I almost gave this mower 5 stars (and would definitely got with 4.5 if that was an option), but a few things keep it from a 5 star rating... First, every mower these days should come with a fuel shutoff valve. It would add all of a buck or two to the price and greatly increase reliability. Given the ethanol in so much of our gas these days, it's imperative to run the carb dry if you won't be running the engine again for a couple of weeks. Instructing the owner to drain the tank, rather than just providing a fuel shutoff valve, is silly. Adding one after the fact was a pain, but I managed to squeeze it in there. Further, for a premium product like this, it would be nice to have a blade stop instead of engine stop when you pause mowing (e.g., to pick up and toss a ... MoreI almost gave this mower 5 stars (and would definitely got with 4.5 if that was an option), but a few things keep it from a 5 star rating... Further, for a premium product like this, it would be nice to have a blade stop instead of engine stop when you pause mowing (e.g., to pick up and toss a rock out of the way). Restarting every time is inconvenient, to say the least. Someone who needs a 4WD mower is obviously going to be encountering more obstacles and such. I would have paid a bit more to have a blade stop (rather than just using a tie-wrap to defeat the safety "feature" anyway). Finally, the protection for belts and such within the blade housing seems great (we'll see how the plastic holds up), but it's lacking sufficient protection for the front wheel/pulley area. First time out mowing I managed to get a small rock caught in the pulley which stopped the front wheel drive from working until I took things apart and got the rock out of there. Hopefully a one-time thing, but it definitely exposed a weakness. That said, this mower is a beast and I have no regrets purchasing it. It starts easily, mows my hills easily, and looks like it will hold up over time. I love the rubber wheels (so many are plastic these days) and the "Personal Pace" self-propel drive works better than I expected.

Overall, this is a good mower. I bought this Toro mower a couple months ago and I've used it 4-5 times so far. The mower starts with the first pull and performs as expected. The all wheel drive is helpful and the personal pace ability is a great touch. My only exceptions are that it seems underpowered and tends to bog down easily if the deck is too low. Also, the mower does not come with a discharge chute. You have to request the chute separately when you register the mower. I did request one and it was sent promptly at no charge. But, the discharge chute really does not function. The only discharge hole is in the back of the mower where the clippings bag attaches. When you use the chute, no grass is actually discharged from it. Otherwise, a good mower.

This is the first time I bought a 4 wheel drive mower. I’ve been cutting this yard and both neighbors north and south for 30 yrs. as of this August. The personal pace has made my work 75% easier. The mower reacts to my pressure pushed on the handle. In the past I’ve had to stay up with the mowers pace. At 66 yrs. old this is a benefit on my time I stay up walking behind a mower every week. The assembly was easy, add the oil and gas and like the Toro warranty states it starts every time without priming. The traction of all 4 wheels is great especially through my moles pushing up and making my yard soft, it pulls it’s self through without hesitation in any way. Great first time experience and my first time buying a Toro product. Extremely satisfied with my purchase ... MoreThis is the first time I bought a 4 wheel drive mower. I've had this mower for a month now, after my 18 year old Honda's engine actually broke. Decided against another Honda, due to reliability problems I've read about newer Honda products. Also, I have a very steep hill on my yard, and needed AWD (instead of just having my rear wheels spinning all the time..). So, this mower has REALLY good traction. No wheelspin at all on the steep hill, and leaves less 'mulch edges' than the Honda did, and has a 1" wider blade, too. "Personal pace" didn't work well the first time using it, probably because the sliding handle was still a bit sticky. Once it loosened up, it works well enough, I guess, but having that big, bulky handle ABOVE the regular handle is a bit awkward, requiring me to hold my arms nearly horizontal, which ... MoreI've had this mower for a month now, after my 18 year old Honda's engine actually broke. "Personal pace" didn't work well the first time using it, probably because the sliding handle was still a bit sticky. Once it loosened up, it works well enough, I guess, but having that big, bulky handle ABOVE the regular handle is a bit awkward, requiring me to hold my arms nearly horizontal, which causes a bit of muscle strain by the time I'm finished with the yard. Frankly, I'd prefer a spring-loaded handle pivot like the Honda had than this clunky thing. Also, it need a not-insignificant amount of force applied just to engage the drive, unlike the Honda pivot handle, which required none. I've also noticed that the front and rear drives don't usually engage at the same time. Turning corners is more cumbersome than my old 2wd Honda was (no surprise there..), and the Toro also uses more fuel than the Honda did. Where the Toro really shines is on those super-steep parts of my lawn, and also on startup; starting the B&S motor took much less pull force than the Honda did, although it only seems to catch on the second pull. The automatic choke makes starting a breeze, but I'm hoping that it won't become problematic in later years. I haven't had any wheels fall off, and the fact I bought this mower from an actual Toro dealer might be the reason why I've had no build issues
Initially had problems with a poorly assembled unit such as fallen off circlip jammed in one of the front wheel cogs then a rear wheel fell off all within 10 mins of first use so had to spend time fixing this. The realized that front and rear drives were not in sync so had to adjust that so both started to drive simultaneously. Despite all that, once you get it right this machine performs incredibly well and drives up very steep hills and over rough uneven ground easily. The wide wheelbase makes it very stable along the sides of the hill and one never feels it is going to tip over. It also does a really nice finish on my wild grass and weed plot of quarter acre. Overall if you are mechanically minded and spend some time understanding the machine it is perfect for ... MoreInitially had problems with a poorly assembled unit such as fallen off circlip jammed in one of the front wheel cogs then a rear wheel fell off all within 10 mins of first use so had to spend time fixing this. Overall if you are mechanically minded and spend some time understanding the machine it is perfect for anyone with steep and hilly land. I was not sure any lawn mower would be able to cut my sloping plot but this does so with ease. You really need the additional Traction Assist Bar which is an optional extra when you are doing hills. The standard push bar is great on the flat but going uphill you push it drives up hill and of course it runs from you meaning there is less pressure on the push bar again so less drive. The Traction assist bar should be fitted as standard. Also make sure you request the optional side discharge chute as it helps in longer grass and weeds which otherwise clog up if mulching. Only rated it 3 for dependability because of initial problems and 4 for ease of use because the Assist Bar is needed for hills
Toro lawnmowers are tough machines. However this lawn mower is hard to push especially on hills. I had an earlier self paced all wheel drive Toro l loved. After5 years it still runs well, but I have tore up the underneath deck so much that debris from mowing on my large unruly yard keeps getting stuck in the belts and inside the wheels, causing the belts to come off and the teeth that turns the wheels to slip. I bought another one because you are fighting to push the lawnmower if the self propelled wheels stop working. Hence why I bought a new one. However I am kind of dissatisfied in the newer version. They other one had a handle you could squeeze that helped you get it up those steep hills. This one does not. They other one had a handle you could squeeze that helped you get it up those steep hills. This one does not. Also this model does not have an area for an optimal side shoot. Not having a side shoot makes it hard for the lawnmower to cut tall grass. It still has a hard time allowing you to pull it backward just like the older model and if you adjust the cable tension that controls the wheels too much it makes it very difficult to pull backwards. Let’s just say it is hard to get just right. To make a longer story short, I spent my first day using it to switch the handles from my old lawnmower to the new one, because I didn’t like it at all. Since I did that it is a lot easier to push. Later I will probably add a side discharge port myself so it has an easier time mowing my yard. My yard is awful to mow it takes usually 3 hours to push mow and I can’t use a riding lawnmower to mow my grass because there are very few level areas. All in all, it is a tough lawnmower, but it seems my yard is tougher.
The mower is almost flawless 4.5 stars. Only let down is a very unfriendly handle folding design. The catching system is abysmal though (1 star). The chute for clippings from the mower to catcher bag is very small and VERY prone to blocking up. Even trimming my Zoysia front lawn clogs it. The catcher bag is difficult to release and lift. Being fabric, the only handle is right at the front. This means unlocking it through the mower handle, dropping it, reaching under the handle and lifting it out. Do that 15 times a weekend and it gets old. Get rid of the mulch function opening up the entire rear for ejecting clippings (and adding a tip catcher handle) will make this a 5 star mower.
I've only had a chance to mow once, but so far it's lived up to the positive reviews I read before purchasing. I think all mowers struggle with tall, wet grass, so in that sense it's no exception to other mowers at its price point. If the grass is too thick or wet, the mower will slow down and choke. That's always a concern in the South where it's usually more wet than not and grass grows fast. Though I think this issue is somewhat unavoidable at times, regardless of mower. That said, I chose all-wheel drive because I've got a lot of hill to mow, and it's proven to be well worth it! The control is intuitive, and it's got a lot of gusto. Despite the mower's weight, it's pretty easy to maneuver and navigate in tight areas or under bushes. Despite the mower's weight, it's pretty easy to maneuver and navigate in tight areas or under bushes. I was able to mow a little less than a 1/2 acre of dry, medium length grass on just over a tank of gas while using the self-propelling feature. Not bad! For the money, it's probably a safe bet. Don't hesitate to get all-wheel drive if you're maintaining a hilly area. You'll likely be glad you did.
Purchased this with the hope it would be amazing at mulching but i was wrong. It looks amazing , the personal pace system was good and that's about where the positivity ends with the toro personal pace. Tassie isnt the driest place in in Australia but after 2 days of sun i thought id test it out. Grass wasnt that high at all and i knew my old victa that this toro replaced was cut through at ease.... Well the toro struggled ... struggled bad. Consistently stalling and unable to finish the job. Double checked under the mower to see if there was any grass build up but it was clean. I assumed the size of this thing and the power of the 165cc briggs n stratton the toro would be a beast , but it left me never wanting to touch a toro product again. We have a very hilly yard that has a tendency to wear out the self-propelled mechanisms in our push mowers. We've gone through three in the last 22 years. So this time we decided to go with an all-wheel drive version to see how it holds up. We've only mowed with it a couple of times so far but there are already a number of things we like better about this mower over our last Toro & Troy Bilt. First, it starts very easily, hardly any pull is required at all. Second, the bag comes off and goes on without having to fight a bunch of bars a cables – nicely engineered. Third, flipping the catch vs mulch gate is so much simpler than having to work a grass covered plug out of the shoot. And finally, the all wheel drive makes climbing the hills just a little easier. I traveled two hours to a Tractor Supply Company to get this specific Toro. Since it was already assembled for me I can't comment on any crating, shipping time or assembly issues. Free side shoot came within two weeks of registering with Toro as promised. Oh, and one other thing, the shoot design and the super fine clippings allow the bag to fill up well rather than getting all jammed up – so you don't find yourself stopping to empty a half-full bag. So far, so good.
