Almost as good as Fuji lenses

I wanted a lens for my Fuji X-T5 that would help me reduce the number of Fuji lenses I carry when I am walking around town taking photos. Specifically, I wanted to replace the kit lens (16-80mm) and 70-300mm lens. Unfortunately, the photos taken with this lens are not as good as the pictures I take with the Fuji lenses I own, so I ended up returning it. I am scoring 3 stars because it is still a good lens for the money if you cannot afford to purchase the Fuji lenses or simply want to save money. I highly recommend bringing your camera to the store and trying lenses before buying to ensure you get what you want. This company provided a great shopping experience. Thank you.

I shoot with a Sony A7Riv. This lens is not designed for full frame cameras but I got it anyway and was not disappointed. When I initially got the camera I was disappointed by the resolution. But I determined that the camera had superior resolution to my Tamron lens. Fortunately Tamron came out with this astonishingly sharp ultra zoom lens and when I uses the new lens, the 62 megapixel camera had met its match. I use this lens for about 95% of my photos. It is extremely sharp and has outstanding image stabilization (I have a mild benign tremor and with this lens I don't have to worry about motion artifact). I can't speak highly enough about its performance. I just wish that Tamron made a telextender for this lens so that I could use it for bird photography.

I am glad I did because I only like to carry around 1 lens. I do believe the Tamron lens has better quality than the Sony Lenses in that same price range ($300-700). This really is an 'all-in-one Lens. I really enjoy manual-focus photography and I do not mind this feature at all. The auto-focus is great on this camera too! Plus, I thought the images were great. This lens is what you use when convenience rules the day orit's more important to "get the shot" than to "get the shot perfect." Itsextreme range compensates for its primary deficiency, a lack of critical sharpness as compared to the more narrow-ranged XF zooms. If you are looking to pixel peep at 200% or crop your photos deeply this lens isn't for you, but the expansive range shouldgreatly reduce the need to crop. If you fill the frame with your composition the images look great. This works best as a "daylight lens." Well-lit photos show plenty of detail and autofocus is fast in most situations but performance on both measures drop as the light drops, faster than with pro-grade lenses. Well-lit photos show plenty of detail and autofocus is fast in most situations but performance on both measures drop as the light drops, faster than with pro-grade lenses. This is not the best choice for shooting indoor action or things like birds-in-flight. The VR is effective, as I am getting3+ stops of compensation at 300mm without too much effort, and I suspect more is possible with little concentration and at shorter focal lengths. This lens is not a lightweight. The robust grip of the X-S10 mitigates this but handling may be more awkward on the more classically styled Fuji bodies. None of this should be surprising. This is the price of being able to shoot a full-frame equivalent 27mm-450mm with semi-macro capability without changing lenses. This is a ton of lens for the money, and with its closefocusing capability is the closest thing I've seen to a true one lens solution, so long as you have plenty of light or stationary subjects that allow you to push down shutter speeds. 99% of what Ishoot with this will be viewed exclusively on social media where the image quality differences between the Tamron and more narrowly purposed lenses won't be as readily apparent. It wouldn't befair to compare this Tameron directly with shorter range premium lenses but among superzooms it is one of the best I have ever used.

Outside sports/activities are best, but I have gotten some really good shots in gyms, also. Those just usually need some editing in Lightroom. So if you’re looking for a great all around lens that works for a wide variety of things, I’d say this is it! Especially for the price point.

Great photo lens, disappointing video lens
27 February 2024

This lens is surprisingly compact and lightweight for the versatility and performance of the image. The stabilization is excellent and the zoom ring is surprisingly smooth. It seems to be great for outdoor photos in my experience, although I mainly video. Unfortunately, video performance seems to be a very weak point for the lens. Most lenses are not parfocal but do a good job of compensating. This lens does a very bad job maintaining focus at differing focal lengths. Even a minor change in focal length with autofocus enabled results in a completely out of focus image, and larger zooms require a full focus hunt from the camera. In addition, zooming out too quickly jams the focus motors and causes focusing to stutter between infinity and minimum until the lens is ... MoreThis lens is surprisingly compact and lightweight for the versatility and performance of the image. In addition, zooming out too quickly jams the focus motors and causes focusing to stutter between infinity and minimum until the lens is reattatched or the camera is restarted. Even so, the lens continues to stay quite soft for even static shots in video. All of these compromises are to be expected for a lens of this price with this range but it is all something to keep in mind.

Not for me

I ordered this lens with some guarded optimism hoping it might replace my 18-135mm as a single lens solution for travel. Unfortunately after trying two samples it was clear to me this lens simply would / could not be as good as the Fuji glass, because of the compromises made in such a super zoom.I bought it based on some good initial reviews, including some here stating it was sharper than the 18-135mm. Expectations were not very high, but figured a few missed photos and overall softer picts would be a fair trade off to carrying an additional lens on vacation. Many of us came to Fuji for their bodies and ergonomics but it really was the wonderful glass, be primes or zooms that made us stay. Expectations were not very high, but figured a few missed photos and overall softer picts would be a fair trade off to carrying an additional lens on vacation. Many of us came to Fuji for their bodies and ergonomics but it really was the wonderful glass, be primes or zooms that made us stay. To that end, the Tamron was a big disappointment in my book and I will not bother acquiring a 3rd sample. The sharpness was not even close to my 18-135mm at any point throughout the entire range, VC is not adequate on the long end under anything other than bright Sun, photos lack pop and are just blah, focus hunts and to me seems slower than any of my other Fuji glass, including the very slow 56mm prime.During a visit to a local botanical garden I asked my wife to use my XT2 my new and "wonderful" Tamron while I used her old Olympus m4/3 system. That subjective "test" did not last very long. She could not get any keepers under the tree canopy. Butterflies and birds, forget about it.To close this out, great effort by Tamron to bring this lens to market and no doubt it will be loved by many to put convenience over quality. I really, really wanted to at least like this lens enough to replace my 18-135mm which is the weakest Fuji lens I have. Not going to happen! The Tamron is not only significantly less sharp, but it also has other inherent issues that makes this a no-go for me. I bought this lens to allow me to take more photos with less gear, instead I got a lens that produced less keepers of lower quality and with more frustration and more bulk. Maybe in a few years a Rev 2 will come out and I will be tempted to give it a try. Until then, I can honestly say when you read the reviews, read between the lines. Everything I've experienced is detailed in many of them, just have to read between the lines since they are in the business of giving "participation awards" not trophies.

One of the best lenses I've ever had. My lens is a little bit on the softer side, especially when using a range of 450-500, even on f/8, but overall it is a great lens. Thanks to the shop and their support. I wanted to return it bc I thought I bought the wrong one, and they responded quickly. I left the lens for myself. And this was the right decision. It's super for bird shooting, some nature and flower pictures, and even landscapes. It is not as universal as 50-400, but can reach farther.

Ridiculous good lens
3 May 2024

I always buy my gear at B&H. But this time around a friend had bought this lens and wanted to sell it because it was too big for him. It is on the hefty side when paired onto a smaller APS-C camera like the Sony A6700 (which I am using). Coming from the full frame world however, and given it excellent reach, I figured why not give it a shot. Every time I snap this guy onto my camera I'm amazed at what it can help me do. Sharpness, contrast, and build quality are super. It gives me closeup capabilities, creates great bokeh, and the stabilizer allows me to shoot as low as 1/15 at full reach. Really can't go wrong as a super zoom.

The copy I received this time around, brand new from B&H, is perfect. It is significantly sharper throughout the entire zoom range and is resolving fine details in the way I would expect this lens to, matching what I have seen from other reviews and photographers. If you are on the fence about purchasing this lens - just do it. It is wonderful, freeing, and gratifying to be able to shoot all focal lengths from 18 - 300mm and not worry about missing a shot. With today's camera technology, IBIS, OIS, high ISO noise control, and AI noise reduction, you don't have to worry about getting the *perfect* shot. This lens is about getting that shot that you see in the moment and instantly moving on to the next.
