I bought a pair of these about a year ago to use as piano close mics for a jazz duo album, and Ive been impressed every time Ive used them after that.Since then, Ive used these whenever I have an instrument which needs just a little more warmth and a little less brilliance (oboes, recorders, piccolos, sax players desiring a dark tone, etc.). I understand why they included them, but the first thing I did was order of a pair of replacement mounts.- My old Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 (1st Gen) had trouble with background noise. Not sure if it was an impedance, phantom power, or other issue, but using a higher-end preamp, these work flawlessly. I guess its just however those two devices are designed doesnt quite play nice.Hands-down, this is easily my top recommendation for a LDC under $300, especially for male/low voice and acoustic instruments. Multiple polar patterns, highs that dont sound like garbage, good off-axis coloration, and solid noise performance.

Overall:I snagged a pair of these for a big record, mainly to add a different color for a room sound. I ended up popping them over the drums for a VERY full sound. I could easily pull off a full sound with them and a kick. Cymbals were mellow and smooth, drums full.I tried it next on guitar...really loved it. 5150 heavy thrashier tunes, this added a lot of weight and preserved that high end sizzle clearly. I paired it with a SM57 and an e906--was really pleased with the balance it added.Bass...used it on an Oranged AD200B through an Orange 4x10. Crushed it. Full, deep, clean and clear.And, lastly, because I was so thrilled with, I tried it on vocals. Heavy shouting/screams/growls/clean--for this person it was very full, clear, smooth and far from hyped or jubilant. ... I bought a pair during the holiday sale and for the price range this mic is a must have in the studio . I use them for drum overheads! not bad on vocals, acoustic guitar, and what ever else you want to throw at it . i bought 2 more to use as stereo room mics . like I said for the price range you are definitely getting value.

In terms of noise, distortion, sensitivity, coloration and (as far as I could tell, polar pattern) there's nothing to fault. It's a very good LDC mic.Such high fidelity reveals everything in the recording environment too. I would have to spend a fortune on acoustic treatment and sacrifice other uses for my room before I could tolerate the sounds it produces here.Analogy: an ultra hi-res camera reveals all the things impairing the focus and contrast in your photos: defocus and motion blur, lens deficiencies, etc.
The WA-47 is miraculous in it's radiance, but I wouldn't have known this without my sales rep and now guru David,I have learned that he has great knowledge insofar as music production is concerned along with vast technical savvy as well. God willing he and I will continue to utilize our business relationship which is beneficial for Sweetwater and myself. The personal service is exemplary and the company is phenomenal.

The Sound: On vocals, this is as sibilant as any of the Chinese mics in this price range. And I've tried many of them, including AKG, Blue, Sterling (which actually sounds much better than this) and others... It's the kind of hyped-high frequency sound that you get from most cheap mics. It's really hard to "De-S" vocals recorded with this. And overall the sound is rather thin, although it has a solid output volume level, and low noise. But it's just not anything different from the typical 100 Euro mic. Maybe it works better on other instruments. There's not a lot of "body" to the sound. At this price point there isn't a way to reproduce the sound of the classic mic's but they do share some similarities. This couldn't replace a classic U47 but it can stand on its own. What you do get is a budget priced professional microphone. These have extremely low noise and a beautiful warmth to them. As a condenser, it has a wide range of uses and I really like using them to mic a drum kit in a larger room. They work great on miking guitar amps and give some of the larger condensers a run for their money. An original U47 needs to handled very carefully and isn't something you'd want to use on a constant basis. While the WA-47jr ...
