A beautiful copy

This is a seriously beautiful copy.Along with Tolkien's gentle style of landscape art throughout, it also contains a bunch of other stuff;cards of the last fragmentary pages of the Book of Mazarbul, that the Fellowship found in Moriatwo two-colour maps of both Middle Earth and the Godor regionPLUS another card from when King Elessar (Aragorn) invites himself to The Shire to catch up with Sam.If you're considering buying this book I'm certain you already have a 'reading copy' of LOTR ... or two. This volume will sit happily on my Tolkien shelf in my study, and I know I'll be taking it down to wonder at the art, and it'll spur me on to grabbing one of my 'reading copies', and to fall into Middle Earth yet again.

A wonderful volume of LOTR.Pages are nicely printed with the revised text and all the appendices are thereThe lovely illustrations by Alan Lee just add to the experienceBut beware that this volume is HEAVY an not really suitable for reading casually while travelling. I also miss the large fold out maps of the original volumes. The main map is on the inside front cover but small and you will need a magnifying glass to see properly. But I supplement my reading with "The atlas of Tolkien's Middle Earth" by Karen Wynn Fonstad (also available on this site) to complete the journey.Recommended as a serious volume for all LOTR fans

This is a wonderful collector's item book for all ardent Tolkien fans. The pages are high-quality and glossy, and the print is nicely readable (not tiny, like some other editions). The illustrations by Alan Lee are absolutely gorgeous. Looks great on the bookshelf. It is very heavy though, so not the best for casual reading-more as a collector's item to look through every now and then.

Beautiful!
11 April 2023

Supplied shrink wrapped within a publisher's printed cardboard shipping package, this was truly gift quality. The book itself is beautifully presented and has the revised Second edition text plus illustrations and diagrams, maps & sketches by J R R Tolkien himself. Before, you'd have to refer to the History of Middle Earth books; now the appropriate maps and sketches appear near the relevant text. If you're going to limit yourself to only one copy of this literary classic, this would be a good one to get.

Book design worthy of Tolkien
27 September 2022

I was umming and ahhing about buying this with my family but all my doubts went out the door as soon as it arrived. This is the BEST looking book I own. The die cut slip case is just beautiful and solid. And the combo of fiery red and black and gold is just the perfect combination of colours for an outstanding book. The eye of Sauron on the front cover is so bold, and the gold gilding just makes it feel completely premium. The pages are great, and it is a solid way to read. The red wrap around the spine also protects the book. The quality of this is just outstanding, and I shall enjoy reading this for years to come. I also bought a similar green Hobbit version of the book too. This is the One Book that rules all other LOTR books! Highly recommended!

Perfect Christmas Gift
7 May 2021

This is a beautiful 60th edition book with all 3 LOTR books. I was looking all over for not only a hard cover but also illustrated editions of LOTR as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend who's a LOTR fan. Thankfully I found this one! It comes with a sturdy plastic sleeve to hold the book and has a letter written on the back describing the details of this edition. The illustrations even include the maps. The words are the right size font so it is easy to read and the pages are very sturdy paper. It's perfect!!!!! And you can't beat that price!!

Strider irritation.
29 March 2023

As good and as complex as Frank Herbert's Dune epic. Of course you should buy. Loses one incomprehensibly reasoned star because of Vigo Mortice whassname in the film version: Early Strider: (distinct Irish brogue) "Yer man must be more careful Mister Baggins" Endgame Aragorn: " (Eton Rugby squad dialect) "I say! You bow to noah-one". It's distressing to listen to it. Ruined the whole thing, Virgo! But the full written trilogy -- perfect.

The Time-Less Best Book Of The 20th Century
13 September 2019

The time-less classic and rated by many as the best book of the 20th Century. I believe that it will still be being read as long as we last on this version of the planet. It will not 'date'. The standard of English language used makes it a book that is ideal as a present to anyone of reading age. Best advice though is the read "The Hobbit" first as this gives an introduction world that Tolkien created when telling stories to his children. The characters are all unique in their own ways. The story is so compelling and Tolkien was able to write the separated plots in different blocks but kept you from putting the book down when one block was 'suspended' whilst the others caught up with their part of the saga. I could never understand why this book was under the Science Fiction category and the readers of The Times wrote in droves when it was missed off their list of the best books of the 20th Century. Tolkien never received the Nobel Prize for literature but he died in 1973 before the book really took off with the reading public.

Tolkiens Middle Earth brought to life!
8 August 2018

The fabulous BBC radio dramatisation (not the earlier US PBA version) in all its glory, including the notorious mistake on the chapter listing (The Voice of Sauron, which should be entitled The Voice of SARUMAN). This dramatisation was made at around the time that full dramatisations on radio emerged from the Foley studio into fully realised soundscapes, immersion the listener into the action. Some elements of the epic Tolkien work were translated better than others. The grand battles are not well conveyed, for example, but the full cast rendition of the dialog is utterly compelling and the casting inspired. Some of the same shortcuts were taken in this version as in the film trilogy. There is no Tom Bombadil for example, and fewer (or different) liberties taken with airlifting characters into different scenes or dialog into different characters mouths. For fans who heard this when originally broadcast, it is a treat to be able to re-visit whenever desired. For those new to the experience, I highly recommend you visit Middle Earth this way. Radio always has the best pictures!

Worth waiting for!
9 March 2023

This 2021 hard back edition was really worth waiting for. It feels even more special having Tolkien's own signature and artwork inside, plus the ring's Elvish inscription written in bold letters on the outside of the book. Even more importantly the font is easier to read unlike some of the other trilogy books out and the quality of the pages is excellent. It has the essence of Tolkien's magic and a book worth keeping forever.
