Breville Barista Express Impress Review

This is my second Breville espresso machine. I originally had Breville Bambino Plus Espresso machine and really liked it. It is a standalone machine, ie did not have a built in grinder and tamp system, so I had to also purchase a coffee grinder. The Breville Barista Express Impress is a very easy machine to use and includes everything. It makes great espresso and the built in grinder is a great feature and very convenient with an added built in tamping system. It does take a few attempts at selecting the correct grind setting and puck dose, but the suggested setting, give or take a few turns one way or another, is generally spot on. One pull of the tamping handle and if the machine determines there isn’t enough grinds, it will signal you to add more, ie prompt you ... MoreThis is my second Breville espresso machine. One pull of the tamping handle and if the machine determines there isn’t enough grinds, it will signal you to add more, ie prompt you to grind again. I love this feature as it takes a lot of the guess work out of the equation. Again, it takes a few attempts. I am still playing with the grind and tamped grinds to reach the “espresso” setting. Still not seeing the pressure gage reach the “espresso” setting either. On another note, I have noticed a lot of water in the drip tray (more than I feel should be based on videos). The water is clean so it isn’t from the coffee filter dripping. I have to contact support still to find out why and will update this review at that time.Review continuation,After having the Breville Barista Express Impress for a few months now, I’m very comfortable and find it even easier to use than when I first purchased it. It’s quick to grind and the automatic tamping is fantastic. I am still fiddling with the espresso pressure but it’s just a matter of trial and error. So far I have not made a bad tasting coffee at all! I find the steamer wand takes a little longer to heat up than previous milk frother steam wands, but it’s a matter of maybe 20-30 seconds vs 10-15 seconds. I wish the water reservoir was larger/held more water as I find I only get about 5-6 cups of espresso and then have to refill the tank. After watching some instructional videos, I also run a single cup through with no coffee to keep the machine clean so the overflow water tray also fills up quickly. Otherwise, I love this machine.

With a press of a button, it automatically grinds the beans and fills the portafilter with the correct amount of coffee. Next by pressing down on the lever, you can then easily tamp the coffee with the correct pressure (with a light indicator showing you if it's enough coffee...things couldn't get any easier! If there were not enough ground coffee, you just have to press the "dose" button one more time and it automatically fills the portafilter correctly and remembers the dosage for next time. I do have a couple minor complaints. The footprint of the appliance is quite big, so it takes up a lot of precious kitchen counter space. Also, because the appliance is quite heavy, I wish the water refilling tank would be on the side of the machine, therefore making it easier to refill the tank. But because it's in the back, it makes things a bit more challenging, but these are just minor complaints. Overall, the machine feels premium, good quality materials, making the appliance feel very high end. Because it's so simple to use, it's definitely two thumbs up!

Still working out the kinks of the machine as I’ve only had it a week and am loving every bit of it.It’s is very up to date with the latest commercial technology such as the built in tamper and automatic tamping for the Oracle, I love this cause it makes zero mess is easy to use (even for beginners). The colour is a major plus and this machine is also extremely quiet compared to my previous model the Barista Pro.This machine still lets me put my creative manual coffee skills to work without the machine doing everything.Highly recommended, takes a bit longer to heat up that the Barista Pro, but only by about 30 seconds. Worth the money if you ask me, or even the Oracle if you’re new to the coffee world and a little nervous to try something like this, however the Barista Express Impress is great to practice and apply your skills at home if your a new Barista or in Training.

I passed my three and half-year-old SMEG and Sunbeam to my Nephew in perfect working condition. I've saved half my coffee beans for my Nephew. The Breville is quicker, makes better coffee, and is easier to clean, the steaming wand is purged straight into the cleaning tray, and you have a helpful pressure gauge and intelligent dosing.I wasted about seven cups of coffee getting my grind size right; I set the inner coffee grinder to four and the outside thumb wheel to six.Again when I bought my Aldi medium coffee beans, I wasted a few cups; and with them, it was much easier to get my pressure reading right, but I then had to achieve my eight-second preinfusion and twenty-five to thirty-second shot times. The Aldi coffee beans are quite good, and you get the impression that they are only a couple of weeks old, just right for brewing. Cheap as chips! So far, I'm really pleased with my Breville. I tried with the one-shot filter basket and a smaller 280-millilitre coffee cup, but I prefer using the two-shot basket and a 12 oz, 340-millilitre coffee mug; the coffee tastes better.I have only made flat whites. I find the coffee temperature consistently Ok.

The built-in conical burr grinder ensures that I can always use freshly ground coffee beans, resulting in a rich and aromatic shot of espresso. The customizable settings allow me to fine-tune the grind size, shot volume, and extraction time, so I can create the perfect brew tailored to my taste. One of the standout features of the Barista Express Impress is the precise temperature control. It consistently delivers the right water temperature for brewing, which is vital for extracting the full flavor from the coffee beans. The steam wand is another delight; it froths milk beautifully, enabling me to craft lattes and cappuccinos that rival those from a high-end coffee shop.Maintenance is surprisingly easy, thanks to the machine's removable drip tray, water tank, and drip spout. Cleaning is a breeze, and the machine alerts you when it's time for a thorough descaling.I also appreciate the fact that it comes with a comprehensive manual and plenty of online resources, which have helped me master the art of espresso making.Seven months in, and my Barista Express Impress Espresso Machine is still performing flawlessly. Good cup of coffee but is it worth all the extra work?

I bought this Sage Barista machine a month ago based off of a friend's recommendation, and the thought of having this impressive machine and being able to make barista style coffee on a similar level to that of a high-end cafe was very enticing. And the result is that it can definitely do that, but not without the added hassle that you wouldn't get with a simpler capsule-type machine.Firstly, I've noticed that the tray beneath fills up with water so quickly, that after making 3 or 4 coffees, I need to empty the tray. I'm not sure why it leaks so much water, when I hardly use the hot water function. Most of the time, I grind the beans, then select the double espresso option and top up with cold milk. I'm not sure why it leaks so much water, when I hardly use the hot water function. Most of the time, I grind the beans, then select the double espresso option and top up with cold milk. It seems the water waste is quite prominent.Secondly, though the machine does look good sitting on the kitchen counter, it takes quite a bit of time and effort to maintain that look. When I grind a dose of coffee beans, some the ground coffee goes all around the portafilter and onto the tray, so it ends up wasting a lot of the coffee. When the hot water starts to filter through the coffee and into the mug, the coffee splatters everywhere, so once I've made my coffee, I need to quickly start cleaning the machine so that all the splatter doesn't dry up and make it a bigger cleaning job later. The steam wand is its own cleaning job, to the point that I now dread using it simply because of the effort it takes to clean it. I was told to clean the steam wand right away after use, which I have done, yet the milk stain left on wand is stubborn that it takes a good couple of minutes of scrubbing a hot steam wand to try and get it off. All in all, by the time the cleaning is done, I have not had the chance to enjoy a hot cup of coffee.Although the coffee does taste great, It takes a couple of tries to get that taste, and depending on the type of beans you get, you have to experiment to get the right dosing into the portafilter, so again, you end up wasting a lot of the coffee in the first few tries to get the right coffee taste. Unless you use one type of coffee beans and don't switch it up, a good chunk of the coffee goes to waste trying to get the right grind consistency.Don't get me wrong, it's an impressive machine and the coffee does taste great once you've experimented. But is it worth all the extra hassle that comes with it, especially considering the price of this machine? I'm not sure. Sometimes, I do miss my old capsule machine that just gave me a decent cup of coffee without all the additional work.

Great entry point into the espresso making world
3 January 2023

This is my first espresso machine and it is a great entry point. One thing I learned it that there is quite a science to espresso if you want optimal results. The machine makes a difference but so does things like grind size, tamping, dose amount, and extraction time. There is more to it than taking it out of the box, putting in coffee, and pressing a button. I learned this in researching which machine to get so I knew what I was getting into. The Impress is a semi-automated machine that once it is 'dialed-in' only takes a few minutes to get great results each time. It does take some practice, and lots of youtube videos, if you want to get a perfect shot...or as close to it as possible. The dosing and 'assisted' tamping takes one of the variables out of the espresso ... MoreThis is my first espresso machine and it is a great entry point. The dosing and 'assisted' tamping takes one of the variables out of the espresso making process which makes things a little easier for newbies. I still haven't mastered steaming of milk but even with my mistakes my espresso drinks still taste great. It seems to be fairly easy to keep clean which is nice and there is not a lot of maintenance. It is a nice looking machine and it seems to be well built with a lot of mental and not a lot of plastic. So it is a pretty hefty price tag but seems to hit a nice spot of price/quality/results considering machines can go from about $100 to thousands of dollars.I would recommend this machine but I would advise watching videos on dialing it in as well as how to steam milk. There isn't a ton out there on the Impress since it is pretty new but if you look for the 'Breville Barista Express' videos as well it is basically the same machine outside of the assisted 'tamping'.Happy Espresso making!

Home or work, the Brevell Barista Express Impress gives value for your beans.
3 July 2023

The Barista Express Impress by Brevell is one of the best value for money espresso machines on the market today. If you've already come to the realisation that grinding your own coffee beans and making fresh coffee insures the premium flavour you know and enjoy from your favourite cafes, then you will already be looking for a machine that has an all in one arrangement of grinder, espresso and steamer.Firstly, I believe the machine is just the right size, not too big and not too small. I also own the Brevell Bambino at a different location and it is one of the fastest machines on the market, as the steamer will heat up in about three seconds flat after the boiler is at temperature which is usually only about 15 seconds. I also own the Brevell Bambino at a different location and it is one of the fastest machines on the market, as the steamer will heat up in about three seconds flat after the boiler is at temperature which is usually only about 15 seconds. This heat up speed is unheard of in other models. My only complaint about the Brevell Bambino is it's lightweight and you need to hold it down when locking on the brew head. Nevertheless, the bambino makes a brilliant cup of coffee real quick. The Barista Express Impress is a massive upgrade as it will grind your coffee beans with complete adjustment and the Auto Dosing and Tamper is absolutely brilliant. Only have to set it once and it will learn the exact dosage for the next time. It does this for either single or double shot. The Tamper handle on the side produces an exact 10 kg tap against the freshly ground coffee beans and it also delivers a 7 twist at the end to give a perfect polished top to the coffee puck. Another great feature is the tent the handle will return to the star position on its own. The DeLonghi equivalent to this machine will not polish the coffee puck or automatically return, you have to manually lift it up and lift the handle out the way each time.Fully programmable timers for one cup or two. The steamer will boil up to temperature in about 12 seconds and ergonomically everything feels quite nice. The finish over the entire product is of great quality, easy to clean and the water reservoir at the back can easily be topped up on the go or you can remove it quickly with the easy lock carry handle.Great for home or work use or that neat little Airbnb setup you have.

Quick process for fresh espressos
21 March 2023

This espresso machine is very light, and easy to assemble. The app video tutorial provided makes setting it up a breeze and leaves little room for doubt in the assembled product. The machine itself looks sleek and compact. Everything is there to get from beans to a cup of espresso. Cleaning is very simple as well, often only needing to empty and wash the portafilter and wipe down the steam wand. The only issue I have with the operation of the machine itself is that the water tank is at the back of the product, which makes it cumbersome to refill the water, especially in a tighter kitchen.I don't consider myself someone who needs their coffee everyday. There is coffee at work, and I often do enjoy a cup with sugar and cream in the morning. However, this espresso machine makes espresso that are always a delight. The coffee grinder only needs 1 button to operate, and sensors in the tamping lever ensures that there is always the correct amount of grounds in the portafilter, leaving out any guesswork. There is the option to manually set the amount of grounds too, for those who are more savvy with their coffee. The easy to use steam wand makes milk significantly better than cream. Once I got the grind level correct, the machine makes consistently good espresso that I enjoy every morning. It is faster than going to a local coffee shop and makes better espresso! I would prefer for it to come with the mini waste basket.
