Better than Diamondback

Initially bought these on Amazon and received them in a plastic bag that had been tossed around and damaged the binoculars. Sent them back and ordered from here and received them packaged correctly and not damaged. I used the Diamondback HD 8x42 for birding and wanted to upgrade to Vipers. They are both phenomenal binos but these are a bit better in low light and clarity. The only thing I dislike about them is how they feel in your hands. I prefer the design of the Diamonbacks/Razors in this regard. Worth the upgrade though. Also, great vortex warranty included.

Birding-- Price is worth it for the upgrade -- Viper 8 x 42

I have an 8 x42 Monarch that I have had for 20 years or so. My husband has decided to start joining me so I thought I might try an upgrade on a new set. I called around but couldn't find anything stocked in the Boston area. So I bought the 8 x42 and the 10 x 42 Viper as well as the newest version of the Monarch. The Viper 8 x42 is a significant upgrade from the Monarch 8 x 42 in terms of clarity at similar distances and it remains stable and clear for longer distances. The 10 x 42 I didn't like for birding. The Viper 8 x 42 is almost as light (I am a small person) as the Monarch and feels good in the hand. The reviews that the birding community say are all true. This is a great product.

My outings are anywhere from 2-8 hours long and I haven't once noticed the weight of my pair being a strain on my neck. With the neck strap quick-disconnects and all rubber lens protection attached, the weight is only 31.7 ounces (898 grams).Moving up from 8.5x magnification to 12x magnification worried me a bit regarding amplification of any hand-shake, but there was no way to gauge the difference before purchasing. I'm happy to report, as other reviewers have noted, that I have had no issue with my pair and image shake. The build quality is excellent, and I love the feel of these binoculars in my hands. I have tried more compact binoculars, but I prefer a larger pair that allows for a firm but comfortable fit in the palms of my hands - versus having to hold a compact pair with my fingertips because they are so small. The firm grip is one reason I believe any shake amplification is minimal.Image quality and light-gathering is amazing as noted by other reviewers. It's a real joy having a small warbler at the very tops of a tall oak tree being brought down to me at a size that I'm confident in recording an observation. Conversely, it's almost freakish how these binoculars can sharply focus in on a bird literally just a few steps away. I'll likely purchase another pair with reduced magnification for a wider field of view for viewing birds that allow for a much closer approach. Making the jump from 8.5x magnification to 12x magnification, I've had to become much more accurate in my aim, but the result is well-worth it and I like the challenge! There was one very minor issue with my purchase and it didn't involve the binoculars themselves. One of the four nylon straps on the back of the soft case which hold the buckles for attachment to the optional Vortex Binocular Harness Strap wasn't completely sewed-in making the harness unusable. I sent an image of the bag to Vortex customer service via their website and a new was bag sent to me at new charge within two days! Too easy! Just another example of the excellent customer service that comes with the purchase of Vortex glass.I'm 100% satisfied with my purchase and am convinced that this pair of Vortex Viper HD binoculars will last me the rest of my days. It's a bonus that Vortex was born in southern Wisconsin, with corporate HQ residing today in Barneveld, Wisconsin and only a 30 minute drive from where I live.

Exactly what I needed!
6 January 2023

Started birding but didn't have a binoculars to get close to see bird details. The Viper HD is a well built binoculars and is really easy to adjust. The viewing is very clear and vivid. The focus range is incredible! The included neck strap is comfortable but I recommend a binocular harness for extra comfort on long usage. I like the ocular and objective lens covers. The GlassPak harness is perfect for travel and long expeditions. It's a great purchase, especially from B&H!

Excellent sturdy binoculars
8 November 2022

It is surprising to me that people say they see no difference between these and the diamondbacks. I do see a difference in image quality and overall quality. They are also a bit nicer in the hand and have a sturdy build. These were a gift for someone but I have had the same version since 2018 and used them extensively for field work in dense vegetation and in a very wet environment. If you are a field biologist working with small birds you will love them. They work well after getting soaked, dropped, banged against trees and rocks, and generally dragged across the ground (along with yours truly). I wouldn't want to do that with a $2500 pair of binos but these survive and still work great, especially for getting those color combos. Also the 10s are good for raptor ... MoreIt is surprising to me that people say they see no difference between these and the diamondbacks. I do see a difference in image quality and overall quality. Great Travel Size
9 August 2022

We were looking for a new travel size binoculars as we cruise Transatlantic & Transpacific. Our marine binoculars from West Marine were great while boating but are heavy and take up took much carry on space. The guy behind the counter was fantastic, not pushy or rushing us to make a decision. He showed us various magnifications/sizes and describing the differences with each one.We chose the Vortex 8x42 Viper HD because they ticked most all of the boxes we were looking for at the price that didn't break the bank.We love the size and weight, the focus wheel is slow & precise. They are exactly what we were looking for.Love B&H - always professional and wonderful to deal wit.

Summary: I'd really give these 4.5 stars if I could, but I thought they were deserving of more than 4 stars.I bought these binoculars without seeing them in person after reviewing many articles and forums on the internet, recognizing that there was some chance I wouldn't be happy and want to return them. However, I am happy to say that I have been quite pleased with them so far. My other binoculars are an old, reasonable quality 7x35 Porro prism set, but they have fixed eye cups and can't really be used while wearing glasses. I have slight astigmatism and being able to use binoculars while wearing glasses makes a noticeable improvement. Also, they are noticeably brighter than my other binoculars. I haven't tried them much in any difficult lighting conditions, but the sharpness and ability to see fine detail is, I think, quite impressive. There are two aspects which drag these down to 4.5 stars. First, the adjustment on the right eyepiece has a clumsy locking ring. I've never had problems on any other binoculars with the eyepiece adjustment changing by itself, so I don't see the need for the funky locking ring. Also, there is no diopter scale there, which (given that it is essentially a zero-cost item), is a bit confusing.Second, and a bit more serious, is the fact that the center hinge is too easy to adjust; it is easy for this setting to change by itself as you carry the binoculars around. My old binoculars (and others I have used) are easy to set, and yet pretty much stay in the width to which they were adjusted. I don't know whether this loose hinge is typical of these binoculars or whether my pair is a bit unusual.Other than those relatively minor quibbles, I am happy with the purchase. I bought them after Christmas when there was a significantly large coupon available, and my reading (and questions on internet forums) leads me to believe there is nothing that comes near them in quality for that price range. Even for the regular B&H price I would recommend them.

Very Good Glass - Regardless of price.

I bought my pair of these at a Sportsmans in Las Vegas NV. I reviewed these online on numerous sites. These are simply stunning binoculars. Well built - no worries about a drop or two, armored glass front and rear to cut down on inadvertent cleaning mistakes, inert gas filled and waterproof to prevent degradation of alot of lens and prisim surfaces. They are bright - within 4% of equivalent Swarovski, they focus accurately and the diopter is accurate and locks in place. Eye relief is generous and adjustable. I spent quite a bit of time researching mid-range binoculars prior to purchasing. Both offer great warranty protection and I knew either brand would satisfy my intended use. I was unable to find any place with Athlon's in stock here in Utah and was contemplating ordering a pair of Athlon's and returning them if I didn't like them, when I stumbled across a Vortex sale at Cabela's. Normally $499, listed at $429. Decided the savings was worth it and purchased. Bonus was it comes with a harness. Took them out to local mountains just to glass the area.
