A fantastic espresso machine that looks beautiful (but watch out for the paint!)

My only issue is that it looks like it might be prone to paint chips. Upon receiving the device, I noticed it had a small paint chip next to the tamper lever. I contacted Sage within 24 hours of receiving my machine about the paint chip and they said cosmetic damage isn't covered under warranty.Overall, I'm delighted with the machine and would highly recommend buying one. Don't put it off like I did!

I was concerned that I would have no idea where to start in producing that perfect coffee but following the guidelines in the instructions, the first cup of coffee tasted good so I was very intrigued as to what difference each of the 25 settings would make. I have so far played around a few times and the coffees seem to taste better each time! I love the tempering lever which guides you to getting it perfect. Only on my third attempt I reached the green light to say I had tempered correctly. I played around with the dosage of coffee until I reached my desired taste. I definitely recommend this machine to anyone who likes their coffee just so as it really allows you to change your coffee to make it perfect for you. The milk frothing took a bit more practice but again following the clear instructions, I was happy with my first attempt. I am excited to play around and aim to produce some coffee art and impress everyone! My only criticism of the machine is that if you leave the portafilter in place whilst you froth the milk, it can get in the way a bit so I just remember to take it out now so solve that problem! All in all, I would absolutely recommend this to any coffee lover as you really do notice the difference and It looks great in your kitchen.

The assisted tamp and automatic dose level indicator also makes the first part of the process incredibly easy with no margins for error, the portafilter has a satisfying feel to it and is easy to move between grinding cradle and portatfilter head. The machine heats up quickly and the whole process from start to finish takes a few less than a couple of minutes to deliver your espresso. The water tank holds sufficient water for more than a few cups, and the hot water outlet is very useful if you're in a hurry, but you can just as easily top up your coffee cup from the kettle if you wish to save refilling the tank. The steam wand works well making great tasting cappuccinos, flat white's and latte's, however we did need a few attempts to master this. The machine is compact enough to move and keep out of the way, yet has the feel of a high quality and robust product. Morning coffee is now a wonderful ritual, enjoyed from start to finish. If you are someone who appreciates a good quality coffee this product doesn't go far wrong. It also looks great in the kitchen!

Best looking thing in my kitchen and makes great coffee

The Barista Impress bean to cup coffee machine looks the part. It's a gorgeous piece of equipment in a very compact body and looks right at home on any kitchen counter.Setting up was a breeze, and takes next to no time to work out the dosing, tamping and pouring of the coffee. This is because it is mostly all automated, with helpful lights on the machine to guide you. You need to fit the portafilter yourself to pour the coffee after the auto dosing and tamping, but that just makes you feel even more like a barista when making coffee. This coffee machine makes the most delicious coffee ever. I use freshly roasted coffee beans which produces beautiful crema, better than my old Delonghi. I had to adjust the grind a little to suit my taste, and this is easily done using a dial on the side. The machine has a clever storage compartment for the different sizes of portafilter baskets, which is very handy and helps keep your kitchen space tidy. The frothing nozzle moves freely, so you can easily position it at the angle you need to get the best texture for your milk. The machine might look imposing, like it's something you'd expect to see being used in a cafe, but through this machine, Sage have made the art of making delicious coffee achievable to everyday people. Ten days in and I'm still impressed by the quality of coffee it makes, and I look forward to my coffee each morning with excitement. One thing to note is that the machine sounds louder than it actually is the first time it's turned on, which might be a bit of a shock. But after that initiation, subsequent runs produce minimal noise. If considering getting this, just do it. The Impress is an eye catching piece of equipment and also makes delicious coffee. It is easy to use, and did I say it looks great on a kitchen counter? I mean what else can you ask for in a coffee machine?I wouldn't change anything about this machine and looking forward to trying different combinations to make different coffees.

Consistently Inconsistent!

I was hoping for excellent coffee from this machine, but alas, its really a poor espresso machine.Firstly, the grinder. This machine is supposed to take the guesswork out of grinding and tamping, but the 'correct dose' level will still show a smiley face even when the dose varies by up to 3 grammes!! For a nominal 18g dose, this is a 15% variation, which I find unacceptable. Then the tamp, well, after the 1st tamp, the puck looks as if it's been nowhere near a tamper, so you ALWAYS need to tamp twice. The tamper will rarely give you a level tamp, I've experienced up to 3mm difference in the puck level from one side to the other. Then the extraction pressure, Sage tell you that the gauge should go to the 12 o'clock position, or beyond. The tamper will rarely give you a level tamp, I've experienced up to 3mm difference in the puck level from one side to the other. Then the extraction pressure, Sage tell you that the gauge should go to the 12 o'clock position, or beyond. When I reported that my machine only got to 11 o'clock, and didn't even register during pre-infusion, they told me the machine was working just fine. Then the extraction. I started using scales and a timer a while back to improve my barista skills, so am able to weigh my dose and understand just how much espresso I need to extract, and in what time. This Sage espresso machine has programmable extraction control, allegedly volumetric; it hasn't, its just a timer. So, with the dose variability and poor tamp already mentioned, it's basically impossible to get a consistent espresso.I've now reverted to using this machine totally manually in order to get a decent coffee out of it. That means I'm doing a manual distribution and tamp, weighing the dose, then manually controlling the pre-infusion time and extraction volume. All in all, for me, this machine is a gimmick and I wish I'd purchased a more 'hands-on' machine, as none of the 'assistive' features of this actually work properly.During my brief correspondence with Sage customer support, I was initially hopeful that they could or would actually help to sort some of these issues, but this quickly evaporated. So, buy one of these machines at your own risk, if anything goes wrong, even during the warranty period, you're on your own!!

Enjoying our new machine

Having experienced consistently brilliant coffee on a recent trip to Australia we decided to treat ourselves and upgrade from a fairly new pod machine. It’s taking a while to get to grips with the various settings in order to create coffee to our liking but overall we’re impressed. We’re trying various coffees to find our favourite and found it was worth buying a cheap bag of beans in the first instance while we experimented. The frothing wand is fine but the steam does take a while to come through. Again practice is required to produce milk of the right temperature and texture but there are loads of videos on the internet. The machine looks great and seems to be well built, it has a fairly small footprint so doesn’t take up much space. The Sage knock box is also definitely worth purchasing as we found the compost caddy was getting dented with the force required to knock the grinds out of the filter. Overall a definite improvement on the pod machine and doesn’t take significantly longer to produce a cup of coffee. It’s great addition to the kitchen for a family of budding baristas!

Good cup of coffee but is it worth all the extra work?

I bought this Sage Barista machine a month ago based off of a friend's recommendation, and the thought of having this impressive machine and being able to make barista style coffee on a similar level to that of a high-end cafe was very enticing. And the result is that it can definitely do that, but not without the added hassle that you wouldn't get with a simpler capsule-type machine.Firstly, I've noticed that the tray beneath fills up with water so quickly, that after making 3 or 4 coffees, I need to empty the tray. I'm not sure why it leaks so much water, when I hardly use the hot water function. Most of the time, I grind the beans, then select the double espresso option and top up with cold milk. I'm not sure why it leaks so much water, when I hardly use the hot water function. Most of the time, I grind the beans, then select the double espresso option and top up with cold milk. It seems the water waste is quite prominent.Secondly, though the machine does look good sitting on the kitchen counter, it takes quite a bit of time and effort to maintain that look. When I grind a dose of coffee beans, some the ground coffee goes all around the portafilter and onto the tray, so it ends up wasting a lot of the coffee. When the hot water starts to filter through the coffee and into the mug, the coffee splatters everywhere, so once I've made my coffee, I need to quickly start cleaning the machine so that all the splatter doesn't dry up and make it a bigger cleaning job later. The steam wand is its own cleaning job, to the point that I now dread using it simply because of the effort it takes to clean it. I was told to clean the steam wand right away after use, which I have done, yet the milk stain left on wand is stubborn that it takes a good couple of minutes of scrubbing a hot steam wand to try and get it off. All in all, by the time the cleaning is done, I have not had the chance to enjoy a hot cup of coffee.Although the coffee does taste great, It takes a couple of tries to get that taste, and depending on the type of beans you get, you have to experiment to get the right dosing into the portafilter, so again, you end up wasting a lot of the coffee in the first few tries to get the right coffee taste. Unless you use one type of coffee beans and don't switch it up, a good chunk of the coffee goes to waste trying to get the right grind consistency.Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive machine and the coffee does taste great once you've experimented. But is it worth all the extra hassle that comes with it, especially considering the price of this machine? I'm not sure. Sometimes, I do miss my old capsule machine that just gave me a decent cup of coffee without all the additional work.

Another upgrade from the Sage collection and the new Barista Express Impress doesn’t disappoint. The new puck system makes everything easier and is less messy indeed. The overall design is lovely especially in the Black truffle option and I love they kept the main design from the previous Barista Express which I liked so much. The new puck system is looking slightly bulkier but it is functional so I guess it’s worth it. For those who love hand pressing their coffee I think I would stick to Barista Pro instead. Both machines would do an amazing job and are worth every penny. The espresso quality is outstanding and does not compare to any automatic coffee machines out in the market that I know. This type of machine is for the people who love and enjoy the coffee ... MoreAnother upgrade from the Sage collection and the new Barista Express Impress doesn’t disappoint. This type of machine is for the people who love and enjoy the coffee making process and don’t mind to spend a little bit more time than you would normally do around the traditional automatic coffee machines. All our friends compliments the coffee we make.

Huge disappointment

I have given it a star because it looks good and makes noises when grinding coffee. However, that’s about as far as it goes. It’s impossible to reach the coffee Nirvana of 30 seconds or so extraction time as it varies enormously. This is with their own brand Beanz coffee.Don’t expect the extraction to look like “pouring honey” as in their promotional videos. It’s either run through and be done in 15 seconds or dribble drop by drop. This is with the dialling in process and moving the grinder one notch at a time to try and find the right grind size……Bonus for Sage as you get through a ton of their expensive coffee. The coffee is frequently cold. Luckily someone invented Americano so you can top up with a kettle to make it hot.It is essentially a two shot ... MoreI have given it a star because it looks good and makes noises when grinding coffee. However, that’s about as far as it goes. It’s impossible to reach the coffee Nirvana of 30 seconds or so extraction time as it varies enormously. Luckily someone invented Americano so you can top up with a kettle to make it hot.It is essentially a two shot wonder. You can do a doubles shot, or, you can put in the single shot holder and grind your way through another bag of coffee to dial it in, then do the same to round trip back to double. You are stuck with one coffee at a time as there is no way to flip out your normal coffee for decaf (sacrilege I know…but my other half likes it.All in all, I am hugely disappointed by this purchase. My £15 cafetière was more versatile and produced better coffee. Finally, customer service. Good luck with that one if you want to raise anything online. You get redirected to an American area when you log in on the UK site. I signed up for the Beanz twice monthly delivery with Barista’s choice. Looks like he is a bit limited in that department as I have been sent the same thing twice. No response from customer services. Looks like UK and USA don’t exchange information. In all it’s £700 to look good in your kitchen and produce variable quality and variable temperature coffee.

It's a game changer. I won't be going back to instant coffee.

I've always wanted to treat myself to a decent coffee machine. I've had cheaper ones in the past thinking that they're "all the same".I had my mind set to get the the Barista Express. As luck would have it I ended up with the Impress. The main difference is the Impress has more advanced press. It let's you know if you need to add more or remove some of the ground coffee. The machine is fantastic. Fresh beans are kept in the top hopper. Switch on the machine, press one button and you'll get fresh ground beans.Switch on the steamer. While that's warming fill the jug with milk.Within a few seconds the steam is ready. Steam your milk. The steamer wand is not as powerful as the commercial units. Therefore it's steams milk as bit slower. Steam your milk. The steamer wand is not as powerful as the commercial units. Therefore it's steams milk as bit slower. This is a blessing as it's more forgiving when steaming the milk.Once your milk is ready, you can brew the coffee. Pop under your cup and within a few seconds you have your shot of coffee. Now pour in the milk and there you have an amazing tasting coffee. The Impress only has one heating element so you can only brew coffee or steam milk at one time. This isn't a problem once you get used to the machine this is not a problem. It may be an issue if you're making coffee for quite a few people. The unit itself heats up really quick ready to brew coffee or steam milk. There is a learning curve when adjusting the grind for the beans. I went through a full bag of beans on my first day.The machine grinds beans and has a lever on the side so once the beans are ground. Just press the lever and your ground coffee beans are tamped at the perfect pressure. The machine will show if it needs more or less ground beans. The machine will learn from the previous dose on how much to grind so once it learns the amount it remembers the setting even when the machine is switched off. Before buying this machine I was wondering if the novelty would wear off as it takes longer to make compared to instant coffee.Within a few days I learned to make a fresh cup of coffee (with steamed milk) in 3.5 mins.I highly recommend the Impress. There are more expensive models from Sage but I do feel I made the right choice. If I were to buy another machine in a few years I probably would get a more expensive model. The reason for this is that making a decent coffee is something I've learned and has refined my pallet. This is a great machine to get if it's your first "Bean to cup"The machine is just a bit to high to place on the kitchen worktop to slide under the wall cupboard.Once all the settings have been set it's very quick and easy to make a lovely cup of coffee.I highly recommend this machine. Before buying this machine I advise to get a milk thermometer and beans.
