The legend not only lives but is better than ever, with the Technics SL1200G. A legend in the home, studio and club Developed as a turntable that was sturdy enough to be used professionally but simple and attractive enough to use at home, the Technics SL1200 was a hit from the beginning. Starting life in the early '70s, the SL1200 lived through five versions (in the UK) and, even at its demise in around 2010 was still seen by many as the reference deck for club use. Now it's back and, in G form, it's the best ever regular model! The best SL1200 ever The Technics SL1200 has always been superbly built but this is even better. Added to the existing three-layer chassis is a new, 10mm thick top panel, crafted from solid aluminium. This provides superior damping for a more dynamic sound. A newly developed, coreless motor is used to cut down on vibration with twin rotors providing high torque and an even load on the bearing. In short, the new SL1200G shouldn't just be the best-sounding but also the hardest wearing - with a weight of 18kg to prove it. High spec magnesium tonearm Unique to the top spec SL1200G is a magnesium tonearm (the standard models feature an aluminium one). Lightweight magnesium offers a high damping effect; quelling distortion. It’s also extremely rigid, helping the tonearm offer the most precise and detailed sound. I love this deck. It is easy to use, and outperforms the MKII models. My only issues are 1: The spindle could be a little taller, and 2: The tonearm height should go down farther. On the one I purchased, the tonearm height when set to Zero, does not go flush with the adjusting ring, and that makes it hard to set up some cartridges. Either a shim on the headshell, or a thicker mat is needed. The problem with using a thicker mat is then the spindle height. Other than that, it’s basically perfect. If you have many cartridges like I do, then the shimming becomes an issue. I opted for a thicker MKII mat. Still a wonderful unit.

Less background rumble, getting more detail out of the grooves. The tonearm is low mass, more stiff and better insulated to prevent feedback. However, since the tonearm is made from an alloy of magnesium, a graphite or magnesium headshell is highly recommeded to prevent resonance (and disappointment) caused by different stiffnesses of materials. The supplied ground cable is rather cheap, but luckily its an all modular design when it comes to cables, so it can be swapped with a better cable. This is an incredibly well built turntable, the weight of it speaks for itself, it is a vast improvement on the old design. The staff at richer sounds were very helpful and informative and did not hesitate to give me a massive discount as I bought two of these to replace my old SL1200 MKII's which I've owned for over 20 years and are also still in perfect working order. Yes these are very pricey but when you love playing vinyl and you see and feel one of these units you'll soon realise that you 'get what you pay for'. Invest in yourself and treat yourself is my advise to anyone who's thinking of buying one or even two of these.
From the moment you unpack the deck from the box, to setting it up, to playing your favourite vinyls you can tell the deck is worth every penny. Precision functionality and beautiful on the eye.
The sound quality is superb - paired with an Ortofon 2M black cartridge and headshell - I can hear every detail in the sound - makes me smile every time I put on a record. The build quality is phenomenal - this will last forever if well looked after. Out performs my old Rega in so many ways - but should do considering the price!
I'd been looking to replace my old trusty J A michell focus one from 79 for a while . My main criteria was it had to be of a older design, I'd been considered a sl 1200 mk 2 , but naturally there were no mint condition mk2s around at time of looking. So after weeks of trying to justify a 3k outlay I thru gritted teeth took the plunge , it arrived and I could bearly carry it ,,set it up and have never looked back the best deck I've ever had , built like a panzer, sounds out of this world, I'm currently using a nagaoka mp200 a match made in heaven. Highly recommended.
Having owned more expensive belt driven turntables including Linn, Rega & Michell, I was not expecting such a substantial step up in audio quality from the SL1200G. The deepest, tightest, cleanest bass I have heard on a turntable, together with perfect pitch and pin-point image clarity. I cannot praise this table highly enough.
I have previously owned a couple of rega decks and then more recently a pair of 1210 mk 3s. I was considering going down upgrading the power supply etc on one of my 1210s but decided in the end to take the jump and bought the 1200g. This has been a great move for me coming from the 1210s. It has meant I have retained all that great usability and build quality while enjoying a massive boost in audio quality. Highly recommended.
moved up from a 1210mk7 to the 1200G based on several reviews (print and online) as well as some dedicated advice.having installed it and had a few listens this truly is a step up from your 'average' technics. the sounds is pretty uncoloured and precise. absolutely in love
