Another surprise was that even though a entry level unit upgraded accessory lens were available. We would be confident in purchasing this item in the future if we hosted a similar event. Thanks.

This telescope appears to be durable and of good quality. I liked the adjustable legs. All of this would be great if the thing actually worked. I purchased this as a Christmas gift for my son and he was very disappointed. We could never get it to focus or see anything through it.

Giving this telescope a 1 star is being very generous. My daughter got this as a birthday present from her grandpa. As were setting it up and adjusted the tripod legs, one of the tripod leg adjusters broke. This was the first time we'd ever used it and the tripod leg broke. But we rigged the broken tripod leg so we could look at the moon that night. So there are 2 lenses that come with the telescope. Both lenses have some kind of fibers (or something) embedded in the each of the lenses so when you look thru them, all you can see is these hair like fibers everywhere. We cleaned them and the fibers are embedded in the glass.Lastly, the the telescope is just plain junk. I had to blacken the inside wall of the telescope.
31 July 2018

It's good; it just needed some light baffles. I took mine apart and I glued black paper to the inside wall of the telescope to minimize stray light reflections. I did the same for the viewfinder. I was looking at the planet Mars last night with the telescope. The picture shows the front end of my telescope. Note how black I made the inside wall of the telescope so I can use it at night for astronomy.

I would not recommend this product.
21 November 2020

I would not recommend this product. The telescope came without instruction for assembly but was pretty straight forward to put together. The screws for the eyepiece meant to hold the lense and be the adjustment screws for adjusting focus do not hold things in place and the parts fall off. Really not useable. I would not recommend this product.

Piece of Utter Junk
28 April 2013

I purchased this telescope for my 7-year old, thinking that it would be simple enough to be a great beginner's telescope. First of all, when I got the telescope home and began to assemble it, INSTANTLY something broke. It is light as a feather and very cheaply made which I am very disappointed in Vivitar about. Secondly, most of the holes on the telescope that require a screw are too big and just appears to be a hole 'punched' through cheap plastic. Third, the telescope never fit properly on the tripod; you are required to screw the telescope onto the tripod but it became stripped after a few adjustments. Fourth, there are three connecters at the bottom of the tripod; one of the connecters broke (after observing the connecters on the tripod they appeared to be metal ... MoreI purchased this telescope for my 7-year old, thinking that it would be simple enough to be a great beginner's telescope. Fifth, we attempted to use the telescope to view very simple items in our backyard and could never really get it to focus well no matter how much we tried. It was very disappointing because we ordered it online, waited for it to arrive and my son really wanted to use it and couldn't. It's a very handsome telescope but we were truly deceived; the quality of this thing is sub-par.

Review by a professional astronomer
10 December 2019

The optics are good enough to show you craters and mountains on the moon, cloud bands and moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn and more. Unfortunately, you will need a lot of patience, as these small cheap telescopes are difficult to precisely point and vibration can be a problem. If you know all this up front and can put up with the shortcomings, you won't get anything better for the price. But I suggest you spend more money for something more user-friendly.

Very cheap telescope.
4 August 2020

I ordered this telescope so my daughters and I could view the rings of Saturn. Supposedly, you only need 25x power to see them. The lenses are so poor quality on this telescope, the best you can get is a fuzzy, blurry ball. We could just barely, if you squint and hold your breath, see the barest hint of the shadows on either side of Saturn demarking the separation between the planet and the rings, but nothing definite. Jupiter was even more ludicrous. It looked like a "blurry rainbow ball" according to my 16 year old. What's worse, you can't see the moons on maximum magnification. I have 6x binoculars that can see 5 of Jupiter's moons, but this 120x scope can't pull it off. Super disappointment. Don't waste your money.

Do not waste your money on this product. When we tried looking through it, it was pitch black, or looked like microscopic germs. It was very blurry and difficult to adjust Very cheaply made. Lighter than a feather. The screws won't tighten and the telescope just won't focus on anything. It was a gift for our daughter and she was very upset and disappointed. They should stick to making cameras!
