achiThe Tascam Model 24 lets you have more time to be creative and lay down more tracks. Simple to use controls yet advanced enough to act as a DAW interface. Everything an experienced audio engineer has become used to in a real recording studio console. Items such as 100 mm faders to multi-band EQ and on-board effects processing lets the operator set the appropriate controls to achieve great recording. I have used this mixer/recorder for almost 7 months and it has produced HD quality audio for my projects. So many features& ways to control audio to and from the console. I would highly recommend this to any newbee or experienced recording enthusiast. There is nothing quite like the analogue and digital hybrid design configuration. I needed a board for mixing and recording live gigs - without a sound guy. (I own an Allen Heath SQ5 digital mixer, a Soundcraft GB mixer, etc - but often they are too complex to mix and play at same time without a sound person). So I ordered in a demo Model 24 from American Musical just two days before a gig at a cool small venue in Vermont where we had Jackson Browne's really tasteful guitarist sitting in, so I wanted to record it track-by-track. The build quality feels excellent and gotta love the retro analog style mixer appearance. In short, it worked perfectly. The mic pre's are extremely clean. The EQ and FX is fine/useable (they do NOT print to recording). We left the compressors on very low as they do print to tape. In between sets I started a new "song" on the SD card for safety, but it ran for 1:14 without a glitch, 14 tracks simultaneous recording at 24/48 during the first set. The live sound in that venue was as good as I've heard it using the Model 24. And after the gig, I imported the tracks from SD card onto my Mac and into Logic, and listened both through Focal Twin Be monitors and Sennheiser SD600 headphones and the sound quality is excellent. The only shortcoming for live is only 2 monitor mixes, which may be fine for smaller bands/venues (the application this was clearly designed for.) If your application is track-by-track recording and overdubbing, I cannot speak to that application. But if you need an "analog style" mixer for mixing a small band and doing live all-at-once track-by-track recording, at a very good price for the quality you are getting, I HIGHLY recommend this Model 24. You will not be disappointed.

Call me a geek, but I just love all of the knobs, sliders, plugs, push buttons and lights! This thing is the coolest looking board out there! Whats more is that it functions like the pro equipment in the good ole days with all of the modern features that any tech geek of today would enjoy! The multi track recording features are awesome as is the interface with your computer! Tascam has outdone themselves with this fantastic model 24. The simulated wood grain edges are beautiful and give It that retro feel. Ive had mine about 3 weeks now and I get excited every time I go into my home studio and fire this gorgeous board up! One definition for power is “potential energy.” This console has a magnificent potential to make electrons flow in various directions for such an affordable box.I would love to detail the controls for readers, but I feel confident that if you are researching this particular product, then you already know the controls and I will not insult your skill level. However, I would say, “Spend the little extra and get the 100 mm faders!” The sensitivity is far, far greater than 60 mm.The manual for the 24 is simple and operation of the board is intuitive. I was an electronics technician for years, so I am one of those geeks who like to read manuals! Who the heck wants to read the news?My first connections were simple. I connected up my Alesis Nitro drum kit, which I purchased along with the Tascam, to the board and plugged in a pair of shelf monitors. A few minutes were spent playing the drums through the board while adjusting the overall volume levels of each component of the kit, as monitored through the speakers, until I was happy with the mix.Next, the 24 was paired with my phone via Bluetooth: Easy, peazy! I play at church and we get the weekly song index through the Services APP. Within minutes of unwrapping the 24, I was rehearsing along with the list of mp3s playing from my phone. My wife plays keys at church, so, next, she was connected up. What a great way to get familiar with a new song! After some familiarity by playing with a new song, we dropped the mp3 and added the 24’s internal click track as we do play alongside a metronome live in service. So, after two rehearsals, we felt like professionals and pressed on to take a turn at recording. The wife is a soprano with a voice degree and all that yadda, yadda, yadda, experience, and her range can be tough to capture. We played around with slight compression, and other effects, while capturing her voice in dynamic ranges and WOW! The 24 works well. The compression gave her voice that full and even sound that it should.Other features of the board are easy to operate, ie., punch in, loading tracks, etc. We really look forward to expanding the number of ways to use this console, one of which, is to track a few original songs and experiment with creativity on our awesome new Tascam 24.
At first glance it looks like any analog mixer. Till you use it, the preamps are amazingly powerful, it took only minutes to dial in complex effects that took me days on my other effects devices, I.e. line-6pod, Lexicon, Helicon. The recording is simple and straightforward, a few clicks and go! I watched a few videos, but only needed to glance at the informative manual a couple times, playing backing tracks through the Bluetooth sounds excellent. Bluetooth 4.0 according to manual. Sounds better than that. The mix was easy and background hiss on turning the sliders or pots way up was non-existent. No pop on power down on my powered speakers when shutting down mixer first. This unit was designed to put on live shows. Unlike my old porta+studio the recorded tracks ... MoreAt first glance it looks like any analog mixer. Totally worth the money, don't need to haul more gear to get the music out there!! Thanks Tascam for making a product for musicians and engineers! A+++++ product. Definitely for singers, definitely for musicians who don't need 20 layers of confusing functions just to lay down tracks. Make music.
First of all, great service by B&H as this unit arrived in one day, and they had great pre-sale support when I had questions about recording times and other features. I am using this mixer/recorder with my live band, and I love this thing! It is super easy to work, and it sounds great (very warm sounding and “punchy”). The main reason that I got this unit was for the built-in MULTI-TRACK recorder. Lots of mixers have a two track recorder, but this is the only one that I know of that allows you to record each individual channel. You can quickly re-mix and re-balance the recording to create a great sounding live mix. You can quickly re-mix and re-balance the recording to create a great sounding live mix. I have to say that it is the first time in my 15-year career as a live performer that I have actually gotten a “board tape” that sounds good! Keep in mind that you can do this WITHOUT a computer!! If you want to use a computer (or if you want to take tracks off of Pro Tools or something) and then re-mix them through the board, you can do that, but I have been able to make great sounding live recordings without dragging my laptop to the gig (a very good thing in my opinion). I also really like the on-board one knob compressor (although it can sound a bit “squashed” if you push it too hard). The built-in effects sound great (would like more choices, but what they do have is very useable). All in all, I’m very happy with the sound quality and especially the ease of use.
I use it for live recording, multitrack recording, and mixing. I have found that using it in a daw can be kinda glitchy so I just use the standalone functions. It works great for room recording and it even has built in Bluetooth receiver that has almost no latency. There's 2 stereo TRS channels and 18 Mono TRS channels on the 20 XLR inputs. 1 RCA aux is built into the Bluetooth channel. Stereo out monitor room and control room only one headphone out so you might want a headphone Amp to be fully equipped for live monitoring.
This reminds me of my old Tascam Cassette 4 Track. Difference is, I can record hours without hitting stop. It's a good board for rehearsal and performance space. It sounds really good. It captures everything that is happening without making any sacrifices.I am able to record the band multitrack and take the SD Card home and drop it into Logic. If you are looking for something to record a band and then do all of your overdubs, editing, and mixing in a DAW. This is the thing to have.
I've had the M24 for about 13 months now. I've read complaints about the universal 48V power-(buy a couple preamps),the latency-(get off the computer), the "build quality"- really? it's a Tascam, go buy a Neve board... Anyway, I have nothing negative to say except perhaps I agree with the folks who say the manual isn't much help because it's really not very in-depth. That, and the lack of a mastering processor built in. (I transfer the stereo mixes to a DP-08 and master them in there-it works great.) I purposely waited for a spell to review this unit so I could give an informed opinion. I absolutely love it. Maybe one day I'll buy a good reel/reel tape machine but until then you couldn't drag me in front of a computer screen to record music.
I want to resolve some uncertainty about this unit. For people wanting to do layer recording, like you've done with your Portastudios, you'll likely be frustrated by this unit. In fairness, Tascam does not call it a Portastudio or market it for layer recording. But I did read the professional reviews, marketing materials, and product manual before buying, and I was confident I'd be able to use the overdubbing and punch-in features and basically record my songs one instrument at a time like I'd done with other all-in-one recorders. I knew going in that it lacked features like track bouncing and individual channel assignment of the inputs. What I didn't expect was for its time location features to be so limited. I found it extremely inconvenient to set time markers. The unit clearly builds on the Portastudio's recording technology, but they chose not to include most of the navigation features. I had to return it, because I'm not willing to spend 30 seconds between each take fumbling with the little knob that controls the clock, and frankly I can't imagine any knob getting that much use and working right after a couple years. < I know what I said.> I was looking forward to doing full band recordings with it and sometimes using it as an interface. I think it would be great for those things, which, again, is how it's marketed. I'm not trying to be unfair, but I think I had made some reasonable assumptions about its usability that others will similarly make. Seems like a quality build, like all Tascams I've used.
