When it came time to look at upgrading our old NAS, we looked at a number of options / brands that would fulfill our needs. After exhaustive research we noticed that there were few options when it came to a true balance of power/flexibility and price. Picked one of these up in early 2020 to be my main workhorse for photography with SSD's but I've since moved those SSD's into a larger RS3618xs so I could expand that array further. Now I have this loaded with four 16tb Exos drives and two Samsung Evo Plus 500gb drives for caching. I get 42TB of space in RAID 5 BTRFS config. Speeds are absolutely awesome either way you configure it and the caching isn't even necessary honestly. You'll need a low profile 10GbE card such as the Synology E10G18-T2. Found out these aren't compatible with Synology's own NVME drives for caching so just be sure to check the compatibility list for any add-ons. With this unit you get two hot-swappable power supplies for peace of mind.
The unit is excellent for rack mount with a good CPU but lacks RAM, only two GB of RAM, and it's none upgradeable.
Exactly as expected. I upgraded from the 918+ and the difference in CPU performance is stunning.It's little noisy, but that is expected from 1U box. In my particular case, temperatures are right on threshold of fan speeds, so it spinning up and down all the time. It would be annoying, if I had to live next to it.
LOVE, LOVE all of Synology products. Great design and function. This rackstation is much more than just a NAS. This device runs our Active Directory, MySQL and several internal web applications. Virtual Machine support is excellent as well. Definitely worth the investment.
