I’ve owned the Thermocell MR450 for two years now. I keep thinking I’m doing something wrong as the mosquitoes love it! 15 feet of protection, more like a foot. Last night I was in fierce mosquito territory and I was being bitten like I had no protection at all. I put it on my right hip, I get bit on my left arm, head, legs etc. I kept checking to see if this Thermocell was on. Yup, but offers zero protection against mosquitoes… ZERO! For the price and the price of refills, I better not get a single bite let alone multiple. When I first tried it two years ago, it was late in the season, I thought we’ll maybe it was me. But now using it especially this season, forget about it. Offers little to no protection against mosquitoes! Bad Product!

Nothing is 100% effective against the bugs except staying completely inside, but these things definitely tip the balance back in your favour. It creates a pretty wide exclusion zone, especially at mealtimes or after the sun starts to go down. Solid, quiet, no odour, well worth the cost of the recharges! The unit comes with about a full day's worth of butane and repellent; think about getting a recharge pack at the same time. Well worth the cost.

We purchased this and I can now hike in the forest bite free! I am extremely allergic to bites and miserable. I hate using deet because it gets on my clothes and whatever I touch. I can stand outside and visit with neighbors and actually prevent mosquitoes for those closest to me. It seems to deter no see ums and deer flies too. The only thing I do not like is the belt clip does not stay tight enough to hook on various things. It might be better to have an additional Velcro option to attach to my backpack.

I’ve had this portable thermacell for 2 months. It has been a game changer for me. Not only does it repel mosquitos, but it has also effectively repelled biting flies, gnats and wasps. It is rated for mosquitos only. I have severe reactions to biting flies. Living on the marshy end of a lake, insects are extremely plentiful, especially the biting deer and horse flies. I am an attraction for them more so than other people. It had gotten to where I could hardly walk out my door without being attacked. I don’t do well with topical insect repellants and was at a loss for what to do except stay inside. A friend told me about Thermacell. I now own the portable unit as well as a patio unit. These mats do not last 4 hrs or even 3h. It works and it doesn’t. Very mixed result and for sure not 15feet coverage. More 4-5feet. But the biggest issue is the active ingredient: trans allethrin. It affects the respiratory system. So if you have asthma or are sensitive you might have a reaction. I had wheezing at night with mucus. I was looking for a product that is effective, minimal garbage and non toxic. None of these points are met.
I bought one of these and my friend did as well for our most recent backcountry trip. They literally worked for ten minutes and half hour and then they both just stopped working. Tried everything to troubleshoot but they just died. I will be returning mine. I also bought the one that goes on your butane and that works like a charm. I will just continue to use that one. It truly keeps the bugs away. Thank goodness I bought the backpackers pack one as well or we would have been eaten alive.
This worked for 2 weeks easily destroying flying mosquitoes and flies. Then it quit and would not light anymore. Registered the unit with Thermacell when purchased. Contacted them and they sent me a replacement within 5 days. Fuel was good in the old unit and there would only be a flash burn then nothing.
Purchased just before a camping trip to Enderby BC. The campground was nice but right by the river and mosquitoes were awful. It lit up OK with the butane cartridge and pads supplied with the unit but when they were used up, installed new ones from the refill package. Trying several times over a roughly two hour period, the unit wouldn't light. Could hear the gas, and there was a "whoosh" when the ignitor was pressed, but no heat (these units use heat generated from butane combustion to heat a pad containing pyrethroids to release insect repelling fumes).Even when it works, the slightest breeze carries the fumes from the pad away, leaving little protection. It might work in a still environment.Dad used to use those old green coils in the car (with all windows open) on those hot summer nights in southern Ontario when we went as a family to drive in movies and I recall much better results (of course the formulation may have been different back in the 60's). The coils these days contain an active ingredient that is basically the same as the pads used in the Thermacell and cost a lot less.Overall, quite a disappointment.
Works as advertised. We have two, and still may add a table-top to leave at camp.Instructions and guidance for battery are dismal. There's no indication on where the battery goes, in the instructions or on the unit.Registration process is cool, but it's a dud. Text reply stated it could not read the pic I sent, then did not recognize the product number when manually entered.
Usually don’t write these reviews but this product is amazing , put it to the test bear hunting in the dense bush this spring when off it was unbearable turn it on within seconds things cleared up . But ultimate test was …tree huggers stop reading here …..when bear was taken imagine mosquitoes around that monster I kid you not I put one Thermocell right beside the bear and it truly cleared them up . It’s insane .
