Easy to Set Up, Reliable Whole-House Coverage

This Deco AX3000 mesh Wi Fi system was easy to setup, and I’m happy to report that I have fast, reliable coverage throughout our two-story house, including some spots that were definitely not being well served by a single Wi Fi router. We have lots of devices in our home – work computers, personal computers, streaming TV devices, tablets, a Wi-Fi connected security system, a whole host of smart devices, etc. They’re all connected, and all getting fast, reliable connection. The Deco app is fairly easy to use to configure your network settings, choose device options, etc. We have a very-popular residential fiber-optic ISP, and I was able to completely replace the router I was renting from them with this system. The Deco app is fairly easy to use to configure your network settings, choose device options, etc. We have a very-popular residential fiber-optic ISP, and I was able to completely replace the router I was renting from them with this system. My Deco base station is connected directly to their terminal via Ethernet. If you have a cable internet ISP, you’ll need to keep your cable modem and connect that to the Deco via Ethernet (but won’t need a cable modem with built-in Wi-Fi router anymore). From a slightly more technical perspective, I’ll note that the three stations are all the same, and that the two ethernet ports on each support “auto-sensing.” That means a few things: First, no one device is pre-determined to be the base -- whichever one you set up first in the app takes on that role, and the others become satellites. Second, whichever ethernet port you connect to your ISP connection becomes the WAN port. Third, if you wanted to connect the Deco devices to one another by wire (and preserve all of the available wireless bandwidth for communication with your computers, phones, and other devices), you can do that using whichever ethernet port is available on each one. A few other technical notes just in case: Setup and configuration is primarily through the app. There is a web interface, but it seems like it doesn’t support all of the features. So, if you are someone who *needs* to configure your devices via desktop/laptop computer, this may not be right for you. Also, there’s no dedicated third band of wireless signal for station-to-station communication, so while I had no noticeable speed issues, systems with a dedicated band will be faster. This can be mitigated using the “ethernet backhaul” feature I described above, connecting the Deco devices by wire, but I found there’s plenty of speed and bandwidth to go around, even without using that option. Overall, I’m happy with this TP-Link Deco system. Easy to setup and use, reliable and fast coverage throughout our home.

Touting easy setup, great security, and longer range, the Deco AX3000 system is certainly a competitor to other Wi-Fi 6 systems. Included in the kit is everything needed to setup: 3 Deco X60 devices, power adapters for each, an ethernet cable to connect one of the X60s to your modem/gateway, and a small manual with a barcode. If you scan the barcode with your phone, it will direct you to your respective app store to download TP-Link's Deco app. I've found that setting up the Deco mesh system is easiest via the app. The app does require you to create an account but this also helps to remotely make changes to your Wi-Fi system as well. If you scan the barcode with your phone, it will direct you to your respective app store to download TP-Link's Deco app. I've found that setting up the Deco mesh system is easiest via the app. The app does require you to create an account but this also helps to remotely make changes to your Wi-Fi system as well. Additionally, each X60 is equipped with 2 ethernet ports. Although I work in IT, I found that setting up the mesh system was extremely easy and straightforward. After creating your TP-Link account, the TP-Link Deco app walks through the steps on how to connect and setup your new system. From start to finish, it took me less than 15 minutes to setup the system and start using it to stream content from places in my home where I didn't have signal before! Another thing I would like to note is that after connecting and setting up the first X60 device to your modem/gateway, the other two X60s automatically connected for me upon powering them up. Easy setup! The Deco system also includes multiple features for monitoring access, restricting content (blocking websites and mature content, social media, etc.), and protecting your network from viruses or cyber intruders. To enable the latter, TP-Link works with TrendMicro to provide this security at no cost to you although your data passes through TrendMicro's servers. While this is the trade off for the extra security features, it can be worth it for some for the extra peace of mind. You decide. Other features the system offers is QoS or application priority settings, monthly reports of devices connected and recommendations for security, and UPnP (available with a firmware update). What I loved about the Deco system was the signal range. Being a WiFi 6 Mesh system, this helped extend the range while future proofing. The system touts a 7000 sq. ft range and although I don't have a home with that much square footage, I did have issues with WiFi signal. With my house having several walls in between different areas of my home (I have a 3000 sq. ft home to give an idea), it was difficult to have good Wi-Fi signal in some areas of my home. I've purchased different Wi-Fi extenders and still couldn't achieve the results I was expecting (good signal and decent internet speed). With the Deco system, I not only have signal in areas of my home that were dead spots, but also can stream movies and play videos games without videos buffering or games lagging. While the Deco system does have great signal, I did notice that the speed wasn't as great as before. I was still comfortable with the speed given and while it is sufficient for my needs, it would be nicer to reach closer to the speeds I would originally have if using the internet provider's router. It is a trade off for me but as previously mentioned, I have signal with decent speed (+50mbps) in areas of my home that were dead spots before. Another downside is that it each Deco X60 device doesn't have a USB port and therefore you cannot connect an external storage device. While this isn't a huge downside, for those looking to connect external storage devices, the X60 devices do not support them. Lastly, wireless backhaul isn't supported and can only be accomplished by connecting an ethernet cable to the X60 for which you'd like a wired backhaul to. While not necessary for most people and works well without it, the wireless backhaul feature would've been a nice addition. Overall, I definitely recommend TP-Link's Deco system for those looking to upgrade from their internet providers router or from an older router. It is extremely easy to setup and offers great Wi-Fi range with good bandwidth and speed.

One of the features that I really like about this system is the inclusion of a lifetime subscription to TP-Link Homecare which includes antivirus protection for your whole network. Improved WiFi performance
5 December 2021

The Deco AX3000 Whole Home Mesh system comes with 3 units one of which plugs into your modem the other 2 are placed around your home to maximize your WiFi coverage. From a distance they look like big white candles. The LED indicators on the base can be fairly bright in the dark, especially if placed in your bedroom, fortunately in the advanced settings menu there is an option to switch off the LED at night and allows you to set the times when it is off. Set up is easy, you download the app to your phone or tablet and it walks you through the process. You will need to create an account with a password and you do need the app to control the devices and your network. The app is really useful and gives you lots of information about your WiFi network and the devices that are attached to it. The app also lets you fine tune your network for optimization such as streaming or to give certain devices priority to bandwidth. The system includes a guest network that you can turn on to provide temporary access to visitors. The security features include reports of attacks on your network, built in antivirus and firewall, device quarantine, and the ability to blacklist devices from your network. The system includes extensive parental controls so you can set bed times and daily time limits for your kid’s devices, and also the ability to track and block the websites they visit and apps that they use. The app comes with a built in speed test function that provides similar and comparable results to other 3rd party apps and websites. In terms of my own personal speed results, I see only marginal overall increases to internet upload and download speeds. What I do notice is that streaming seems to work better with significantly less buffering and zoom meetings work better with smoother and more stable video. This is likely due to the system better managing the devices and traffic on my network and improving signal strength throughout my home. Overall, the Deco AX 3000 system is beneficial if you have a lot of internet connected devices and especially if you live in a large multi-floor home.

Meh Mesh performance

I got this router "system" to replace an older router that died on me. My old router was located in the center of the house and provided good coverage throughout, but I saw that this mesh system was on sale and I thought that this would help extend coverage in the areas outside the home by locating the meshed APs on the outside walls near the patio and deck. Setting up the system once I downloaded the app was extremely easy, much easier than any router I have previously owned. In my opinion, the app is the best feature of they system and makes every aspect of the setup and management of the network much simpler than previous apps and browser interfaces I have used. Setting up the system once I downloaded the app was extremely easy, much easier than any router I have previously owned. In my opinion, the app is the best feature of they system and makes every aspect of the setup and management of the network much simpler than previous apps and browser interfaces I have used. Managing devices on the network and particularly things like WEP setup are much easier to handle through the app than my old router's interface. The individual devices are much smaller and much less obtrusive visually than my old router and easy to work into the room. Functionally, the "main" router connected to my modem is just as "fast" as my old router, however it doesn't have nearly the same transmission/reception range. I figured that this wouldn't be a big deal once the additional access points were online. While the additional points do extend the system's reach, there is quite a cost. When connected to one of the meshed APs instead of the main router, the connection speed was dramatically decreased. This was true even when I tested the speeds with the AP sitting right next to the router and using the same distance to the same laptop. This is very disappointing, and I have found that my old router delivered better speeds even at lower connection strength in certain areas in and around my home. Another issue that I have discovered is that when moving through my network environment my mobile devices do not always "roam" to the closest AP or rather, they will show that I have an excellent signal, but I cannot access the internet. This can be fixed by waiting a few minutes for the network to figure it out or by disabling and re-enabling the wifi on my device. Either option can be annoying. Overall, I have been a bit disappointed with this system. I have kept it in use as I got it on sale and the comparable router that I would replace it with is much more expensive at a time that I cannot really afford to spend the money. I am most disappointed with the performance of the APs, and I am hopeful that future system upgrades will improve the situation. If not I will probably replace when I am better able.

Simple, Fast, Reliable

I have a very high traffic home as far as internet usage, from laptops and phones, security cameras, game systems, smart lighting, and more. I need a router that can keep up with all of that without leaving me stranded without proper coverage. I have a significant number of devices that I want to just all work without fuss, and I am happy that this TP-Link Deco X60 mesh system is exactly what I need. Setting up a new router has historically been a long and irritating process that usually leaves me wishing I had left things alone. TP-Link absolutely solved that problem with this router. Setting up a new router has historically been a long and irritating process that usually leaves me wishing I had left things alone. TP-Link absolutely solved that problem with this router. Setup could not possibly have been easier or more seamless. Even over a week afterward I am still pleasantly surprised at how quick and simple it was to get it up and running exactly the way I wanted. The packaging includes a single network cable intended to hook up to your modem or access point, the 3 mesh units, and 3 power cables. It has a QR code for getting you to the correct app for using and setting it up. Once you are started the app walks you through everything step by step, from establishing an account or signing in, then selecting any one of the units to act as the primary router, getting hooked up, setting up your SSID and password, a few security questions and that’s it. The other two sync up automatically by simply plugging them into power after the initial one is setup. It was so fantastically easy. After all 3 were powered on and synced up which was a few minutes later, I performed a firmware update on the trio for another few minutes and then spent some time identifying all the devices in my home on the network. Not necessary, but not difficult either and makes it easier to setup QoS rules. It did a speed test coming back with just over 950Mbps which is to be expected on Google Fiber, and then I could proceed to setup priority rules for certain devices like my gaming rigs which is as simple as clicking a toggle in the app. The app is easy to understand and use for being able to check individual connection strength and speed per device, optimizing the network, running updates, and more. It loads very quickly and is a treat to use compared to others I have tried. Each unit has two Ethernet ports that are designed to smartly detect whether they are connected to LAN or WAN. I don’t have it setup yet, but I know this product supports Ethernet backhaul as well which I look forward to using when I can. In the case of the primary router, I have one port hooked up to my access point, and the other goes straight to one of a few unmanaged switches in my house. Every device on the hardwired network responds as they should although they all had to be restarted to request new IPs from the new router. Wi-Fi devices are all connecting properly as well and running very fast especially the few that have WiFi-6 support. My iPhone 13 Pro Max pulls over 500Mbps download and 300Mbps upload on the speed test app regularly now compared with less than 100 on my old router. It is quite a substantial improvement! All my devices have been running very smoothly since I got this equipment. Streaming is fast and smooth; gaming presents no notable lag and download speeds are phenomenal. Everything in my home is running better than ever and that is all I could have asked for with a new router at the heart of it all. I’ve only had one hiccup a few days after getting it when the router seemingly crashed and needed to be rebooted. However ever since then it has worked perfectly. I am very happy with it overall, it is doing what I wanted which is keep things fast and simple, and I recommend it to anyone looking for that same combination as you are sure to find a lot to love here.

App also includes security options for free…take advantage of that! Highly recommend this system.

So far so good!

I bought this to replace an old 2014 NightHawk R7000 in a 4500 sq ft house. With the R7000, I could only get 2.4 Ghz signal at the far reaches of the house, and after I got 12Gb fiber, I was having to reset R7000 Nighthawk about once a month. This lets me get 5.0 Ghz coverage throughout the house, and seems to handle my Fiber internet without any issues. It's only been one month, but it's worked smoothly so far. I was able to utilize port forwarding to setup a Minecraft server (Java and Bedrock). With an ethernet connection through a 1Gb switch, I'm getting speeds up ~945Mbps up/down with Ting fiber internet. While "6e" wireless would be nice, I think "6" is good enough for 99% of users, and this unit hits the real sweet spot for price, performance, and coverage.

Solid mesh router system for non-power users
3 December 2021

This router has been a pretty solid replacement for my old system so far, but it’s not designed for high end users. The setup was a breeze. It took less than a minute to download the app, and all three units were ready to go withing 10 min. I did plug them all in and set them up in the same room and then moved the other 2 units to their final location. If you have any issues with getting the other units to connect and have them placed all around your house, that may make a difference. Speeds are solid and the wifi maxes out my internet speed since I haven’t paid for the highest possible. I can consistently get 100Mbps on any device. If you have any issues with getting the other units to connect and have them placed all around your house, that may make a difference. Speeds are solid and the wifi maxes out my internet speed since I haven’t paid for the highest possible. I can consistently get 100Mbps on any device. I also have a home server so I tested the speed within the system and I got up to 500Mbps wirelessly to any computer, but averaged around 350. I got around 300Mbps to our better mobile devices as a top speed, but averaged closer to 250. I get just over a gig hardwired if I force the signal through the unit’s wired ports which shows that a higher internet speed into my house would be able to be distributed to they system and I may have been able to get higher if my home’s wiring were a little more extreme. My hardware for my devices is pretty good and fairly new. I’d say this is a pretty good representation of the actual speeds you’d get with the unit. I would only count on realistically getting 1-2 gigs hardwired if you have nicer wiring in your home, 300Mbps for a computer device and 200-250 for a mobile device. This is more than enough for most people, but the rated info on the box is extreme ideal situations where they have gotten the best and most compatible components to max out the speeds. But to put that in perspective, this unit should be more than enough for nearly anyone. For example, a bluray 4k movie would be between 40-80 GB. To convert that to megabits, that means that a 80 GB movie would be around 640,000 Megabits. At 300Mbps, your computer could download that movie in 35 to 40 minutes. And if you can download a 2.5-3 hour, 80 GB, 4k super high resolution movie in only 40 min, well you have more than enough speed to stream it at full HD. In fact, you probably have enough speed for 5 people to stream that movie on different devices at the same time. The signal is nice and strong all over my house. My place is only around 4,000 sqft and this is rated at 7,000, but that’s about right for my place. 7,000 is an optimistic number based on ideal circumstances and since people rarely pick where the internet company places their drop in the house, no one ever get the ideal setup. With this setup I get a good clear signal in my entire house with no dead spots where my old 5,000 sqft setup had issues even though it was rated more than my house size. As a general rule I usually suggest people go with a mesh system rated at least 50% bigger than their actual home. A plus I also found was this is a good enough signal that I can get pretty good speeds outdoors over my entire yard. I used to have to switch to mobile data to listen to music while mowing the lawn since the signal was week, but with this I’ll be able to stay on wifi the whole time (once the weather warms up). The app works well to get things set up and any novice will be able to get it going without any problems. It is app only controlled so anyone that gets into the details of the device knows what that means. For me I thought the app was a bit irritating on how they organize things and not super intuitive, but I’m sure once I’m used to it then it won’t bother me anymore. The big issue is that its a bit overly simplistic. If you’re not super techy you won’t care, but if you are looking to set up anything slightly more advanced like port forwarding or IP reservations, TP-Link made some choices that are just irritating. For example, you can’t filter or search devices at all, you just scroll through to find the device you want. If you fill this up to all 150 possible, it could take forever to find what you are looking for. The naming convention when a device adds to the network is also a bit short sighted. I used the same name and password as my old network so I didn’t have to reconfigure every internet enabled device in my house. When I went it to check the devices, the app had named half of them “Unknown”. It didn’t even number them. So as I’m trying to figure out which one is which, I have to click into the device information then check the MAC address and go back and match it up. But guess what? It doesn’t highlight which device you just went into so if you have the Mac address of the device you’re looking for you have to check Unknown devices one by one and count down the list to see which one you are on. And if a new unknown devices adds to the network in the meantime you’ll just have to start over since it isn’t clear which one the new one was. Finding our Nintendo Switch to put a time limit through the internet took 20 min. Also, if you wanted to identify all the devices that are hardwired instead of using wireless, there’s no way to search for it, and you have to click each device to look at its settings to see how its connected. Overall if you are looking to just get the internet to work in your house and log in they way you would at a Starbucks, this works no problem. If you’re trying to do something a bit fancier, it will probably work, but it may be a pain. If you’re looking to really control all the minor details possible, look somewhere else. As for the parental controls. These were obviously added because everyone is adding them now days and if they don’t have an option, they think they’ll lose out on a marketing advantage. The actual parental controls are just garbage. Blocking websites works if a site falls into a category that they have premade for you. If you try to add one specific website, it only works on like 25% of the devices I tried to limit. Even then, not all the time and almost never on Youtube. Also, the limits were weird and included in their preset controls sites that really should not have been part of the parental controls, but there’s no way to whitelist sites. So, if for example you have a site that deals with medical issues that is blocked as a site that contains nudity (funny Best Buy's review program won't let you write the 4 letter word for this that starts with a p), your option is to not go to the site anymore or allow all types of nudity on the computer. Not great for your kid you want to keep safe from inappropriate pictures but has a biology class. Also, the time limiting function work pretty well so far, but is about the easiest thing to get around that I’ve seen in a parental control app. If you are looking to turn off the internet for your kid and they are at all tech savvy, they’ll figure out how to evade it in a couple of hours tops. If they aren’t tech savvy, they can google it and figure it out even faster. Also the parental control apps are done using groups which each device can only be a part of one group and each group can only have 16 devices. This makes setting things up annoying and trying to edit something for the whole household very tedious. Now here’s the thing about the parental controls though, they suck but they’re as good as everyone else’s built in controls. These are all added for marketing purposes to say they have it, but every company’s version sucks. The only ones I’ve seen that are even remotely good, require a monthly subscription or are placed on devices not the router. So this device is still a good one and I won’t take off stars for the horrible parental controls, but if you were interested in this specifically for the parental controls find a different option. Parental controls that will actually work are much more complex than what will be offered for free as a built-in add-on to a router. Overall: If you are just looking for something to plug in, get running and forget about afterward that delivers great coverage and speed, this is for you. If you are looking for a few advanced options, but nothing to complex, you should be happy as well. If you are a power user looking to take control of every aspect of the router, you may be disappointed. If your current router works just fine but you are looking for parental controls, don’t get this or any new router, look into setups that require a monthly or yearly subscription.

Likely this is due to devices unsuccessfully moving between mesh nodes despite being stationary… had the same issue with Google WiFi. - Has web UI at master node’s IP address, but interface there can do next to nothing. Like Eero, everything has to be done through the app, and the app is less than intuitive, and quite ugly. You have to go 3 menus deep to even see IP addresses. Conclusion: I’ve tested nearly every WiFi mesh on the market in this apartment, and they all perform comparably. I think interference from other people’s WiFi networks is to blame, since there are nearly 20 other WiFi networks in the same building clearly visible to all my devices, though I really expected this to outperform my Orbi RBK20 Wifi 5 routers that I’ve now been through 3 other routers trying to replace (all at twice the price, even on sale). However, Deco and Google are the only ones to have the issue where connection will drop due to confusion around which mesh node to connect to, and frankly, WiFi needs to be more stable than that. I can’t be running a 2 day long database transfer job and just lose connection whenever, nor do I want to get kicked out of games, dropped from Zoom calls, or just generally annoyed by sudden lack of internet. If other brands are comparable in performance, I really can’t overlook this. Lastly, the lack of web interface administration, when combine with a very mediocre app, this will drive tech enthusiasts nuts. I’ve become a bit spoiled by Netgear Orbi’s app, but where TP Link is also a real network hardware company, I really expected better. Planning to return this when I have time. tips: - If you get a consistent 90-100Mbps on ethernet (wire), then the wire is bad. If the wire is damaged, most computers will cap the speed at 100Mbps to prevent issues. - Mirrors, metal structures, large electronics, and large quantities of water (including human bodies) will interfere with WiFi, so try to set up nodes a few feet from such things, and if you imagine a line between the WiFi mesh nodes, don’t put any of these things in that line. - Other WiFi networks overlapping with yours will cause interference. Your WiFi will attempt to use a different channel to avoid this, but there are a very finite number of them. This is a huge issue in apartments. - Most devices do not yet have WiFi 6 cards. The only ones I own that do are M1 Mac products, and the PS5.
