedge trimmer, 2 Stihl string trimmers, and a Stihl blower. Never again! This is a Pro Saw that will not last 20 minutes under residential use.

This saw rips!

Before I get to the review, a couple clarifications that might be helpful to some people. This "R" version with the wrap bar also has the big double dogs and an over sized clutch cover for better chip clearance. These are not shown in the Stihl stock pictures above, but you can clearly see them in the review photos and there doesn't seem to be any mention of them in any literature. Even my dealer did not know about the clutch cover when I called to ask, so Stihl could do a little better here. I don't understand why the standard model of this saw does not come with these features. The big double dogs are so much nicer to use and the big clutch cover definitely makes a difference when cutting softer woods that make big chips. The power to weight is excellent and the thing revs so fast. It revs quick with a 28" bar, and with a 25" it's like lightning. I use both of these bars with either full comp or full skip chains depending on the day and use. Cutting pine with a 25" full comp chain on this saw is probably one of the most gratifying things you can do.I will add one thing that I think hasn't been said enough. Most of the reviews and comparisons out there focus on the 70cc "class." Cost aside, I think it makes more sense to compare this saw to most other manufacturer's 60cc saws, since it is very similar weight. Most 60cc saws, even the MS362, make very little sense now when you consider that you can have this saw, with SO much more power, and take basically zero weight penalty.

Wasted Money so far...

I purchased a new 462 c-m a couple of weeks ago. I opted not to have the saw tested by the shop when I purchased it, as I like to break my saws in carefully and am no stranger when it comes to chainsaws. Today, I took it to work and planned to break it in. To my surprise, the trigger is locked up. I cannot press it at all! After calling both my local dealer, and the Stihl support number, it was clear that I must drive the 2 hour round trip to my nearest dealer to drop the saw off for inspection. This saw is still wet behind the ears and I'm already having troubles. Considering I just spent multiple thousands of dollars on Stihl products this spring, I am rather concerned and upset. The dealer treats me very well and will hopefully have the product up and running ... MoreI purchased a new 462 c-m a couple of weeks ago. Wow what power!

I cut up downed trees for firewood in my area here in middle TN, and I have always used Stihl 18" chainsaws. But when I would get to the thicker trunk, I would wish I had a longer chain bar to make this go better. So after a good bit of research, I decided to order a Stihl MS462C unit with a 28" bar. Whoa! What a beast! It has a feature that assists with starting, when I pull the rope. It has a meaty growl that speaks of its power. It chews through those downed tree trunks like butter, then it's just up to me on how to transport those big slabs. Its a little tricky changing a chain, because the long bar tips it forward, unlike the 18" models. But it can be done easily once you get used to it.
