The Soft/FX series has a pattern of tiny lenslets designed specifically to put fine image elements, like wrinkles and skin blemishes, out of focus while leaving larger details such as the eyes, sharp. The Soft/FX filter will help keep the overall image clarity while softening unwanted details. The proportion of clear space to the diffused pattern on the glass determines the strength of the filter and enables the overall image quality and sharpness to be retained. The lighter densities are very subtle, producing no flare from highlights or reduction in contrast. The higher densities tend to be more noticeable in their effect while still providing a pleasing portrait. The higher the density, the greater effect of diffusion. The Ideal portrait filter. Softens unwanted details. Keeps eyes sharp and sparkling. High quality metal mounting ring.

It seems fine on close-ups. But, no where in the packaging did it warn me not to use it for general filming. I recorded footage for a movie in a park scene in sunlight. It introduced light artifacts on some of the footage where the sunlight reflected off the multi-lens non-uniformly. I was so angry. It ruined footage I'd taken for half a day. It made me look bad.

I loves this filter F/X 2. It gives a soft focus to my portraits without actually blurring the image. Very good for close up portraits.

I will be using this for filmmaking purposes and based on my first test it appears to give a nice film like look as opposed to video, which is what I was hoping for.
I thought the this filter would have done a better job at smoothing skin for portraits. If I was to buy it again, I would of went for F/X 3 or F/X 4. The photo that is shown in the product description if very misleading. If you really want to save money this effect can be done in photo editing software.
I use the Soft FX Filter to minimize aliasing when shooting video with my 5D. The diffusion effect softens small details yet leaves the overall picture sharp. It is also flattering to the subject's skin and I like the subtle bloom on strong highlights. Adds texture to otherwise clinically sharp HD footage...
One of the most reliable names in the filter business gives us several excellent choices for mitigating the "digital curse" of our images. I use this as one of my go-to filters for closeups.
This filter really gives the video a nice soft look much like film
Good quality throughout. To be expected from Adorama
