4 in q Air Fryer - not overly impressed

I bought this about a month ago (on sale) mainly to dehydrate chicken for my dogs (which is great) but have been somewhat disappointed overall in this appliance. I’ll admit it is probably more the user, but it is extremely disappointing that Sunbeam provided only 4 recipes in the guide that came with it and only have about 10 on their website (none of which actually interest me). The cooking guide provided is pretty much based on frozen foods or “breaded” meat. The guide is actually pretty useless if you just want to cook a simple meal. It almost feels, like they have no idea how to cook in it so didn’t provide the buyer with any useful information. As this oven is a 2000 watt oven can’t even “borrow” the Phillips Air Fryer recipes as they are a lower wattage. ... MoreI bought this about a month ago (on sale) mainly to dehydrate chicken for my dogs (which is great) but have been somewhat disappointed overall in this appliance. It’s also quite big so need some space to store.

This cooks extremely well and noist like other fryers. The rotating basket is a good item as you can just fill, set, forget. The fryer does all the work. However, when attaching the basket it is not always easy to place. When getting out also not an easy task. Bit fiddley to do this. Cleaning isn't easy. Some areas of the basket are hard to clean as they are too tiny. Overall, a big bulky, hard to clean, but good cooking item.

Early days but I have some thoughts
4 January 2022

So I have only used mine three times so far and have some thoughts. Wedges in the rotating basket - cooked well, but not as crispy as I would have liked, probably just needed more time. The basket is quite fiddly to get in, but some practice makes it easier. Homemade burger patties (twice) - I brushed with oil, too much, only a very light covering is needed. The top shelf cooks a lot faster, make sure you rotate the shelves during cooking. The unit itself is easy to operate but there is one oversight IMO. The light button is right next to the power button. The light only stays on for a few minutes at a time. There is no lock to stop you turning off the machine during use. I accidentally pressed the off button instead of the light button and it just turns off. ... MoreSo I have only used mine three times so far and have some thoughts. Sunbeam should make it so that when the cooking is in progress, the off button is disabled. If it really needed to be turned off, you can just unplug it. I had been waiting a long time before buying an air fryer and this appealed because of the stainless steel cooking surfaces. It isn't perfect, but am happy with my purchase.

Fantastic Device

This Air Fryer and Oven is the best thing I've added to my kitchen. As a shift worker time for meal cooking needs to be efficient, and this unit is all that and more. I've never had much joy with cooking steak, but this device does a fantastic job doing just that. Just using the timer I can cook a steak to just how I prefer it. Vegetables are a breeze (pun intended) to cook and come out crisp and healthy, as does chicken and fish. A bit of practice needed to get the timing right, but that's on the operator not the device. Another thing I like very much is the ease of cleaning up the Air Fryer after cooking. Due to the design cleaning is easy and quick as all the parts come out and can be cleaned in the sink, then it's a quick job to clean the open cavity. I've yet to use the Rotisserie function, but that's this coming weekend with a chicken (and a wine). Then I try the rotating basket with some fries.

Finally found the Air Fryer that suits us the best
3 May 2021

Easy to use Air Fryer. Love that you can use 3 trays at a time. The chips came out amazing when using the rotating basket. My issues are only these: cleaning the basket was challenging, it would clean well in a dish washer, which we don't have. The other one is, when using all 3 trays, you need to swap the top and bottom around so the result is even. Otherwise, the top layer is too cooked. For the amount of food it can cook, this machine is quite compact. It doesn't heat the surrounding surfaces too much so I can leave it for a short time and not worry it will damage the bench or something. The door is removable which is super handy when cleaning. The trays are made with quality material and it's very easy to clean. Now to learn more cooking methods and recipe ideas!

Good air fryer, not an oven.
15 August 2022

While this is my first air fryer, I think it's a good one, and I am happy with the purchase. I would recommend it to others, but I'd temper my expectations, as the product's ability fall slightly short of its aspirations. Let's start with the biggest one - this can't act as an oven. There is only one heating element at the top, right under the big fan that forces convection. Even if you set it to "Bake" mode, it will operate exactly the same as in "Air Fry" mode, since the fan never turns off while the heating element is on. Even if it would, there is no heating element on the bottom, so you can't really bake anything. I bought it hoping I can bake small frozen pizzas in it, but that's nearly impossible since it just burns the cheese on top and leave the dough ... MoreWhile this is my first air fryer, I think it's a good one, and I am happy with the purchase. Even if you set it to "Bake" mode, it will operate exactly the same as in "Air Fry" mode, since the fan never turns off while the heating element is on. Even if it would, there is no heating element on the bottom, so you can't really bake anything. I bought it hoping I can bake small frozen pizzas in it, but that's nearly impossible since it just burns the cheese on top and leave the dough undercooked. While this is especially noticeable with pizzas, it's a general trend with this air fryer since all heat is delivered from the top, and in general things will cook more from that side, which sometimes may necessitate turning things over, but usually not. I tried the rotisserie function once, you have to use a very small chicken (I used a 1100 gram chicken, and it was at its limit). I followed the instruction in the manual and had a beautifully cooked chicken. The included rotating bingo cage for air frying chips/potato gems is pretty useless. Chips fry better if laid out neatly in one layer on one of the three included trays. And potato gems just get stuck to the sides and don't roll around like bingo balls should in such a cage (they also get stuck to the tray, but I guess that's just potato gems). I haven't found a good use for it yet, and it also creates quite a mess as all the movement and tumbling inside the cage causes shedding into the crumb tray and around it. The static nature of the trays means the only mess will be some oil drips from the food, and because it's non-stick, it's really easy to clean with a paper towel to the point where washing after every use isn't needed (it doesn't touch food you eat anyway). I just stick it in the dishwasher before I begin a cycle, regardless of use in the air fryer. The air fryer is great for crispy baked goods. It heats up small quiches wonderfully, makes for crunchy crumbed chicken tenders, bakes frozen pastries nicely, and even hard boils eggs to perfection (but you must turn over the eggs mid-way otherwise the top side will cook more). The controls are touch based. This makes it easy to clean the panel as it's one, smooth shiny surface, but makes a bit annoying to sometimes press the button as they won't always register. Last night I couldn't get the "minus temp" button to work as I needed low temps (130°C) for boiling eggs. It worked fine a minute alter, but capacitive buttons have their downsides. I'd much rather have individual tactile button that are a little harder to clean. The beeper is very loud. That's great when you're in another room and it needs your attention, but I'd it's a bit too loud when it beeps for every button press. I wish they used two volume levels. I'm really missing a tray handle accessory. Something to attach to a tray and pull it out. The tray grooves on the side of the machine aren't really rails, as soon as you pull out the tray two thirds of the way, it starts to tilt downwards and will eventually fall. So you need something to support it, but a kitchen towel or mitten will get dirty from the food since the tray is just a mesh. One of those detachable tray handles would be perfect for this oven, I wish it was included. It's pretty easy to clean. The drip tray catches all the nasties, the rest is easy to dust off or wipe away splashes. The door comes off for easy cleaning. The rest goes in the dishwasher. It also heats up quite quickly, so instead of waiting 12 minutes for my oven to reach the desire temperature, I wait about a minute for this air fryer. Overall, a good air fryer, but it's not the all-in-one it claims to be. Buy it for all the delicious air frying you can do with it, but keep in mind it won't replace your regular or toaster oven.

I understand the Hype now!
27 October 2021

So after hearing the hype after several years about air fryers, I definitely understand why now. Hand-cut fries done in this vs. in a normal oven are worlds apart & are ready nice and quickly. Frozen fries comes out wonderfully crisp, thanks to the rotating basket & I always find myself going and checking on them by pressing the light button, which I think is a great feature for impatient people like myself! The dehydrator has been an interesting one, as I've had to experiment with timings and temperatures for citrus, which seem to take much longer than other fruits - at least for cocktail garnish purposes. All round, a great product with several more functions for me to explore.

New favourite cooking appliance!

First airfryer I’ve had, and I love it! It’s an excellent product, and very user friendly. It’s great having the range of cooking options on the interface - can just choose one and it automatically sets the temperature and time. It also doesn’t take long to preheat, which is great. I’ve been using it to cook just about everything, as it’s much more reliable than using my normal (very old) oven. I used the ‘dehydrator’ setting on a range of fruit (including, strawberries, mango and pineapple). This was a great snack to make during lockdown while working from home, as I could just chop up some fruit, and put it in the machine for 4+ hours (depending on the fruit). So much better than any other air fryers I've used before. Beautiful design, simple and intuitive. Glass door allows you to see inside so you don't need to open it every now and then. The light turns off automatically, which is a great addition. Perfect size, comes with trays and a basket that rotates depending on the setting chosen. Frozen chips are cooked to perfection in the rotating basket, which prevents them from cooking unevenly. No more burnt corners! The manual was very well written and explains how and when to use the shelves and basket, depending on what you are making. It can be a little tricky to use the fork to get the basket in and out its slot, but after a bit of training I can say I've mastered it. All in all, I'm very happy with the product and highly recommend it.
