28-70 mm Canon, a lens that didn't need to be updated.

For the price of brand new equipment, these "outdated lenses" are a bargain and still provide a quality of glass that can outperform the sensors behind them.

This lens takes very sharp pictures. The only thing that could make this lens perfect is if it had Image Stabilization too. This lens is a workhorse. Compared to mostly plastic lenses, Tamron & Sigma, this lens is HEAVY. This lens works very well with my Canon 5D Mark III. In-camera JPGs look great. Since the price of SD cards and HDDs/SSDs have come down in price, I'm shooting RAW+jpg. This lens works great on full frame and crop sensor cameras that take EF lenses. I'm no pro, so I can't justify buying L lenses for my hobby. Just like cream puff cars, pro level lenses that have been taken well care of are a bargain compared to their brand new counterparts. The reviews of this lens are spot on. Check out its marks in dxomark lens ratings. This lens will be great the ... MoreThis lens takes very sharp pictures. An undervalued lens

This is an older lens, once the standard in all pro kits. It was replaced a few years later with the 24-70, but it still an outstanding (and now undervalued) lens. If you can get a lightly used model, this is a great lens--very crisp and clear, with rich color rendering. I feel the AF is a little slow compared to newer lenses, but it is still quick. The hood is difficult to come by, I've found, so bonus if you can get a used lens *with* the hood.

BRILLIANT!
13 June 2018

The quality of this lens is outstanding are as the image results. This is the second lens of this kind which I have owned and due to a recent mishap (fault with tripod securing catch) that lens and my 5D ended up in the river. I was quite gutted by this event. I replaced the camera and was looking for a lens as good as the one that went for a swim, and was dubious that although I could buy another lens which was visual equal my original lens, I was uncertain if it would produce images like my original. I was amazingly surprised! The images are pin sharp, the edges of all photographs when enlarged are also pin sharp. In all, this was a GREAT buy. I am delighted. ps. I cannot add any photos at this time as I have only just bought this lens, and have yet to down load ... MoreThe quality of this lens is outstanding are as the image results. Excellent lens except when it has "haze" problem
11 February 2022

I believe that there are many excellent copies of this lens available, but quite a few copies have what is called a "haze" problem (suggesting that the inner elements can simply be cleaned). I bought such a lens on eBay and found that the haze issue is a very serious problem. The problem is often due to glue deterioration within a doublet lens in the 4th (innermost) group. The doublet lens consists of two pieces of glass (known as a flint and a crown) that are glued together face to face. The doublet is sealed in a plastic housing. The entire unit has the serial number CY1-2532. None of these units seem to be available anywhere on the planet. I repaired mine by disassembling the plastic unit with a small woodcarver's chisel. Once I removed the doublet I soaked it in Methylene Chloride for at least 30(!) days. Be careful this is a volatile and dangerous chemical. I then carefully split the doublet apart with my fingernail (the glass can easily crack at any point during this process). I then cleaned the surfaces with more Methylene Chloride and alcohol. I glued the doublet back together with Norland 61 optical adhesive. Properly aligning the two halves of the double is difficult (without special equipment) especially since the flint and crown have different diameters. After the lens is re-assembled it still needs to be aligned (which is a whole other matter). Ultimately the only expense of this repair was the cost of the chemicals, adhesive, a chisel, and a UV light -- but the repair is very time-consuming and a lot can go wrong. In 2020 Midwest Camera Repair gave me a quote of $425 to do the complete repair (using a baking process rather than using chemical solvents) and included aligning the lens.

Great Deal! Love my lens! Shipped on time. Thank you:)

This lens has a beautiful bokeh. The small bit of dust in the lens does not effect picture quality whatsoever. As expected from L-glass, this lens is nice and sharp while having a functional focal range for a walk-around or full portrait lens. I highly recommend this lens, as it is discontinued, it is a favorite lens among Canon enthusiasts, and for good reason. The lens is not unrealistically heavy, and works for crop and full body cameras with excellent low light capabilites. Colors tend towards the warmer side. This is known to great studio lens!

Sharp sharp sharp--and rich color!
6 January 2016

I bought this lens used on ebay when my favorite lens, a 24-105L, encountered the famous ribbon problem it is prone to, where it no longer zooms past about 28 mm (annoying!). I thought the 24-105 was a great lens, but it is really soft by comparison. This lens is in a class by itself. It has the sharpness of a prime throughout its range. It is as sharp and fast as my 50 mm 1.4, which is pretty darned sharp and fast. Every lens has a different "look" and personality (as unscientific as that sounds!). This lens is almost cinematic in its richness of color and what it does with light. It manages to be sharp and buttery at the same time. The lens IS heavy, but you get used to that, and I personally like a lens with weight. HIGHLY recommend!

Still a very strong performer
27 January 2024

I didn't have much time with it yet, but it feels very solid. I took a few shots to make sure there are no defects with the lens. This lens replaced my EF 85mm 1.8, and since both 85mm and 28-70mm were released in the same years, their focus rings and speed feel pretty similar. I have a 16-35mm f4 which is a newer lens and it certainly has smoother inputs. Overall, Awesome lens and I can't wait to shoot more with it

The best lens value for money 2nd hand in 2016
10 June 2016

After being superceded by the 24-70mm f/2.8 mk2 in 2012 the 24-70mm f2.8 mk1 is still the same price 2nd hand as it was brand new under $1,400 compared to $2,500. This lens gets upto 2.8 letting you get perfect portraits at parties and is still a little better lens than the newer f/4L 24-70mm version in terms of sharpness and build quality. This mk1 version is made almost entirely out of metal, but it also makes it way a little bit more. But the feel of this lens is unreal and the best bang for buck on the market right now. It is my very first L series lens and definitely won't be my last.
