A fantastic espresso machine that looks beautiful (but watch out for the paint!)

My only issue is that it looks like it might be prone to paint chips. Upon receiving the device, I noticed it had a small paint chip next to the tamper lever. I contacted Sage within 24 hours of receiving my machine about the paint chip and they said cosmetic damage isn't covered under warranty.Overall, I'm delighted with the machine and would highly recommend buying one. Don't put it off like I did!

Broke within days

If the machine still worked, this review would have been very different. I am no barista but for the first few days I was able to make coffees which tasted much better than what you can end up paying nearly £4 for here in London. I am not sure that the automatic tamp function is completely perfect (doing it manually would result in a much cleaner puck surface) but makes life much easier and seems to do the job. However, after just a few days the machine broke - the water would not stop flowing through the portafilter resulting in diluted coffee spilling over my kitchen counter. Sage agreed to replace the machine - apparently this is a known issue with the batch - however from there the process has been arduous. The return label was sent via email (I don’t have access to a printer) accompanied by instructions to “find a suitably sized box with internal support” and to “ensure that everything is packaged individually to ensure no damage in transit”. Given that I have already recycled the original box, I am going to need to order packaging specifically for this. Not ideal for a machine that cost £600 and which only lasted for a few days.

Enjoying our new machine

Having experienced consistently brilliant coffee on a recent trip to Australia we decided to treat ourselves and upgrade from a fairly new pod machine. It’s taking a while to get to grips with the various settings in order to create coffee to our liking but overall we’re impressed. Our son had a similar Breville machine without the integrated tamper of the impress. It was messy and we felt we constantly wasted ground coffee. The impress tamper is definitely a massive plus for us. We wanted a machine that allowed us to control the brewing process rather than having a fully automatic machine and feel this is a great compromise. The frothing wand is fine but the steam does take a while to come through. Again practice is required to produce milk of the right temperature and texture but there are loads of videos on the internet. The machine looks great and seems to be well built, it has a fairly small footprint so doesn’t take up much space. The Sage knock box is also definitely worth purchasing as we found the compost caddy was getting dented with the force required to knock the grinds out of the filter. Overall a definite improvement on the pod machine and doesn’t take significantly longer to produce a cup of coffee. It’s great addition to the kitchen for a family of budding baristas!

Good cup of coffee but is it worth all the extra work?

I bought this Sage Barista machine a month ago based off of a friend's recommendation, and the thought of having this impressive machine and being able to make barista style coffee on a similar level to that of a high-end cafe was very enticing. And the result is that it can definitely do that, but not without the added hassle that you wouldn't get with a simpler capsule-type machine.Firstly, I've noticed that the tray beneath fills up with water so quickly, that after making 3 or 4 coffees, I need to empty the tray. I'm not sure why it leaks so much water, when I hardly use the hot water function. Most of the time, I grind the beans, then select the double espresso option and top up with cold milk. I'm not sure why it leaks so much water, when I hardly use the hot water function. Most of the time, I grind the beans, then select the double espresso option and top up with cold milk. It seems the water waste is quite prominent.Secondly, though the machine does look good sitting on the kitchen counter, it takes quite a bit of time and effort to maintain that look. When I grind a dose of coffee beans, some the ground coffee goes all around the portafilter and onto the tray, so it ends up wasting a lot of the coffee. When the hot water starts to filter through the coffee and into the mug, the coffee splatters everywhere, so once I've made my coffee, I need to quickly start cleaning the machine so that all the splatter doesn't dry up and make it a bigger cleaning job later. The steam wand is its own cleaning job, to the point that I now dread using it simply because of the effort it takes to clean it. I was told to clean the steam wand right away after use, which I have done, yet the milk stain left on wand is stubborn that it takes a good couple of minutes of scrubbing a hot steam wand to try and get it off. All in all, by the time the cleaning is done, I have not had the chance to enjoy a hot cup of coffee.Although the coffee does taste great, It takes a couple of tries to get that taste, and depending on the type of beans you get, you have to experiment to get the right dosing into the portafilter, so again, you end up wasting a lot of the coffee in the first few tries to get the right coffee taste. Unless you use one type of coffee beans and don't switch it up, a good chunk of the coffee goes to waste trying to get the right grind consistency.Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive machine and the coffee does taste great once you've experimented. But is it worth all the extra hassle that comes with it, especially considering the price of this machine? I'm not sure. Sometimes, I do miss my old capsule machine that just gave me a decent cup of coffee without all the additional work.

Another upgrade from the Sage collection and the new Barista Express Impress doesn’t disappoint. The new puck system makes everything easier and is less messy indeed. The overall design is lovely especially in the Black truffle option and I love they kept the main design from the previous Barista Express which I liked so much. The new puck system is looking slightly bulkier but it is functional so I guess it’s worth it. For those who love hand pressing their coffee I think I would stick to Barista Pro instead. Both machines would do an amazing job and are worth every penny. The espresso quality is outstanding and does not compare to any automatic coffee machines out in the market that I know. I have given it a star because it looks good and makes noises when grinding coffee. However, that’s about as far as it goes. It’s impossible to reach the coffee Nirvana of 30 seconds or so extraction time as it varies enormously. This is with their own brand Beanz coffee.Don’t expect the extraction to look like “pouring honey” as in their promotional videos. It’s either run through and be done in 15 seconds or dribble drop by drop. This is with the dialling in process and moving the grinder one notch at a time to try and find the right grind size……Bonus for Sage as you get through a ton of their expensive coffee. The coffee is frequently cold. Luckily someone invented Americano so you can top up with a kettle to make it hot.It is essentially a two shot wonder. You can do a doubles shot, or, you can put in the single shot holder and grind your way through another bag of coffee to dial it in, then do the same to round trip back to double. You are stuck with one coffee at a time as there is no way to flip out your normal coffee for decaf (sacrilege I know…but my other half likes it.All in all, I am hugely disappointed by this purchase. My £15 cafetière was more versatile and produced better coffee. Finally, customer service. Good luck with that one if you want to raise anything online. You get redirected to an American area when you log in on the UK site. I signed up for the Beanz twice monthly delivery with Barista’s choice. Looks like he is a bit limited in that department as I have been sent the same thing twice. No response from customer services. Looks like UK and USA don’t exchange information. In all it’s £700 to look good in your kitchen and produce variable quality and variable temperature coffee.

Steam your milk. The steamer wand is not as powerful as the commercial units. Therefore it's steams milk as bit slower. This is a blessing as it's more forgiving when steaming the milk.Once your milk is ready, you can brew the coffee. Pop under your cup and within a few seconds you have your shot of coffee. Now pour in the milk and there you have an amazing tasting coffee. The Impress only has one heating element so you can only brew coffee or steam milk at one time. This isn't a problem once you get used to the machine this is not a problem. It may be an issue if you're making coffee for quite a few people. The unit itself heats up really quick ready to brew coffee or steam milk. There is a learning curve when adjusting the grind for the beans. I went through a full bag of beans on my first day.The machine grinds beans and has a lever on the side so once the beans are ground. Just press the lever and your ground coffee beans are tamped at the perfect pressure. The machine will show if it needs more or less ground beans. The machine will learn from the previous dose on how much to grind so once it learns the amount it remembers the setting even when the machine is switched off. Before buying this machine I was wondering if the novelty would wear off as it takes longer to make compared to instant coffee.Within a few days I learned to make a fresh cup of coffee (with steamed milk) in 3.5 mins.I highly recommend the Impress. There are more expensive models from Sage but I do feel I made the right choice. If I were to buy another machine in a few years I probably would get a more expensive model. The reason for this is that making a decent coffee is something I've learned and has refined my pallet. This is a great machine to get if it's your first "Bean to cup"The machine is just a bit to high to place on the kitchen worktop to slide under the wall cupboard.Once all the settings have been set it's very quick and easy to make a lovely cup of coffee.I highly recommend this machine. Before buying this machine I advise to get a milk thermometer and beans.

Pretty Good but?

This is a pretty good coffee machine and a step up from my previous one. What this means is that you need to learn how to grind coffee by selecting the correct grind point. This process cost us half a kilo of coffee, which was mostly wasted. The second learning curve is trying it get the milk foaming to be creamy and silky, without over heating. This was much harder, I got through a ltr of milk before get even close. A few months on and this machine is under control, the coffee is now spot on and the milk is not quite perfect, but we are getting some pretty good results. If you are looking to achieve coffee that is better than any of the big name coffee shops, then this machine will get you there with a little bit of patience and practise. A good tip is not to push ... MoreThis is a pretty good coffee machine and a step up from my previous one. A good tip is not to push the tamp handle down too fast n hard, as it will spray ground coffee everywhere, which is quite a waste. Go with slow n steady.
