The OP-1 field represents over a decade of musical innovation packed into one revolutionary portable synthesiser. This natural evolution of the beloved original features stereo signal processing throughout, Bluetooth MIDI connectivity, USB-C charging, and an impressive 24-hour battery life. The redesigned aluminium body sits lower around the keyboard for a lighter, more precise feel, while the new speaker system with passive driver produces detailed, powerful sound that defies its compact size. Professional musicians and sound designers will appreciate the enhanced sampling capabilities, with the new stereo sample engine offering up to 20 seconds of recording time and dual layer mode for instant A/B channel mixing. Four distinct recording formats—studio 4-track, vintage 4-track, Porta and Disc Mini—each bring their own sonic character and visual identity. With support for up to 8 tapes or discs total, creative possibilities expand dramatically beyond the original's limitations. As part of Teenage Engineering's field system, the OP-1 field pairs seamlessly with the TX-6 portable mixer to create an incredibly powerful, battery-powered recording and performance setup. Full compatibility with iOS, macOS and Windows, combined with high-resolution audio and MIDI interconnectivity, makes this the most capable portable music production system available today. A recent firmware update adds the iconic vocoder to the OP-1 field's sonic arsenal—the same technology that shaped electronic music through artists like Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock and Daft Punk. Now you can sculpt and synthesise vocals directly on the device without additional gear, bringing decades of electronic music history to your fingertips.

The OP-1 is a legend, and it does not disappoint. I am not a musician and have little experience with music making and recording. Nevertheless, the OP-1 is immediately intelligible, and it's quick to start making great sounds. It's hugely fun. Of course, I'm sure it's an excellent professional-grade instrument, but for my uses - as someone learning something new for the pure enjoyment of it - this is a brilliant device. Also, B&H has wonderful customer service (they sorted out a problem quickly and clearly) so I recommend buying from here.

This is my first synth/electronic instrument and i have not been able to put it down since i got it. It took about 4 hours to learn the basics but im still learning features after a month of solid use. Its a beautiful and well designed instrument that just makes me feel inspired to create just because its so much fun and intuitive to use. Im sure there are more powerful workstation synths out there and you could always get a computer and midi controller but i like being able to just turn the power on and start jamming no matter where im at. Kind of like a music sketchbook. Its also a great live instrument. Had a lot of fun jamming with friends laying down loops or playing keys. I think its worth the price if you feel like the workflow is right for you. Like i said ... MoreThis is my first synth/electronic instrument and i have not been able to put it down since i got it. Now that i got the bug im sure ill buid a modular at some point but i feel like this is the perfect gateway instrument. Also perfect circuit is awesome. Im glad to support local business. They shipped super fast and packed it with lots of bubble packs. Definitely gonna order from them as i get more gear.

Just Wow.
2 March 2022

I have had many synths, samplers, and drum machines but none like this. It has it all powerful synth engines, so many built in sounds, effects, and then the variable speed TAPE RECORDER function just completes the package and takes it all to the next level for experimentation and keeping it all from ever getting old. Is it worth the $1000+ that people are paying? Maybe not and you can find other gadgets to level up with. But I got it for ~$800 and between this and my 404 I feel I am set for life. Just yesterday I sampled a sound my son made, spread it across the keys and multi-tracked a beat with it in minutes, all without a computer. There is still so much I have to learn with it and I dont expect to ever find something I cant feasibly accomplish with it.

Major Upgrade

Very happy with this new version of the OP-1 Field. There are so many improvements compared with the OG but here are my favorite features.Sound Quality- The OG sounded very digital/lo-fi. The Field sounds hi-fi and so much better; even all the older instruments sound great.New Synth and Effect- Dimension synth (traditional subtractive synth engine) was something that was missing from the OG and is a very welcome and useful addition- Mother reverb sounds lush and phenomenal- The old spring reverb also now sounds amazing in 32bit audio.ConnectivityConnectivity has been significantly improved. Very liberating. Here are some I have tried:- Midi over Bluetooth both ways- Connect Midi hardware via USB and the Field acts as a midi host; I connected my LaunchPad Pro mk3 to play Field patches with velocity sensitivity and sequence drums- Connect an iPad over USB-C and send audio from the iPad to the OP-1sampler- Connect a high quality USB microphone to the OP-1 and record my guitar to the tape tracks- It really feels like a portable DAW or studio nowBuild QualityThe OG was already one of the most premium and beautiful instruments I have owned but everything on the Field feels even better.- Screen looks amazing- Feels very solid and well put together; knobs feel good, keys are all even- USB C portMuch of the discussion has been about the price of the Field. I agree it is very expensive. Having it in my hands and using it, it feels like a premium high-quality product. It sounds amazing and can do so much. Here is another way of thinking about it; the OP-1 Field is Teenage Engineering's flagship workstation, it just happens to be very small but very powerful.

Overpriced, but awesome

I really like this little thing. I never had the original OP-1, so this was completely new to me. It's still taking me some time to get used to it, but there's some great tutorial videos on youtube. The sound on it is great. Really cool and unique effects. Lot's of good presets and it's easy enough to customize and save my own. Some of the limitations, like no undo, actually make me step out of my comfort zone and work harder or come up new ways of doing things that I may not have even tried otherwise. Still, it is a little scary to record live over existing audio sometimes.Overall, I'm pretty happy with the purchase. One of the biggest things I wish was that they had more, and deeper, documentation. It only comes with a tiny little book that covers the basics of everything the synth can do (tons of typos).

Review of Teenage Engineering OP-1 Field
13 April 2023

This is a love-hate piece of gear, but I certainly fall into the 'love' category. It is one of the most inspiring pieces of hardware you can get, it gives you all sorts of tools to create sounds and then makes you commit to decisions in a creative way... I love it. This is a major upgrade over the original OP-1, in terms of sound and extra features. Make sure you upgrade firmware regularly too, as they add new stuff regularly e.g. the vocoder that just turned up. I am going to say that this is excellent value for money, too, as it does so much and inspires even more.

Preface this: I'm an OP-1 nut. I love it. I use it. I can't get enough of it. This OP-1 Field edition is everything it says it is and more. An insane upgrade. Imagine not upgrading your iphone for 10 years and then BAM Apple drops the ultimate device. This is that device. The ultimate for what it is. And iykyk when it comes to Teenage Engineering stuff. Love it or leave it.
