Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens for Nikon Z
The wider end of the Tamron A067Z 50-400mm Zoom Lens for Nikon Z Mount is particularly useful for side-line sports, wildlife and other subjects that move closer as you are shooting, allowing you to continue photographing without changing lenses. The precise arrangement of special lens elements effectively delivers uncompromising high image quality throughout the entire zoom range. The lens is incredibly compact at 185.8mm (7.3-inch) long and light at just 1180g (41.6oz). The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 VC is equipped with Tamron’s VXD linear motor focus mechanism and VC image stabilization mechanism. These features combine with others make it possible to capture sharp images and provide users comfortable shooting opportunities even when shooting wild birds and fast-moving sports action. Additionally, you can enjoy the world of half-macro photography with excellent close-up shooting capabilities. The MOD is a scant 0.25m (9.8-inch) at the 50mm end, and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2. Furthermore, you can customize certain functions and update the firmware via the Connector Port by using the dedicated Tamron Lens Utility. For this zoom lens, Tamron Lens Utility newly offers a ‘Focus Limiter’ function. The 50-400mm F4.5-6.3 VC is clearly a brand-new kind of ultra-telephoto zoom lens covering 50mm standard focal length, outstanding image quality and high portability. This one lens captures a lively world with all the clarity as you desire and can guide you to new photographic experiences.

The 50 to 400 range is awesome. However, with the A7RV body, I found I had to shut off the lens image stabilizaton (VC) because the EVF image jumps around when handheld. VC has two levels and neither worked. With it off, it was much easier to track a bird in flight. That's disapointing since I was counting on getting great stabilization using both VC and IBIS.For the range this lens has, it's touted as light. But at 2.5 pounds, using a 1.5 pound body and a nearly 1 pound cage, it's a heavy combo. So heavy it's hard to hold long enough to traverse the many Sony settings menus. That will be less of an issue when custom buttons are better exploited, though. Still, a 1" wide neck strap is unworkable. If Tamron are producing such a high quality precision product, how come they can't make a product whose lens mount meets the tolerances required to fit the Sony body for which it is intended? Slots into body but despite using some quite extreme force will not rotate onto camera body. I gave up before I damaged my camera. It is interesting that there is almost no stock of this product currently in the UK (May 2023). I wonder if this high quality lens manufacturer isn't having a supply chain issue but an issue that they fluffed it, and released lenses that simply don't fit. Maybe with your camera you will be lucky? Maybe you're prepared to twist it so hard that it breaks the lens mount off your camera trying, or ends up welded onto your camera for life? I'm an amateur photographer doing this for fun, and my opinions are limited to that use. I have several F-mount lenses accumulated over the years and am still using some of them on my Z6II with the FTZ adapter. Until now, my only Z-mount lenses were the 24-200 and the 28-75 f/2.8 both by Nikon. I find the Z-mounts to be lighter and more capable than the old F-mount lenses.I was debating between the Nikon 28-400 or this Tamron lens for a do-it-all travel lens and decided on it based on price and the faster f/6.3 aperture at 400mm. It does exactly what it claims to do. My comparison is to the old Nikon 28-300 F-mount on my D610. Some of the advantages are in the camera, but the pleasing bokeh and the overall sharpness of the image is the lens, which I am very satisfied with. I have no complaints about the focus speed or accuracy on the Tamron either. My other long telephoto lens is a Sigma 150-600 contemporary on a FTZ adapter and while this is a full 200mm shorter on the zoom range, it’s lighter and a more pleasing lens to use for me.This is not a light lens and you feel the 1.1kg weight when using or carrying it on a day trip. I took it on a recent trip and decided to take this and my Nikon 28-75 f/2.8 to cover wider shots while walking around in the city. While that strategy worked out in the city (especially at night with the wide aperture on the Nikon lens), I found that I had to switch lenses too often in the mountains and the seaside. There were times I wished I had brought just the Nikon 24-200 which is an excellent walk around lens for its versatility and the weight over the two lenses I took with me.These complaints are based on my experience. But it’s unfair to ding the lens for them as all that is known up front. The weight and dimensions of the lens are clearly stated in the product specifications. Target users would be aware that 50mm (while good for portraits) is not wide enough for most landscaping photography or group portraits. I bought knowing these limitations, but realized that it didn’t play out as I expected. That is on me alone, and anyone considering this lens should weigh the pros can cons carefully before purchasing. The lens itself is excellent for what it is.I have attached some JPEGs straight from the camera with this lens. Had to be resized to meet the upload file limit criteria. I shoot a 1/3 stop under and that will be reflected in these samples.

I let go of my 150-500 and 70-300 in favor of this lens. Although I have the 28-75 G2 and the 70-180 lenses, I find myself using this lens and the 17-28 on most if not all of my landscape photography trip. The lens is on the heavy side but my bag is light overall due to only having two lenses.Macro like capability is fantastic, I have done a lot of close up work with it. The range is fantastic. I use this lens for all but super wide shots which I do with the 17-28. Sharpness is on par with my 2.8 lenses. The only weakness is in the corners above 320mm. I stop the lens down to f11 or sometimes f13 to sharpen up the corners at the 400mm end. It never really goes 100% sharp but it is close enough. So, I think for the price and the performance, it is a winner
I bought this lens for two reasons, 1) it's practical focal range giving me the opportunity to carry only two lenses (along with the Sony 16-35mm F4 PZ) during landscape treks, and 2) build quality.I will also use this lens in Urban and Street Photography as a 50mm but for long reach to isolate certain areas in the scene. The VC in the lens along with the in camera body (Sony A7R V), makes it suitable and very useful hand held.Giving its focal range, this lens is lighter and smaller when compared to similar lenses. The price to quality and usefulness makes it a good deal and super versatile.
My current every-day lens for the Nikon Z system has been the 24-120/4, with which I am very happy for a broad range of photography. Recently, I found myself gravitating to longer focal lengths but my single lens travel solution, the 24-200, was still too short for isolating subjects at a distance. Wishing for 400mm at the long end, I found that Nikon's 100-400 was too pricy and too heavy for me, so I waited for the right fit. When the Tamron 50-400 came out, I was immediately interested in it as it was smaller, less expensive and had a more useful short range than the Nikon 100-400. I watched several videos and reviews of the identical lens with the Sony mount to get a good understanding of the features, pluses and minuses.Since purchase, I made an effort to get ... MoreMy current every-day lens for the Nikon Z system has been the 24-120/4, with which I am very happy for a broad range of photography. I watched several videos and reviews of the identical lens with the Sony mount to get a good understanding of the features, pluses and minuses.Since purchase, I made an effort to get used to the lens with various subjects and lighting conditions and am here to report that it is a wonderful solution with the Nikon Z6-iii at mid-to-far distances and even at some near-macro closeups. While it is larger and heavier than the 24-120 and you do lose speed, the image quality is outstanding. It will require a higher ISO for moving subjects but the Z6iii can handle the potential noise well. It has been on my camera more often than I expected and it is a great part of a 2-lens solution for travel by car within my region. For a lightweight, single lens travel solution, I will keep my 24-200.I believe that the Tamron 50-150 does not lend itself to subtle street photography because of its obvious size and weight. But for many other types of photography, such as landscapes, cityscapes, nature, zoos and sports, it has a place. It does require a well-designed strap for walking around and a monopod may be useful to relieve the weight when using it hand-held at long stretches of time. I use the Peak Design strap and it serves me well. When tried it out on a tripod, I did not feel that it was exceptionally front-heavy with my camera and L-bracket. A tripod collar is an option but the Tamron version is expensive. In summary, this is an outstanding lens for medium to longer focal lengths and it is highly recommended.
I picked up this lens because I needed the reach for military formal events. When there’s a large formation of troops, it was difficult to get important shots from the side lines with anything less than 200mm (on an A7IV). Conversely, staff would ask for closer portrait style shots after an event was over, and I’d be scrambling for my bag to grab an 85 or 24-70. This lens solves both problems excellently.I’m not a pixel peeper, but it has produced great results all around. I haven’t noticed any drops with autofocus and haven’t really noticed any CA in the corners.I had to take one star off just for the weight. I’m normally handholding and rarely if ever get to use a tripod, but after an hour or so you can definitely feel the weight of lens. Once used it on two shoots (nationally airing) so far, and it's a life-changer.Auto focus is very very accurate, and it seems to work very well with wide AF area, which can often confuse tele lenses (Sigma 150-600emount needed tap or zone, as it'd always pick the wrong thing to lock onto)Been using it on a second camera for interviews, and it feels like a bit of a joke being able to shoot at ~50mm for lots of it, but snap in to 400mm and isolate a mouth or eyes from 8' away. It's nuts to be able to do that with one lens.Haven't tested it's max focus speed yet, but so far it's been on 3-5/7 on the focus speed setting with FX6, and has 100% kept up.Macro aspect is a total bonus, didn't expect to benefit from that as much as I did. Totally adds to the one lens ... MoreOnce used it on two shoots (nationally airing) so far, and it's a life-changer.Auto focus is very very accurate, and it seems to work very well with wide AF area, which can often confuse tele lenses (Sigma 150-600emount needed tap or zone, as it'd always pick the wrong thing to lock onto)Been using it on a second camera for interviews, and it feels like a bit of a joke being able to shoot at ~50mm for lots of it, but snap in to 400mm and isolate a mouth or eyes from 8' away. Totally adds to the one lens shot options with this, makes run-and-gun doc shoots 2x as fast as having to lens swap to a macro, let alone a 400mm macro.Optical stabilizer works amazing for hand-held, but I'm exceptionally good at it, so might not save everyone, but I was able to nail 400mm shots real-time during a scene at a barber shop without the space or time to shoot on sticks. It's way way better than on the Sigma 150-600 e-mount, as it seems to let the image float more organically, and doesn't have a sharp jerk when you reach the end of it's optical movement. Totally usable shooting whales off a 21' boat, with a little gyro stab help from Gyroflow, which wasn't usable with the 150-600mm even at the same 400mm range or less.Biggest reason I hoped this would work so well is not having a huge risk to shoot without rails and lens support. I'd take it off when moving the camera, but it's rock solid if on sticks and only the FX6 body is on the plate. Makes run and gun use possible, without risking lens mounts and lens-contacts which are mission critical for AF to work.I'll update with any negatives if I find them, but so far it's easily 10/10 on all the points I bought it for, and it's over delivered with lots of extras! (like the macro, and great OS)Zero sharpness issues shooting 4K on FX6, flares are quite controlled and the hood works well, colours are great and match the sharp bright look of the Sigma 24-70/2.8 e mount very well.(Didn't buy from B&H, as it was on rebate for less within Canada, but posting here for the review)
I used the eclipse as an excuse to buy a long lens. After much analysis I decided that this lens was the best value. I am very pleased with my decision. The attached photos are from the April 8, 2024 eclipse. I was near Cleveland, Ohio where there were high cirrus clouds that obstructed photographing the corona during the event. But I was quite giddy when the focus assist zoom showed the prominences co clearly. For the partial eclipse portion, I used an ND 100,000. One of the nice features of this lens is that it has a 67mm filter thread, the same as most other Tamron lenses. This means I can use the same set of filters for all of my lenses.
