The Scythe Book
For the gardener, farmer, or homeowner, a good scythe is an efficient and enjoyable tool for cutting grasses and weeds and harvesting small grains. Author David Tresemer presents the results of years of research and practical experience so that the reader may learn to use and enjoy the scythe. In an age when most wonder how they can accomplish anything without the aid of electricity or petrol, The Scythe Book shows how a traditional hand tool can often outperform more modern technology. This new edition includes an addendum on the practical use of the scythe by Peter Vido. Beginning with his recollections from boyhood in Slovakia, Vido shares what he has learned from European mowers and scythe-makers during trips to countries where scythes are still routinely used. He also provides detailed guidance on fitting the scythe (blade and snath) to the individual, care and repair of the blade, principles of movement, and much fascinating lore.

David Tresemer is thorough when he researches his subject, such as the humble, ancient scythe, looking at all aspects of its development, use, and improvement. As he did with The Scythe Book, he did so with his other books Splitting Firewood and The Handcart Handbook, And his booklet Transplants in Soil Blocks. But he adds the important perspective and passion of WHY the use of such hands-on tools matters to the person engaged in the work, to the microcosm they dwell in, and the greater world it impacts. Take this quote, for example: I do not loan my scythe. I reap the benefits of a carefully tended edge, and am reminded of my responsibility by a dull edge. Each time I peen and whet the blade, I remake the tool as my own; in time it becomes a mirror of my attitude ... MoreDavid Tresemer is thorough when he researches his subject, such as the humble, ancient scythe, looking at all aspects of its development, use, and improvement. The authors prose is gently mesmerizing, like watching a harvester sweep back and forth progressing through a field to a satisfying conclusion. Authoring these wonderful books, and importing a variety of high quality garden tools, were the focus of By Hand and Foot Ltd., David Tresemers enterprise near Brattleboro, Vermont, where I was honored to briefly work as an intern in the early 1980s. Back then I read the book, but didnt have the money to buy my own copy. But when it came to mind recently I finally indulged the impulse. What a pleasure its been to read The Scythe Book again.
