Pros: Stylish and well made.Cons: The instructions are too vague and for first time users, there is insufficient guidance in how to get the all important grind setting right. I’m fortunate to have a background in commercial coffee machines, so very quickly worked out that the pre-set of 15 for the grind was far too course. Mine is now set at 9 - perfect for the right extraction. It would help if they narrowed down the grind needed for different types of coffee production - espressos, filter etc. The steam is created by a flash boiler and not by a big hot water boiler. The steam is therefore not as aggressive and takes longer to get air into the mix. The technique for this isn’t clear on the instructions but once mastered, it’s very straightforward. Bought the Barista pro about 1 month ago. I actually had a video chat with one of Sage's baristas to discuss some of my concerns and questions which I found really useful, so off to a good start even before buying the machine. The machine arrived well boxed. At first glance it has the feeling of a high end machine, robustly built with good quality parts. The set up was easy and the instructions coherent. The dial-in process can consume some time at first but that's part of the experience. Once the machine was dialled in, the result was excellent shot after shot. The grinder has more than enough grind settings. It is surprisingly consistent in the amount of the coffee it grinds. The grinder has more than enough grind settings. It is surprisingly consistent in the amount of the coffee it grinds. The espresso pulled from the machine is actually really good - the water temp control plays a big part. The steamer is very easy to use, although milk frothing might require some practice. The screen is good-size and bright. Menu is easy to navigate. 5/5 stars without doubt and will be definitely recommending.
My requirements - I bought this after a lot of research. I wanted a machine that could grind beans consistently but also allow me additional controls such as pre infusion timing and manual shot timings. My choices - That led me to 2 machines. The pro and the express. The reality is you don’t need a pressure gauge. But what you do need (but you don’t know it)… is a machine that can turn on and be ready instantly. This does it. The express takes about 30 seconds! My experience - I’m very pleased. Yes you have to dial the beans in but you can do it in a couple of shots of every new bag of coffee. The quality of the espresso I’m extracting is immense. Perfect balance. The photos speak for themselves. Very pleased.
I had an interesting experience with this machine.Upon getting it, it didn't complete even the first (cleaning) cycle - the cycle abruptly ended after only 2 seconds. I checked multiple times and rearranged every possible moving part, but nothing. The water didn't leave the tank, at all. After 3 days of leaving it alone, the machine decided to complete the cleaning cycle and after that, the espresso-making part worked perfectly. The second issue that arise after I got the water to flow correctly, was the grinder, which had issues with grinding - after a few tries, I got out 1/8 of the expected coffee amount. I took the whole thing apart at least 3 times, cleaned it all, switched the coffee, and watched all instruction videos on official channels and elsewhere, ... MoreI had an interesting experience with this machine.Upon getting it, it didn't complete even the first (cleaning) cycle - the cycle abruptly ended after only 2 seconds. I took the whole thing apart at least 3 times, cleaned it all, switched the coffee, and watched all instruction videos on official channels and elsewhere, but nothing helped. Judging by the sound, it seemed like the motor wasn't strong enough to handle beans, because it stopped rotating the grinder, but it rotated perfectly when running empty. The support was not helpful AT ALL and was so slow to respond, just kept sending me the same instructions as on the YT channel, so I ended up returning it. I would like to re-order it, but I'm scared that the same issue will happen again.Overall I like the concept of this machine, it's compact, and everything is well-thought, but it seems like it has many issues when it comes to actual use.
I bought this machine 3 weeks ago. It was easy to set up and almost ready to start making fresh coffee right out the box. You have to experiment with different coffees in order to find the one you like, but then that means you have to fiddle with the grind in order to extract the right amount of coffee and the preferred strength - but that's standard with any machine. This can take some time, so be patient.I had an issue after about 2 weeks with the machine in that is started to vibrate a lot. To a point where the cup would not sit still under the portafilter during the extraction process. I contacted John Lewis and got it exchanged. I now have my replacement machine for a few days and so far everything is as it should be.I like the digital display which works ... MoreI bought this machine 3 weeks ago. The machine looks great and is a nice focal piece for any kitchen. It doesn't take up a lot of space on the counter too.
After much consideration, research and recommendation on Sage from family we bought this machine in black to match our kitchen. The machine itself works well and produces good coffee (once you learn how to use it properly and find good beans). However we are left feeling very disappointed by the cosmetics of the machine, having paid extra for black it's awful to find the black bubbled and chipping after just SIX weeks. We haven't used anything on it to clean other than wiping with warm water and drying off. It is clearly a defect in the paint in the machine so we got in touch with John Lewis who said they can only deal with the cosmetics within 30 days and we would need to go to Sage, they kindly placed the call for us after seeing our pictures and understanding why ... MoreAfter much consideration, research and recommendation on Sage from family we bought this machine in black to match our kitchen. The machine itself works well and produces good coffee (once you learn how to use it properly and find good beans). JL have now said they will refund us the cost of the replacement part which is the tray that slides out so we can purchase from Sage website. Thank you JL for solving the problem we are just happy we purchased from you otherwise I'm sure we would never get a response from Sage having seen first hand their terrible customer service. Such a shame for the cost of this brand.
I have had the machine for almost a month now but still find I’m not getting coffee how I like it. I “attended” the masterclass but cannot get my coffee hot. I like a “long” coffee with a frothy milk top but I cannot get more than a small shot of black coffee from the machine, I have tried putting in hot water separately then the shot of coffee but then the coffee is Luke warm and weak - I’m beginning to wonder if I have a faulty machine. The “frothy” milk does warm the coffee up a bit but I don’t like too much milk so it’s just a little bit of froth on top. I wanted to use my “Denby cappuccino cups” but this is proving a problem as the coffee gets so cold quickly so have reverted to using a standard mug. I’m at a loss as to what I could be doing wrong. I wanted to use my “Denby cappuccino cups” but this is proving a problem as the coffee gets so cold quickly so have reverted to using a standard mug. I’m at a loss as to what I could be doing wrong. Before this machine I used a DeLonghi machine and got hot long black coffee from it. Also I like to have decaf in the afternoons but when I take the hopper off the coffee beans still remain in the grind area so I have to waste a whole grind to get rid of them before I add decaf beans and then I have to do the same again when I change back to ordinary coffee beans. I was going to buy a second hopper but think this would be a waste of money (about £30) as beans remain in the grind area.
I've had this machine now for a month. The build quality is impressive. The feel of sturdiness you get when you lock in the portafilter is unique. It takes about 20 espressos to dial in but I am not missing the pressurised basket of my previous machine at all.The timer function is actually very useful when dialling in.As advertised, super fast warm-up time, but obviously time to warm up the portafilter properly is necessary. This is easily achievable though through proper flushing of the system.Settings and customisation are a breeze with the screen. The grinder is decent but sometimes inconsistent in quantity, which seems to depend on how full the bean hopper is. This is easily achievable though through proper flushing of the system.Settings and customisation are a breeze with the screen. The grinder is decent but sometimes inconsistent in quantity, which seems to depend on how full the bean hopper is. Also, grinding is time based, not quantity based, so changes in grind settings will lead to different quantity if time left unmodified. Once dialled in, this should not be an issue but if you change beans frequently it requires work. Also, the grinder does not cause a mess, as seen on some youtube videos, unless one uses an unrealistic dose.Knobs are (perhaps too) sturdy.Steamer definitely needs practice, not your usual panarello wand.Only complaint: the silver backsplash should be made of metal (it seems to be made of some kind of plastic) for longevity.Only point of dissatisfaction: on the day I bought the machine, the web site clearly pictured the DOSING FUNNEL among the range of included accessories. This did not come with the machine and when I went to enquire I realised that that picture had been removed from tho whole range of Sage machines, so I had to buy it separately.Still, best £15 I've spent.
