The 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 is the first model designed specifically for mirrorless system cameras with a full-frame sensor. The engineers' aim was to make telephoto photography an effortless pleasure for photographers, regardless of their level of experience. The 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 not only offers exceptionally high image quality, but with a length of 148mm, a diameter of 77mm and a weight of just 545g, it is also the world's most compact and lightest 70-300mm zoom lens in its class. The telephoto zoom makes it easier than ever to zoom in on distant subjects. The long focal length is not only suitable for sports, wildlife and nature photography, it also provides a flattering perspective for portrait and street photography. Used on a mirrorless system camera with a full-frame or APS-C sensor, the 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 forms an optimally balanced unit. An effective focal length of 450mm (KB equivalent) is achieved on the APS-C sensor. The splash-proof housing makes the 70-300mm F/4.5-6.3 the ideal companion for outdoor and travelling. Like the other models in the Tamron E series, it has a filter thread of 67 mm so that a polarising or grey filter fits on all models. The lens is also compatible with Sony's advanced camera functions, such as Fast Hybrid AF and AF with eye detection, which make photography even easier.

Badly declines above 200 mm and at distance

I like the range of 70-300, light weight, and price. But after 7 weeks, I collected wide enough diversity of images to compare performance under different conditions. I am shooting with a SONY A7R4, used extensively for flowers and birds in flight. All photos are in RAW format. Minimal processing in Lightroom. I very rarely mess with image sharpening. I find it to be a very comfortable weight for a walk-about lens. Surprisingly good for close up photos of small flowers with decent short working distance at ca. 100 mm focal length. Telephoto performance at high end is very uneven compared to the Tamron 100-400 and the SONY 200-600mm, and even the SONY 18-135 and SONY 18-105. Telephoto performance at high end is very uneven compared to the Tamron 100-400 and the SONY 200-600mm, and even the SONY 18-135 and SONY 18-105. The decline in performance appears at 200 mm and particularly at working distance of more than about 50-100 feet. Images of Birds In Flight (BIF) are fuzzy. Many of the photos are routinely taken with a tripod, and often with Bluetooth SONY remote control shutter activation. Parameters are similar to those with other lenses, in manual mode with shutter speeds of about 1/2000, aperture of f 8 to f11, Auto ISO between 100 and 3200, silent mode, IBIS OFF when on tripod with WImberley Gimbal head WH200. Most photos shot in APS-C mode as BIF are often cropped. Of the 420+ photos, the flowers and portraits were quite acceptable. But not a single one of the BIF at 250-300 mm at more than 100 feet distance were keepers. Landscape is OK, acceptable, though not really crisp at 18 mm. I am an amateur, not a pro, so can well admit that I am not an expert. However, results with even the Tamron 100-400 (Canon Mount and Sigma adapter) are close to performance of the outstanding SONY 200-600. FOcus performance on the Tamron 100-400 can't equal the SONY for speed of autofocus, and especially in dim illumination. But both the Tamron 100-400 and the SONY provide excellent 20x30 inch prints. The results with the Tamron 70-300 at longer zooms are not worth printing. But for a walk-around lens, it is a very comfortable weight at 1.2 pounds. The SONY 200-600 is more than 4.7 pounds, and the Tamron 100-400 is 3.2 pounds (with tripod collar and hood).Bottom line: very reasonable price, short working distance for small flowers, light weight. No good for BIF. Poor sharpness at higher zoom and distance 100 feet

I can't tell if I got a defective unit or if the lens is just mediocre. Autofocus was unreliable, especially at the midrange of the zoom. At some settings, the focus was good across the frame. At other settings, the focus was uneven across the frame. Sometimes it was sharper at the edges than at the center. It's not a lens I could rely on. I have other Tamron lenses that I like, but not this one.

Great for the Cost but Could be better......
9 June 2021

The lens is a Great lens for the price but it is definitely not the best. Used with AR7III the Auto Focus is somewhat slow as others have stated. The zoom rotation is somewhat tight and not as fluid as other zoom lens but the lens is a solid built lens with very good optics as long as you do not need to use for fast autofocus such as withsports the lens is a great addition but better for landscape and wildlife capture. If Tamron could address the focus speed they would have an all-around winner! For the price it is a great lens but know it does have its limitations.

Great lens for A7C
26 September 2022

I am an advanced amateur and mostly take family and travel photos. I mainly post pictures on social media and some of the photo sites. When I print, I mostly print on my Canon printer to 12x16. I was looking for a low-cost travel-friendly lens to give me some reach, and this lens fills the build. It worked well at my granddaughter's field hockey game. I kept the shutter speed up to reduce camera shake and to stop action. Clearly, this is a lens for outdoors. The weight and size fit well with the A7C. I am quite pleased with the image quality. Only taken a few hundred pictures with it, and have yet to take it on the road, but so far, so good.

Images are visibly better than those taken with Sony 70-300
18 April 2022

I sold my Sony OSS 70-300 lens because I wasn't satisfied with most of the images it produced on my Sony A7iii. Even when shooting at 1/320 or faster, the sharpness and resolution were often disappointing. So far I'm really impressed with my new Tamron 70-300. It costs less than half the price of the comparable Sony. More important, images are sharp, the colors pop and the bokeh is pleasing. Sure, I wish the lens had image stabilization, a side control button and a locking feature, but I don't miss the added weight of the Sony. The Tamron is incredibly light yet it still feels solid and smooth. In fact, because the lens is lighter and slightly narrower than the Sony, it's easier to pull from my bag and switch lenses on the fly. That means I'll reach for it more ... MoreI sold my Sony OSS 70-300 lens because I wasn't satisfied with most of the images it produced on my Sony A7iii. I had also considered the Tamron 70-180 2.8, which is a sweet lens and certainly better for low light or in situations where you want to limit depth of field. But in the end, I wanted the longer reach of the 70-300. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. It's a nice complement to my Sony OSS 24-105 4.0, which is my primary lens, and Sony 16-35 4.0. I keep a Sony 35 mm prime 1.8 for low-light situations.

Light weight travel gear
9 February 2022

Light weight travel gear for landscape, portraiture, wildlife and birding! Paired with Sony A7C makes for a perfect compact telephoto zoom setup for hiking and travelling! Sharp, versatile and with a great reach using Sony camera feature like Clear Image Zoom which in combination with APSC crop mode effectively give a 2.25 times image zoom without much loss in image quality. This means my little Tamron 70-300 when paired with this compact full-frame camera can zoom up-to 675mm of telephoto range!! Just perfect!!!

Lightweight and Very Sharp

I owned the Canon version of this focal range about 10 years ago. That was a fantastic lens. So is this lens. It is plenty sharp. Focusing and focus tracking are excellent. I was able to track a flying Osprey who had caught a fish some distance away. The bird was small in my frame, so I cropped it to get a larger image of the bird and the fish. To my surprise, I got a perfectly usable image after cropping. The bird was probably occupying about 5% of the frame. I used the lens with my Sony A7RIV and used the APSc mode to get to 450mm.On the trip this is the lens I used the most along with my Tamron 17-28. The combo is all I am going to bring on my next trip as I did not use any of the other Tamron lenses (28-75 and 70-180) I had with me.The 70-300 is very light. ... MoreI owned the Canon version of this focal range about 10 years ago. So far so good

It's been about a month. Playtime to find the lens is what most reviewers claim after more careful examination than mine. A good lens and a good value. I'm an 85 year-old higher end amateur. Carrying the lens all day attached to either my Sony A7II or A7III, most often strapped to my wrist, was not a chore. I wanted the 300mm and was happily surprised by the modest, even low light capability. At 85 I am not a tripod and purposely didn't use a tripod. The camera's stabilization did the trick as many pros have written. Focus was fast and spot on for my needs. Perfection center to edges is an unrealistic expectation at this price point, but my eyes were satisfied. A month+ in Europe will tell me a lot more.

Very good value
11 August 2022

I paid $450 for this lens but even at the MSRP of $550 it would be a great value. Autofocus works well and the images look sharp enough on my a7IV. The lens is very lightweight so I can bring it on outings when most super-telephoto lenses would be too cumbersome. I don't find the lack of stabilization to be an issue, with IBIS I'm able to shoot handheld at 300mm in moderate light and still get sharp images. The build feels solid enough, though the focus ring is somewhat stiff. I haven't needed the weather sealing yet but it's good to know it's there.
