I strongly advise avoiding this particular model, it is nigh impossible to make a consistent cup of coffee. Despite eating my life and changing all of the settings meticulously (and having used the same premium bean for over a year, owned a similar cost DeLonghi & am a trained barista) you just can't make a great or simply even a just about acceptable good coffee. Not good. The machine over & under extracts cup by cup, in short an exercise in teeth grindingly frustrating futility. Coupled with this is the ludicrous manner in which beans are presented to you after they are ground, a la a mole hill that you somehow have to try and manage to not spill everywhere & expected to use a gimmicky "blade", prior to using the tamper for coffee optimisation. And no I don't expect to have to buy a funnel as an extra add on in a cynical ploy to garner even more revenue by Sage.Coupled with this is that Sage proudly have the worst level of customer service I have experienced in quite some time, it's laughably bad. Should you encounter problems with a machine, the protocol is to redirect you to Sage. If you actually manage to get through, despite having valid warranty they will attempt to prompt a number of unacceptable hoop jumps that are way beyond what can be perceived to be acceptable in terms of consumer rights legislation. However don't just take my word for it check out general reviews on sites that John Lewis refuse to let me mention here.

Bought a Barista Express a couple of years ago at the start of lockdown to get me through until the coffee shops opened again, but this actually changed my whole coffee experience, and I will NEVER go back. I used this machine several times a day, EVERY day since purchase and other household members used it as well for iced latte's etc...it performed faultlessly since purchase, and I experimented with so many different types of beans, eventually purchasing a Sage Smart Grinder Pro as well. I got the new one direct from Sage whilst on offer but to be honest, I would have quite happily paid full price as I am so impressed with it. Amazing coffee every time with very little prior knowledge required. I eventually found the grinder a little too basic for some beans and that is where the smart grinder pro comes in to complete the package. The Sage Dual Boiler will be the next step up, but for now I am perfectly happy with the Barista Express.

I love this machine. It makes great coffee (although as other reviewers say you do need to persevere to get it right) and it looks gorgeous in my kitchen. BUT I have either been really unlucky or they are not reliable machines. I bought my first machine in June 2019. In early May 2021 the hot water and steam nozzle stopped working and John Lewis replaced it as it was still within the two year guarantee. The replacement though only had a 1 year manufacturers guarantee. In November 2022 (6 months after this guarantee had expired) the machine has broken once again. This time it won't turn on - no power at all. Checked sockets and plugs and all working fine so clearly an electrical fault in the machine. And no warranty to cover a repair. The amount this machine cost I really wouldn't expect it to break after 18 months. I look after it as per the manufacturer's instructions so don't feel this is user related. Am very disappointed by the experience and don't feel this is value for money. And not the quality I would expect from a John Lewis bought product. So think twice before you spend this kind of cash on this machine as you may not get the life expectancy you might be wanting.

Bought by my fmily as a Christmas presnet nearly four years ago for two subsequet years the Barista Express was a marvel and I so enjoyed using it. Then it broke down and we took it to John Lewis the authorised sellers and it was repaired. Mind you a heavy machine to be carting around shopping centres!! It has finally failed after fourand a half years. regularly descaled and cleaned (4 to 6 monthly). No water extracts through the portafilter little pressure from the steam wand. One repairer stated that parts were too expensive and difficult to obtain and has avoided Sage products. I await Coffee Classics response with interest and depending on their analysis of the problem I may or may not rebuy. Would I recommend to a friend who I wished to remain a friend NO! My little inexpensive Gaggia was not so much fun but despite us carting it back and forth to Devon performed for many years!
I have had my coffee machine for 2.5yrs now. It was bought during the first lockdown, and it had a really positive impact on the household. It was nice to have a little luxury during the bleak times. The machine looks amazing and makes a showpiece in the kitchen. The experience of making a coffee was enjoyable and the drinking of the coffee was even better. This machine makes fantastic coffee! Once you have worked out the correct settings for the bean you are using, it really is a fabulous machine. However the bad side. The machine comes with a 2 year warranty. After 2.5yrs the steam and hot water function stopped working. Sage offered to fix it for £199.99! Almost half the cost of the machine. It does make nice coffee, but at the expense of over £600 for 30 months ... MoreI have had my coffee machine for 2.5yrs now. I sadly won’t be replacing or buying Sage again. I have always been of a mindset that you need to spend money to get better quality. However, in this instance I have spent the money but received the quality of a much cheaper product.
We were looking for a machine that allowed us to do the steps manually, rather than a "one press bean to cup" machine, and this fits our requirements perfectly. The integrated grinder allows us to set the grind fineness and amount to put into the basket, then you can see the pressure achieved during extraction (making the espresso) on the pressure gauge so you can tell if you've got the right fineness of coffee and the right amount for the type of bean/powder you're using. Extraction is at 93C and may be tweaked a bit. Finally, steaming is at a higher temperature (130C) and makes an excellent job with the supplied jug, which has a temperature gauge built into the side to see when the milk's at the right temperature. Some advice:- fresh caffeinated beans - grind ... MoreWe were looking for a machine that allowed us to do the steps manually, rather than a "one press bean to cup" machine, and this fits our requirements perfectly. On our (emigration) container arriving from South Africa into the UK, I discovered that my trusty old Breville 860XL had somehow 'passed away'. As it was very, very old I decided it was no longer worth repairing.Much research into a new espresso machine took me to other brands, but I returned to the SAGE BE 875 from a price/performance POV and existing personal knowledge of the product. It took me just a few cups to have the grind size and amount tuned. I did not have to adjust the shot volume at all.The new hot water feature is awesome. The lip where the bean hopper is inserted will now prevent water spills from entering the grinder.Minor crits are that the filters need to be deeper to avoid minor grind mess, the steam/hot water knob is not as ergonomic as ... MoreOn our (emigration) container arriving from South Africa into the UK, I discovered that my trusty old Breville 860XL had somehow 'passed away'. Awesome coffee at a fair price.
Amazing machine. This machine gave me real opportunity to learn and make amazing coffee every time irrespective of what kind of beans I have. Highly configurable with loads of settings and many filters. This machine is for people wlov love to have perfect coffee every time. If someone is saying I have automatic coffee machine which means they simply don’t know coffee business there are plenty of YouTube videos take some time to learn life skills and you won’t regret it. I’m not sure that this machine is what people will expect. I had a more compact Krups machine which was almost as good and it was old. However it grinds your beans and makes a good cup of coffee but if you want some créma then you need to use the double wall insert. No matter how you set the grind or what coffee you buy the dual wall insert is essential. The pressure gauge is probably meaningless. The steam wand is excellent but it’s a bit slow to get going. The coffee dosage is set to lowest but it still over fills slightly. Far too much water ends up in the drip tray and it has to be emptied after every session..I probably would empty it anyway but it does get very full. When I bought it, there was an offer of free coffee or an online tutorial but I’ve not seen ... MoreI’m not sure that this machine is what people will expect. Some say it’s noisy and it is a bit but that’s not a problem. It needs a good wipe after each session and it’s worth 1 minute to do so, to leave your kitchen or butlers pantry tidy.I use Breakfast cups by ‘Jars’ of Turon from David Mellor and Coffee by Fidelia of Coleraine or Sainsbury’s Guatemala Espresso.I would buy this make of machine again without doubt.
