I own the first generation version of this and although it is a great lens I'm finding that this new version is much improved! The build quality, image stabilization and autofocus are all next level. With the image stabilization on the G2 you can use a much slower shutter speed than the G1 resulting in much better low light shooting. Also the G2 has much better weather sealing. I love it. If you've had the first gen for any length of time do yourself a favor and get this lens. It might not be the Nikon 600 F4 that we all want, but for us mortals who don't have 11 grand to spend on a lens this comes close enough. Super sharp with my D500

This lens delivers on what it promises. The pictures are sharply focused, even at 600mm of zoom. The automatic focus is fast, but it does have its moments of indecisiveness. This can be limited or avoided by using the focus limiter switch set to the appropriate range (when you're focusing close-in or far off). Its size is manageable, even in wilderness settings, but its weight may cause difficulty for some. Bear in mind though that it is, in fact, one big hunk of glass wrapped in metal, so the weight is to be expected. All things considered, if you want to reach out to. 600mm worth of zoom, this lens is for you.

I am enjoying this lens so far, it works nicely with my D780 body. The sharpness is great and I see very little if any chromatic aberration in my photos. The lens is quite solidly constructed as well. The switches are sturdy and don't slide out of place from accidental brushes. The autofocus gets confused when shooting against the sky zoomed in higher than 300mm. I have missed a few shots because of this, but I learned to back off the zoom for flying birds until the lens gets zeroed in. My biggest qualm with this lens is that, while it fits snugly with the body, it will rotate a noticeable amount when locked in. It is barely enough to see, but it is enough to hear and feel, especially when rotating to zoom.

I will keep this short and to the point. I got this lens for two basic applications, shooting wildlife from a distance so I would not disturb the subjects and to open up some aspects of landscape photography where I can zoom in on some details but need some distance to get the view I am looking for. Initial impression straight out of the box is that the lens appears solid and well built. It’s very stout. I noticed a criticism of the lens hood on another review, I have no issues with it, it goes on and off easily. On camera I had no issues with the functions and/or connections. I enjoy manual shooting and everything works as it should. Image quality is really very good out to about 400, then starts to degrade a bit past that, but I would expect this drop-off for a ... I noticed a criticism of the lens hood on another review, I have no issues with it, it goes on and off easily. On camera I had no issues with the functions and/or connections. I enjoy manual shooting and everything works as it should. Image quality is really very good out to about 400, then starts to degrade a bit past that, but I would expect this drop-off for a lot of reason, not the least of which is some of my subjects are quite far off and there is a lot of atmosphere between the lens and subject, so any haze, dust, heat waves, Etc are bound to be amplified at this level of zoom. As I said, I enjoy manual shooting, including focus, so I have only used auto focus a little and it seems to work fast and accurately. Image stabilization isn’t something I will comment on because I primarily use the lens on a tripod and leave IS off. I will add that I have another Tamron lens that I have used at rodeos and other riding events where I did need IS and it really impressed me how well it worked. With regard to the tripod, your going to want a nice solid one, I tried it on my backing tripod and it was a little frustrating due to the movement being exaggerated by combination of the extreme zoom and the tripod not being as solid as it needed to be for this lens style. On my better (more solid) tripod it awesome, so no criticism of the lens, it just needs to be on a solid base. This is my second Tamron lens and I am very happy with both, I think they are producing excellent products. I would recommended this lens if your looking for good quality at a reasonable price.
I purchased this lens to shoot soccer in the Fall and softball in the Spring. I've only had a chance to shoot a few test shots, so the true test will come when the soccer season starts. But the few shots I've taken look acceptable, and the lens focuses reasonably quickly. But I can't imagine carrying this thing around in the woods and shooting hand held all day. Aside from the sheer weight, when fully zoomed to 600 mm, it's difficult to hold still and keep the subject in the viewfinder. And this lens is a bit lighter than the Nikon 200-500, weighing in at 4.38 pounds, versus the Nikon more than a half pound heavier at 5.07 pounds. Well, maybe I just need practice, but if you intend to use this lens hand held, get in shape! 3 stars, only because I have not used it ... I purchased the lens when it was on sale, but even at its regular price, I think it represents good value.
I take photographs as a hobby, and purchased this lens for my D7100 as an upgrade to an early generation Nikon 400mm zoom. The Nikon was sharp but very slow to auto focus as it uses the motor in the camera body. The Tamron 600 is not much heavier than the Nikon 400 was, but is blazingly fast to focus as long as you have PLENTY of light. The vibration stabilization is also excellent, and the bokeh is smooth and unobtrusive.I like to shoot water fowl, who can move quickly and unexpectedly, and the lens is comfortable being hand held. The zoom lock takes a bit of getting used to, but soon becomes quite natural.I have also had good luck so far with egrets and herons, even with hummingbirds, but only in well lit situations. Having said that, the auto focus is also excellent in low light situations with little or no motion, and I've taken satisfyingly sharp shots of the moon.I have had good luck in our neighborhood park shooting soccer, football and softball action, both in full sun as well as under stadium lighting. The fit and finish is solid and precise. The buttons all have a professional feel and the balance on a tripod is very good with my D7100.Overall, I am very pleased with this lens so far, and the only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I haven't lived with it for much time.I may come back and give it the last star if there are no unpleasant surprises.
I received my lens about two weeks ago. Unfortunately the weather has been pretty lousy and I have only used it a few times, so I am still getting used to a lens of this size and weight. Build quality of this lens is excellent, and it is weather sealed as well. Controls all work smoothly. It is heavier and harder to control handheld when shooting extended all the way out though than I thought it would be.I definitely need to work on my technique to get the best out of this lens, thats for sure. That being said, I have gotten some nice sharp photos so far, and I would anticipate getting better with using this lens as I get used to it. It definitely does better in good light during the day than it does in some of the lower light situations I used it in.One thing ... MoreI received my lens about two weeks ago. If your subjects are less than 10 meters away, set the limiter to the 2.2m-10m position and it will focus and lock faster than if you have it on full or the middle position. This is an excellent lens for the price, especially since it was on sale. It probably deserves a 5 star rating, but my reason for giving it 4 stars at this time is my needing to work on my technique, practice, and get better results when using this lens.
I read a lot of reviews and chose the Tamron 150-600 G2 over the competing field of similar lenses. In part because I already owned a Tamron 18-400mm. Plus the 150-600 was priced competitively, weather sealed, had the greater reach I needed, good vibration control, camera body upgradability with an FX lens, and the size & type of the tripod mount. After connecting the lens to my Nikon D7500 the weight and length was a surprise. None of my camera bags will hold it but the tripod mount makes a good balanced carrying handle for the short term. I have shot everything handheld because most of what I like to photograph is constantly moving in, out, and over our backyard so using a tripod or monopod isn't practical. The quality has been excellent with details that we hadn't noticed before. The moon, a possum, Starlings, squirrels, and sunsets results have been impressive. I expect focus issues when a bird is in a tree with limbs in front and behind sometimes causing sharpness to shift between points. Manual focus works well. I am very happy with my purchase, and it does what I was hoping for.
I have been testing this lens out a lot for a few weeks and am very happy with it. It is very sharp as good or better than my prize 300mm f4 d lens with even better contrast, but it is a stop slower. Compared to my old AI 600mm F5.6, it is as good or slightly better in sharpness and contrast but 1/3 stop slower. The weight is much less and I like the auto focus and VR. Both work pretty well but can be quirky now and then but not often. I was using a Df (D4 sensor) body getting the great results. On my D7200 Nikon, I gave up for most of my shooting with it since the sensor cannot resolve the detail as well, even with it's 24-7 megapixel in crop mode, advantage, having just too much mush and softness and grain, at 640 ISO or higher. This is about as low as I can go shooting birds in flight or deep woods shots. My guess would be it can resolve about 20-24 megs full frame, or about 11 or 12 in in a crop sensor. IMO cropped sensors manufacturers should not chase the megapixel race but work with less to achieve better ISO performance. So I give it a 5 star, for a full frame lower pixel count, a 3 star for crop bodies. Not to blame it all on the lens since atmosphere, and what the sensor can do with shadows areas, effects longer shots way more than the sharpness of the lens.Remember with all lenses, there is always comprises you must take and Tamron IMO, made some good give and take decisions with this lens. I almost bought the Nikon 200-500, but wanted better resolve at the long end and I liked the full weather sealing and all metal main body and clamp. Tamron was to me like Rocky in the first movie, they did not have a big name and fame to rest on but have to really push the limits of design to contend with Nikon, and and I think the effort paid off. Look at the 70-200 G2 coming in 1/2 price yet about as good as Canon and Nikon's 70-200s. That has got to have shaken the market, a real plus for the consumers. I do not buy the statements that the big 2 are made so much better, especially when they weigh nearly the same and test so close. Having many repairs and poor QC from Nikon bodies and a lens in the past. I gave Tamron another chance, not having good experiences with some Tamrons I have owned. Time are changing with this world market we have.
I'll try to keep it short: If after using this glass for a while you don't feel it's up to snuff, return it to Tamron. Yes, it takes time and costs money, but that's how life rolls sometimes. After evaluating my copy of this lens with a friend's 200-500, I was disheartened to the point I was going to trade it in for the Nikon. It was all packed up and ready to go back to B&H. Thankfully, after a good night's sleep, I sent it to Tamron instead.I'd adjusted the D500 fine focus (several times), and also used the tap-in console to get the absolute best focus the lens could provide. The tap-in console settings also changed. Tamron's report on their service invoice stated pretty much nothing but cleaning, but that could not be true. There was ;more to it than a simple cleaning for the drastic change in settings.I'm now happy as a clam with this glass. I use it for bird photography, much of it for ID at a distance. I've gotten usable photos at distances and under conditions where it's original condition would have failed. I've gotten sharp photos (for a zoom...have to be realistic) all the way out to 600mm.If after you've had this lens past the return period and you're not happy with it, return it to Tamron. It may well be worth the wait.
