This is one of my true love fragrances. I know this is a very polarizing fragrance, but I don’t understand why there are so many haters of this perfume. I have been wearing Velvet Orchid since it came out. I remember smelling the fragrance insert in a Neiman Marcus catalog and CALLING to order it. Couldn’t order online! Now, that’s a LONG time ago!! LOL! I know this is a love it or hate it fragrance and of course it smells different on everybody, but this definitely works brilliantly with my body chemistry. I always get compliments when I wear it and I always feel sexy and confident. It’s a very sensual, soft, feminine fragrance for me. It’s a warm floral with notes of honey, rum, velvet orchid, vanilla, jasmine and MAYBE rose and Sandlewood??? I don’t know about the last two, but I feel like sometimes I get a slight whiff of those notes. Black Orchid is usually in a black bottle. This version in the gold bottle is a more intense version of the parfum. There’s a mysterious allure to this scent that envelopes you as soon as it hits your skin. I smell the bergamot and ylang-ylang right away, but as it settles the black plum, golden rum and patchouli notes come through with a seductive warmth. This isn’t a scent for the faint of heart or for those afraid of stealing them. And you’re gonna pay for that heart stopping privilege. The price for 1.7 oz is $165 and 3.4 oz is $210. One more thing, the longevity is amazing. I sprayed 2 pumps in the evening about 6 pm and could still smell it in the morning when I woke up. So it may be on the pricier side (yet it’s one of the cheaper Tom Ford fragrances), but it does last a long time. I don’t mind paying more for a fragrance that isn’t gone in 2 hours.

Once it settles, the floral notes start dancing, such as the Orchid, Gardenia and Ylang Ylang. After a few hours, I find it becomes a bit warmer and softer, maybe rounder. The spiciness dissipates and the Chocolate, Vanilla and Amber linger. I detect a very soft, barely there musk; not your regular “stinging” musk. I find projection/sillage and longevity to be outstanding! It lasts easily 8 to 9 hours on me and even then, I can still detect it as a skin scent. I’d say due to its polarizing effect and uniqueness, this is rather an evening and fall scent, but… I enjoy the opening, the midway through and how it settles so much that I wear it all year around. I simply use it more sparingly during the daytime and in summer.

I smelled all the popular perfumes out there, and I find myself not satisfied with anything the current female parfum market has to offer, literally every female perfume smells the same to me, until I stumbled upon TF farfum. The dry down reminds me of my childhood Chinese snack, a type of dried sweet salty plum (话梅), and also has a layer of fruity almost citrus scent as well, and still has the feminine floral scent but not boring, they mingle so well that I kept on smelling it throughout the day it’s almost addictive. Overall, if you are into traditional feminine scents then TF is not for you; if you are trying out new things and on the hunt for uniqueness, explore new scents, then TF is for you.

The Most Offensive Perfume Ever (In My Opinion)

The Good: I received this as a gift, so I didn't spend any money on it, although I never return gifts (the guilt is real) so it just sits there staring at me. The packaging looks luxurious so I couldn't complain too much and when sniffing it from the bottle it doesn't smell that bad even a bit intriguing... (but then you spray it and that quickly changes). When I tried to pass it on to my mom who is in her 50s and loves Tom Ford perfumes I was shocked that she told me she didn't like it either and also commented how it smells like an "extremely old woman" to her as well. Oy.The Bad/Honest: Scent is very subjective and opinionated, to me personally, this is one of the worst perfumes I have ever tried. Do NOT blindly purchase this because of looking at the keynotes description, it's not accurate in my opinion. Try this in a store, spray it directly onto your skin and see if it mixes well with your body chemistry throughout the entirety of the day. If you still like it by hour 24, by all means make the purchase and enjoy the lasting power because you get your bang for your buck with this one.
