My daughter worked some of her way through college in a smoothie shop. The first thing we made was a smoothie the blender failed miserably at mixing ice, water, sorbet, and frozen strawberries. It mixed the bottom but nothing else. We used the tool that came with it to push the contents down to the bottom and had to really work at it to get it to mix. Also had to add way more water than the recipe called for to see if that would help, it didn't. Overall I do like this blender and the brand. I think they build high quality machines. My thoughts are below.Pros- Visually appealing compared to most blenders available.- High performance.- Low to high speed setting give you a lot of control.- Simple, no crazy buttons to figure out.- I know it will last long. I’ve used these in cafes for years and they seem to never break if taken care of.Cons- Lack of safety features, it would be easy to accidentally turn it on without the lid on on the highest setting (which is a very intense setting which some people may not expect).- Expensive. There are other blenders (Ninja comes to mind) that would fulfil majority of the same needs, with the exception of possible longevity.- Power to weight issue. It can be frozen for later but goes very hard so needs to be frozen in scoops and allowed to thaw for a bit. Better to serve immediately - though, if you have guests waiting in anticipation, you might want to warn them, this is not a quiet machine on full power.If you drink a lot of nut based milks, cream and butters, this machine will start saving you money. I have whizzed up some delicious cashew and almond milks for just the cost of the nuts. The cashew cream is delicious poured over breakfast cereal or fruit in place of yoghurt.The only additional item I found I needed was the specially shaped spatula designed to go down the corners of the goblet and under the blades. It makes it much easier to get the stickier mixes out such as frozen desert and nut butter. John Lewis don't seem to stock it at the moment and it is quite expensive. You might also want to buy a cover to keep it clean, I found on with pockets on the side to store the plunger and spatula.Which brings me to cleaning. You can't separate the goblet from the blades and any fiddling here negates the warranty - I certainly would not want to try in view of the power of the machine. The recommended method is to add a few drops of washing up liquid to warm water and blitz. Hmmm... Doesn't really work. However, I have not found it difficult to clean inside the goblet with classic hot and soapy and a dishcloth.There are other Vitamix machines that offer presets for different foods but it seems that these just control the speed of the blades. In practice, it is not difficult to get the feel for doing this manually. Larger items like nuts, frozen fruit or ice cubes need slower blades until they are broken up, then you speed up.There are masses of videos on line offering help and advice and some delicious recipes. Then it's fun to just get creative.
I really enjoy my Explorian 310 Blender. It cost lest than the Ascent series blenders and it comes with a 48oz. container as opposed to the 64 oz. container that comes standard with most (but not all) Ascent models.This is important to me because I am single and I mostly make small batches of things. The 48 oz. container is far superior when it comes to making small batches. In addition, the 48 oz container is large enough for all but the largest of recipes.Even though it only has a 2hp motor as opposed to a 2.2 hp motor like the Ascent model blenders, it does just as good of job of blending even the toughest ingredients.
As a satisfied Vitamix owner the E310 gets one star, not a good value from me. Their standard blenders have a stronger more durable motor not the 2.0 hp included in this. The standard container for home use, the 64 oz low container is not included and will cost $160 more. For the same money on sale the 7500 is a stronger, quieter and better built blender. Short warranty: Vitamix is famous for its full parts labor shipping both ways warranty service. But this does not have the 7 year warranty included with the E320 or the 7500 both of which may be had on sale new for less than this E310. I don't recommend the short warranty but if this does not matter to you then factory direct certified refurbs are just as good with 3 year warranty.

I've owned two Vitamix blenders previously purchased at Costco. In both cases, the Start switch failed for no apparent reason. While the pulse worked, it was not convenient to have to hold it down for regular blending. I believe they were the 5300 series. The Explorian is more basic, and more plastic, buts appears to function quieter, and blend just as well. Overall, I've not found any other blender that's as good as a Vitamix. Some Ninja's perform as well but construction is very cheap, especially with the nylon washer in the blade assembly, which lasted less than a year and replacement was almost as expensive as a new machine. I'm hopeful that the simple switch on the Explorian has solved the Start Switch problem.

Normally I'm not a fan of vegetables unless they're raw and drenched in blue cheese dressing, which kind of defeats the purpose if you're interested in healthy eating. But this machine blends any combination of any of them in as many different ingredient combinations as you can dream up, creating an endless variety of perfectly liquified vegetable, fruit, and vegetable/fruit ... More...more than 20 years ago. Normally I'm not a fan of vegetables unless they're raw and drenched in blue cheese dressing, which kind of defeats the purpose if you're interested in healthy eating. But this machine blends any combination of any of them in as many different ingredient combinations as you can dream up, creating an endless variety of perfectly liquified vegetable, fruit, and vegetable/fruit beverages which make getting a full day's supply of things like spinach, kale, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, peas, lima beans, etc. etc. etc. easy to swallow, very tasty, and so widely varied so they just never become boring or routine. Add protein powder (I particularly like 100% pea protein powder) and this becomes a daily breakfast that hits all the day's recommended vegetable intake requirements and usually holds me til dinner. Two decades ago the sticker price made me reluctant to try it. The reviews then convinced me to try. It was the best money I've ever spent, worth every dime. It operates now just as smoothly and effectively as it did then. The only change I've made was to invest in one of the stainless steel containers a few years ago b/c I found the plastic one a little difficult to keep perfectly clean. (You don't want to put it in a dishwasher.) But the stainless steel version cleans up thoroughly by using a half cup or so of water and a drop or two of dish detergent and processing it for maybe a minute. If you're on the fence, get off it. You're not going to regret this purchase for a minute. Your grandkids could very well inherit it and I'd be surprised if it didn't work just as well then as it does now. I don't know how they get this quality and durability at *any* price point.
