Five proven hacks for getting truly great coffee
13 July 2022

I've owned this machine for three years now and I've learned that there are five additional steps you need to take if you want really good coffee. First: brush the filter basket clean after each espresso. A toothbrush is great for this (I actually have an old Braun Oral-B electric toothbrush that I keep alive solely for this role). You have to pop the basket out of the porto and brush both the inside and outside surface of the basket (I keep an extra teaspoon handy, to lever out the basket). If you don't do this, the basket perforations clog with old grounds, and the draw will extend too long. Second: rinse and brush the water-outlet sieve that is located in the underside of the upper porto bracket on the machine. I run a single shot of hot water through the sieve ... MoreI've owned this machine for three years now and I've learned that there are five additional steps you need to take if you want really good coffee. I run a single shot of hot water through the sieve and clean the perforations with the aforementioned electric toothbrush. Third: pre-heat the porto. This machine reaches running temperature incredibly quickly (friends with a machine by a fancy Italian brand need to wait two minutes for the machine to heat up). This is great, of course, but it means the porto and sieve might be so cool that they rob your water of heat energy when you run your shot. So, before the first shot, and after cleaning the basket and the top sieve (see above), I insert the porto and run a shot of hot water through it to bring it up to temperature. Fourth: if you use the double-shot basket as standard, as I do, then when you use the grinder, you might find it less messy to firstly grind a single-shot amount of beans, and then compact the grinds into the basket (it’s best to use a tamp that is slightly smaller than the supplied tamp), before then grinding another single shot and compacting a second time using the supplied tamp. Without this intermediate compacting, the pile of grinds tends to overflow the basket, which is not only messy but also a waste. I do not use the plastic porto holder when grinding: it is not properly centred and it leads to more waste and mess. I just tap the activator button with the porto's foremost tab, and then lower the porto to sit directly under the grinder outlet, where I can see it and position it correctly. Fifth - and this is the step that has most improved my experience of this machine, although it's also the most bothersome - figure out a way of improving the leverage on the steam/hot water knob. I found it just too tight and unergonomic, especially considering its role as an actuator for scalding hot steam. I ended up drilling two tiny holes through the solid plastic grip and screwing on a wooden lever, which I created by cutting off the handle of a kitchen spoon. It was a lot of effort but it makes it infinitely easier to turn the steam on and off. I used a fine drill bit to make the holes in the plastic knob, and also a Dremel grinder to shape the wooden handle to fit the contours of the plastic knob, and a pair of metal fasteners (nut and bolt) to firmly attach the two. I attach a couple of photos - which, I now realise, make the wooden lever appear totally phallic but that is really not intentional.

Home barista dream come true.

Yes - this machine is the perfect balance of manual and automation for the home barista. You get to pick your grind coarseness, tamping pressure, pretty much everything. The best part: it's all a breeze. As an older millennial I do enjoy my morning avo on toast with a beautiful coffee. I might actually finally afford to buy a house as this machine now eliminates the need for those overpriced almond cappuccinos and avolattes. You can do all at home, without waiting on a queue, without dumping coffee cups into the environment, and just cuddling with your cat next by the fire in a cold winter's day. ;)The pump is spot on. I'm quite picky on pressure and when you find the balance for your coffee beans type, you're set! -- coffee purrfection right there. The steamer wand does give you good, hot steam and not watery stuff as other machines, meaning that you can froth that milk exactly how you like it and/or perfect your technique over time as it is very consistent.Impress your guests, girlfriend, boyfriend, or anyone with an amazing cup of coffee, right at home. The build is great, durable and no cheap-O parts. The magnetic hold on the tamper and on the dipping tray shows the level of craftsmanship that went into this machine.Having everything to fit in such a small footprint is great. I have a small kitchen and the machine doesn't take any valuable space from us. I used to grind coffee beans by hand with a manual grinder and it took quite a while, plus setting the grind coarseness was a bit of a pain. Not with this machine. The portafilter is also of great quality. I had other machines from other brands with a light, lower quality one that would simply not allow for good results. It is important that it's made well as the shape, materials and overall build will yield different results. You can use a knockbox without fearing of breaking it (I've done it in the past). The portafilter will also remain warm, ready for your next cup.It could hold more water, it could have the option to be plumbed in, but at this price point it is an insanely strong contender, if not the best one of its level. Great quality at a great price. I've seen some people with this one for more than 4 years, without any problems. So if you're thinking about it, don't think twice. If you like coffee, it's an investment with a very short payback period when compared to spending $5 per coffee.

I called Breville and I have to say the service rep was so patient and very helpful. I was so mad and he could tell. We spent almost 1 hour on the phone, I slowed a split screen so he could see what I was doing and I was doing it. He told me to also descale the machine and not wait for the solid light to come on. He watched me how I was making coffee and suggested to adjust the settings after cleaning the machine. Even sent me a bag of organic coffee beans because I waisted many on making cup after cup to figure out the problem. Basically he said to use the double wall filter to take out the guessing. After we were done talking I descaled the machine and the steam/hot water and cleaned the shower head. That was last week and ever since the machine would sporadically leak in the back. It looks like when I am pulling s shot of espresso some water comes through but some backwashes and ends up leaking in the bak as if I was cleaning it with the cleaning disc. It has happened two times so far in less than a week. I took a video and am calling them back tomorrow. I'm very disappointed. I take a very good care of my electric appliances so know this issue is not caused by poor maintenance. Customer service gets 5 stars, the machine itself only 2 as I am going to see what the outcome after tomorrow's call will be and most importantly I should not be dealing with issues like this after one month of use.

The Breville Barista Express is

The Breville Barista Express is a beautiful machine, inside and out. And like any amazing machine, it's a bit complicated. So, it will take a while to understand its quirks and nuances, like grind fineness, tamping pressure, and shot volume. I've made about 2 dozen cups to get up the learning curve, and I've nearly dialed it in. The machine itself is solid and nearly professional grade. The burr grinder works well and has a macro and micro adjustment to dial in the grind fineness. You'll figure this out through the pressure gauge, and that feels like driving a sports car. You'll start by using the automatic settings then graduate to programming the parameters to zero in on the right pressure, flow duration, volume, and taste. The drip tray works well, and is easy to remove and clean, although it's plastic, so be gentle. Water capacity is adequate, and it's easy to remove the tank and refill at the sink. Again, plastic, but engineered plastic. The portafilter and head are heavy duty stainless. If the building collapses in an earthquake, they'd find the portafilter and be able to reuse it. And the puck is dry to expel; all really good. It's an awesome residential expresso machine! Savor the small things.

Very Good Coffee. After much trail and error.

Recently purchased the Breville 'Barista Express'. Finally (after about 2 weeks) managed to get a very nice coffee produced.I have had Breville coffee machines for many years, previously I had a number of 'Dual Boiler' models, but his time around I did not want to pay that much and also wanted an integrated grinder.'Dailing-in' the machine takes some time and a lot of patience. The best help I found in this process is on-line from other users or experienced baristas who have gone to the effort to post detailed processes to getting the setup right. Although even then they have a number of different opinions and approaches. The information provided by Breville with the product is not much use.I needed to adjust the internal grinder burr setting to get a good result.I have booked the Breville offered on-line demo but have not actually done it yet (first available time-slot was 2 weeks after booking), perhaps this will provide more useful information.Previously I have opted for a separate grinder as I was concerned that if the grinder broke down it could mean replacing the entire machine. But my previous Breville grinder outlasted 3 'Dual-Boiler' machines, so this time I was willing to chance the integrated grinder assuming it was similar or better technology. So far the grinder has been great although the 'Grind Amount' is less selectable than the external grinder. So far I have only used the same style of beans, it will be interesting to see how much adjustment may be necessary with different beans and/or roast levels.

Very confusing machine

Bought it with Black Friday's deal but regretted to buy from JB, should have bought it from goodguy who might give me free extra warranty or even lower pricing. Anyways, I suspect Breville has modified the pressure on the newer batches of this machine, the pressure will never reach to the maximum (14-15 bar), it will only reach 9 bar (11 o'clock position) or slightly higher. I realised this problem when I ran a shot with the cleaning disk as per the Brevillesupport youtube channel to test the pressure, however, instead of shooting to the maximum pressure as shown on the video, my pressure gauge only reached 11'olock. I thought I got a faulty machine at first, I went back to JB to do an exchange. I thought I got a faulty machine at first, I went back to JB to do an exchange. I did another pressure test on the new machine, same thing happened and this time the pressure is even lower than the 1st machine. I gave up and thought of just keeping the machine because 9 bar is a so-called perfect pressure for extraction. However, when I tried to make my first coffee with my 2nd machine, I realised there's a missing accessory - the dosing funnel. It's frustrating that the identical models have 2 different packagings! The one with the missing dosing funnel must be an older batch.. So I got my 3rd machine and did the pressure testing again, undoubtedly it still didn't reach to the maximum bar, but it performed better than the 2nd machine. But still value for money cos it's only 500+

my FAVORITE purchase of the last two years

I bought this product two years ago and still use it every day. This is the best price for an espresso machine with all the necessary parts included (grinder, espresso, steam wand). I worked as a barista for years, and I love that I can make all the coffee drinks I want right in my apartment. I use this machine for my daily morning coffee, afternoon tea lattes, and when I entertain guests. (And it’s saved me so much money on my monthly coffee bill!)I love that the milk wand is manual because it allows me to texture my milk just the way I like it. This machine pulls delicious shots and allows for a lot of customization in grind size or amount. The pressure gauge is very helpful in tweaking your settings to make sure you’re pulling great shots. The grinder has a sizable capacity and can store 2-3 weeks worth of beans. The included cleaning cycles are very thorough, and the indicator lights help keep me on a regular maintenance schedule.Breville’s included one-year warranty is also great. I had an electrical issue 9mo in, and Breville honored their warranty and fixed my machine at no cost. It’s been working perfectly ever since. I really value when a company stands by their product! If you’re a newbie or, like me, a barista who wants to have lattes at home, you can’t beat this. Cheaper models require you to buy grinders or milk wands separately (trust me, you’ll want them all together), and more expensive models add a lot of automation that isn’t worth the money. If you want a machine to consistently make awesome espresso drinks, this is it.
