It's an APS-C lens so is only any good for crop factor cameras or M4/3 if you have one. That said it is Canon specific in mount so don't try using this with an adapter on anything else - you'll be very disappointed. Primarily aimed at pairing with the R5 I'm sure it is plenty sharp and plenty fast enough but as I run Sony and use predominantly vintage glass this was not the right match for me (I instead opted for the Sony 70-350mm APS-C specific to pair with my A6500 and have been very pleased - sharp, deep colour resolution, excellent contrast and of course the ubiquitous low light effectiveness of Sony's little maestro). Great for the backpack.Compatibility: Both the EOS R5 and the EOS RP cameras automatically sense that the Tamron lens is designed for a cropped APS-C sensor and changes the camera to a 1.6 crop factor mode, simplifying the lens mounting process. Less to worry about when changing lenses.Performance: The Tamron?s auto focus is pleasantly fast and generally precise. Like all AF lenses it can get confused in complex scenes. The control for manual focus is responsive, making the focusing process reasonably quick and intuitive.Negative points:Compatibility: One needs to purchase a Canon EF to RF adapter to use the Tamron lens on a Canon mirrorless camera.Performance: The Auto focus response, though fast, feels a bit slower than the native RF lenses.Performance: As with all cropped sensor cameras there is a 1.6 magnification factor in the focal length. This is good for long range shots, as the 400mm provides effectively a 640 mm zoom factor. But for wide angle applications, the 18mm effectively limits the shot to a 28.8mm field of view. Perhaps not as wide as one would like. For instance, when I am shooting the Milky Way, I prefer a 14-15 mm field of view. Can?t get that with a cropped sensor.Bottom line is that I am quite pleased with the Tamron 18-400mm f/3.5-6.3 Di II VC HLD Lens for Canon and recommend it. I would and did buy it again!

I used this lens with a solar filter to take shots of the 2023 Annular Ring of Fire Solar Eclipse in Gerlach, NV. I was able to take very high quality photos zoomed in enough to reasonably fill the frame. The lens was also useful for the landscape photography I did in southern Oregon. The depth of field made my shots at Crater Lake National Park very sharp despite the cloudy and dark skies.
To be fair, I was used to incredible sharp clear images from my 70-300 Nikon lens with Nikon d7100 camera. However, it started having trouble focusing after years of use. Forced to find a replacement I looked for something that gave me more range w/o being too heavy. I am still trying to get used to the lack of sharpness. It does take shots at great lengths but they look more like newspaper photo images. I wish my old lens still worked. When you take a shot, you always want it to be the absolutely best it can be.

Just donât expect it to be anything more than it actually is â itâs kind of a jack-of-all-trades in focal length, and there are sacrifices you have to accept because of that. It doesnât do any one thing really well. It has good image quality, good AF accuracy, good AF speed, good build quality, and good vibration compensation. But it has all of that, from 18mm to 400mm â thatâs why itâs a bargain. But itâs for the specific person who wants a single, âwalk-aroundâ lens, or someone who doesnât want to own a bunch of lenses. Itâs not for someone looking for a specific purpose lens with superior performance â it will disappoint you if you expect it to outperform.There are some things that I didnât like. First, the zoom â the ratio of twist-to-zoom isnât as aggressive as I would like; I feel that it could be more aggressive where less twist is required to move through the zoom range. I found myself having to zoom, reposition hand, zoom to get from center capture to intended zoom and shoot. As well, the effort to twist is both tight, and also inconsistent (there were âhitchesâ in the twist which kind of make it hard to stabilize when zooming quickly). Second, while Tamronâs vibration compensation (VC) is generally really good, I found that it wasnât very good on this lens past 200mm (maybe 1 stop of VC assist at that level; was decent below 200mm). Switching from mode 1 to mode 3 (capture-priority stabilization) seemed to help a bit, maybe giving me an additional stop of VC assist.Overall, I think you get a lot for the money with this lens and it probably will work for most people who are looking for a true âsingle lensâ solution, especially if they take the time to dial in the lens with the Tap-in console if needed (which everyone should do anyway since it just makes getting sharp images that much easier).

This lens would also be quite the treat whilst traveling because of the different levels. While I can say that this lens was quite remarkable, there are a few little things with the lens that are weird. I wish the focus ring had a display showing the closest level all the way to infinity, the focus ring takes part ima rather noticeable breathing, and sometimes, but hand gets caught on the focus ring while in autofocus which could be bad for future use. I did notice after a few uses that if your taking part in long exposures which I love to do, make sure you disable the Vibration Compensation which is a great addition given that some macros are taken all the way out at the telephoto range. Whilst the macros are solid, telephoto only creates a slight blur not from the camera but from distance pollution. I have yet to travel great lengths with this lens to get once in a lifetime photo opportunities, but for what Iâve done so far, the lens excels. Whilst taking night shots with this could be possible since a friend of mine captured the Milky Way at f4, I havenât tried it yet so I couldnât tell you. Other than that, the lens is great and I have offered some sample photos down below. All in all, this is a great overall lens for my canon T6.

The way they pack these things is bombproof they put it wrapped inside a lens bag or carrier and then inside a pelican style hard case. I don't think you could damage it in there. I wanted to evaluate this lens for possible purchase and found the 5 day rental to be exactly what I needed. I wanted a zoom to carry in the field that was not so heavy that it was back breaking or difficult to hand hold. The VC worked well enough if I used a higher shutter speed and in low light situations I pushed my ISO up and still got nice images. This is not a fast lens, but in daylight conditions it works fine enough given the cost and weight penalty one would pay for a faster lens. The sharpness was pretty good as I tested this at full zoom and then did a max crop with my Canon 90d to determine how well the image held up. I also felt that the manual focus produced the best result for an object not in motion.
