Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the launch of the new 18-125mm F3.5-5.6 DC. This zoom lens was exclusively designed for use with digital Single-Lens Reflex (SLR) cameras and has 6.9 times high magnification zoom ratio. Image circle is designed to match the size of the image sensor of digital SLR cameras. A Special Low Dispersion (SLD) and two pieces of aspherical glass elements produce high level of optical performance through the entire zoom range and also this has resulted in a compact, lightweight lens. This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 50cm (19.6in.) at all focal lengths and equipped with inner focusing system. Since the front of the lens does not rotate, "Petal Shaped Hood" and a circular polarizing filter can be easily attached and used. This lens is also equipped with "Zoom Lock Switch" that eliminates "Zoom Creep."

A fantastic upgrade from your kit lens

Build quality is excellent and it's natural to use and is quite light too, at least compared to the Canon 28-135 IS.Image quality on the whole is good too and it really shines in good light with very fast autofocus with rarely misses a beat. Slight loss of detail at 125mm and it can struggle a bit in low light and when finding its limits shooting closeups but for the range of zoom its an incredibly handy lens to have around that gives everything else a run for its money.

This lens was bought for my wife who has just started on wild flower photography. It has a very good central sweet spot focus that is appropriate for this photography, but be prepared for some loss at the edges. It is not a fast lens, and does not cope well with low light situations - the image stabilisation can be a drain on the battery. It can also be a bit slow to focus. It is well built and easy to use, turning in some excellent close-ups when attached to a EOS40D. On the whole it is a good general purpose lens as an upgrade, or for general snapshots, or if you have a specific purpose in mind.

Amazing Sigma lens.

I am impressed with the lens. The lens takes very sharp pictures and focuses very well. My Nikon D7000 allowed me to peak the auto focus sharpness for this specific lens to allow it to function at its peak.

An excellent all rounder
5 August 2010

The lens is just about as plug and play as it gets; just fit to the camera and you are away. The swith on the side selects OS or not, I have not really tested it on and off but all shots taken have had excellent focus and detail with my D50. I have had no trouble with noise or slow focusing nor have I noticed any additional battery drain. The zoom makes it great for general purpose use from landscape to close up sight seeing shots. Only down side it the weight, but that was not unexpected to get the extra focal length over the standard lens. The 'lock' switch only works on minimum zoom, which is a niggle but no real drawback. All in all, a cracking bit of kit.

Good carry lens
24 October 2010

This lens was bought to accompany my Nikon 70/300VR; so weight is not a problem. Bought to replace Nikon 18-105VR to give longer zoom on Nikon D90. Thoroughly tested this lens for signs of any problem regarding Optical Stabiliser; non found. Focus is fast, even in dark corners without using D90's focus assist light. The lens does emit a slight hum when powered up; only heard with ear to barrel. The focus mechanism does make a noise when activated, but so does the Nikon.Lens testing websites show that Sigma has better characteristics for distortion and vignetting than Nikon. Negative comment refers to focus-ring rotating in A/F mode which you have to get used to; Nikon does not.

Great lense for crop sensors!
15 November 2018

I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality and build of this lense. It's amazing for this price. Buy with confidence, it is exactly as described and pictured.Sadly it is not compatible with Fullframe camera sensors so i had to return it and CEX made that smooth and easy for me. Thanks guys!

Nice lens but firmware update on camera caused problems
22 January 2018

I updated the firmware in my Nikon D5500, now the autofocus doesn't work. It still works with manual focus and the pictures are sharp, but it's a hassle without the autofocus. I recently learned these older Sigma lens may have issues with firmware updates on Nikon because the lens are reversed engineered, so Sigma doesn't pay Nikon for the technology to work properly sometimes with the firmware updates. Not happy about that.

Noisy, therefore Disappointing
23 July 2010

I had been looking for a lens in the 18-120 range for some time, for general purpose photography and day trips when not wanting to carry a bag of lenses, so this seemed the perfect partner for my Nikon D90.The build quality out of the box was typically Sigma, it felt solid and I liked the way it handled on the camera. (I already own a Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6 and that works well on the D90)Unfortunately, all my expectations were shattered when I switched the camera on and brought it to my eye. There was a sound audible which came from the lens, I expected some noise as the OS settled but this was a constant crackle, an electrical noise that suggested (to me at least) internal circuits maybe frying.I thought I may be unlucky and have a bad lens so asked for a ... MoreI had been looking for a lens in the 18-120 range for some time, for general purpose photography and day trips when not wanting to carry a bag of lenses, so this seemed the perfect partner for my Nikon D90.The build quality out of the box was typically Sigma, it felt solid and I liked the way it handled on the camera. I regretfully decided I could not live with it. None of my Nikon VR lenses made any such noise, so I was disappointed in this particular offering from Sigma.Full marks to Warehouse Express for their no quibble returns policy on both lenses and the courtesy and understanding shown by their staff.

Super Zoom!
20 January 2010

My family and granchildren live in London and after suffering from near exhaustion from lugging about a bag full of Sigma f2.8's on my frequent visits decided to hunt around for a good general purpose 'snapshot' lens to go on my Nikon D80 and D300 to hopefully a) cut down the weight and b) not lose too much flexibility. After browsing through this most excellent website for suitable candidates I came up with a shortlist, the Sigma 18-125 f3.8-5.6 and Nikon 18-135 f3.5-5.6. approx 24-180mm or so in 35mm terms. Both were in stock at my local camera dealers here in Exeter (sorry W.E. but I wanted to try them first!) the Nikon second hand with a good price saving on new.The Sigma won quite easily, it's build quality was far superior, it had a metal mounting ring (the ... MoreMy family and granchildren live in London and after suffering from near exhaustion from lugging about a bag full of Sigma f2.8's on my frequent visits decided to hunt around for a good general purpose 'snapshot' lens to go on my Nikon D80 and D300 to hopefully a) cut down the weight and b) not lose too much flexibility. After browsing through this most excellent website for suitable candidates I came up with a shortlist, the Sigma 18-125 f3.8-5.6 and Nikon 18-135 f3.5-5.6. approx 24-180mm or so in 35mm terms. Both were in stock at my local camera dealers here in Exeter (sorry W.E. but I wanted to try them first!) the Nikon second hand with a good price saving on new.The Sigma won quite easily, it's build quality was far superior, it had a metal mounting ring (the Nikon optic was plastic) and image stabilisation (the Nikon doesn't) and the price differential wasn't enormous considering the Nikon lens was second hand. I bolted the Sigma onto the front of my camera and took a few test shots in the shop and out of the door. It was a dull, grey afternoon but the results looked promising so I bought it.A day or so later the snow and ice arrived and, although bitterly cold, the light was gorgeous. I decided to risk an hour or two until my hands turned blue to test my new lens. The OS system on the lens whirrs for the first thirty seconds or so after the camera is activated, whether it's switched on or not! Quirky! However it's antics didn't seem to cause any significant battery drain and the system works beautifully - I found the photographs needed very little sharpening in post processing on Capture NX after the shoot. The lens delivers good colour rendition and contrast, and while there is a small amount of barrel distortion at 18mm it was no more than I expected from a lens with this focal range and I couldn't detect any other major optical flaws as I took pictures at various settings throughout the zoom range. Even wide open at 125mm the results were more than acceptable. For some strange reason known only to Sigma the zoom lock only works at 18mm, not throughout the range - it would be far more use if it did. The zoom ring has enough resistance not to 'walk' while stored in the bag and I didn't detect any 'creep' while using it on the shoot. The zoom ring is wide, ribbed, and easy to use, the focus ring much narrower, although at the front of the lens it's easy enough to operate. The lens has the usual 'trombone' extension' as it zooms from 18mm to 125mm but the front element doesn't rotate while doing so and the extension isn't over long. That's a great advantage for filter users, just be careful if you're shooting a tiger through glass at the local zoo! The thread size is 67mm so you won't need to extend your mortgage to buy a polarizer! The lens balanced beautifully on both of my cameras and was a joy to use, the autofocus being fast, smooth, quiet and accurate. Incidentally, I normally use a power grip with my D80 to ballast the heavy f2.8's but haven't one for the D300. It don't need one when I'm using this lens! The handling is brilliant, so considering that a battery grip for the D300 isn't much less that that for the 18-125 then it's saved me most of it's purchase price already! Now I must admit I haven't tried the lens when the light's less than perfect for any length of time. This is where this type of lens loses out heavily on faster (though much more expensive) optics. It's also much more difficult to 'isolate' subjects in a scene, especially when f5.6 is the minimum aperture. It's a pity in my view that there aren't more f3.5-f4 general pupose zooms available on the market, there only seems to be f2.8's which while beautifully made weigh a ton and cost a fortune, or slower kit lenses with dubious build and optical quality.I think the Sigma comes somewhere in between, although in build quality and optically it's nearer the top end than the bottomNow, lens star rating. I'm always a little wary of those because I think it's easy to do products down and compare them unfairly against others that are way outside the price range, so I'm rating this lens against it's competition, not against pro glass that costs thousands. If you're looking for a good, reasonably priced go anywhere, do most things zoom, then take a very good close look at this one.I'm not sorry I bought mine.Recommended.
