Super CoooL look, sturdy case, and WOW performance! I'm averaging about 1.8 Gbps data transfer on XBOX Series X... nearly twice as fast as my standard spinny drives on the same platform. Drive can be configured for use on multiple XBOX devices and your console will prompt you to choose configuration on initial setup. Game play direct from this drive is flawlessly smooth when allowed... XBOX Series X is less accommodating than XBOX ONE in that regard so keep that in mind. I wish it had a power switch... I'm sure it sleeps but that would be nice. Great storage solution for the hundreds of games I have considering size and price... Thanks again WD... The only drives I ever use in all my builds and peripheral applications.

I could’ve just gotten the Xbox/seagate expansion and never had an issue. Now I’ve wasted money on a drive I can’t use for anything useful. An expensive paperweight.

Beastly External Drive
1 May 2020

Note: The unit I received had a faulty or underspec'd USB A to C cable that greatly reduced speeds to USB 2.0 speeds. I was able to troubleshoot and find this was a faulty cable, so this did not factor into my score, but it is something other buyers should be aware of.Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I can say this drive is an absolute beast at a great price. Not only does it look awesome with its hacker Area-51 text and rugged Ammo Crate design, the metal chassis seems to help keep it cool and also protects it. The USB 3.2 2x2 speeds right now are aspirational because so few platforms support it now, but you've got headroom to spare in the future with up to 2GB/s transfer speeds. The USB 3.2 2x2 speeds right now are aspirational because so few platforms support it now, but you've got headroom to spare in the future with up to 2GB/s transfer speeds. The USB 3.2 Gen 2 speeds do hit the advertised 10Gbps speeds and roughly 900MB/s speeds.Quick primer for those who are confused, through no fault of your own since the USB spec has been a mess the last few years:USB 3.2 Gen 1 = 5Gbps = roughly 500MB/s max throughput (Consoles and PCs ~5 years old)USB 3.2 Gen 2 = 10Gbps = roughly 1TB/s max throughput (PCs for last 3 years)USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 = 20Gbps = roughly 2TB/s max throughput (Z490 Intel PCs and Next-gen PS5/XBox Series X, maybe)Bottomline is most people buying this drive rightly now will only see 10Gbps or ~900MB/s speeds right now, but that will change later this year and in the future.Without boring you with screenshots and numbers, the P50 was able to accomplish this max throughput *BUT* only with my USB-C connector on my Z370-based desktop, i7-8750H laptop, and Surface Laptop 3. With the USB-A to USB-C connector, I was actually getting only USB 2.0 speeds. I swapped the cable with other SSD drives I had like the Sammy T3 just to make sure I wasn't crazy, and lo and behold, same speeds as with USB-C cable. So I will let WD know they potentially have a faulty cable shipping with this drive, maybe not enough pin connectors.Anyways, I highly recommend this drive for anyone who needs extra storage on their PC or their console, but keep in mind, it will only be as fast as the device it is connected to. I can't wait to use this for the next-gen consoles which I do think will be able to hit the full 2GB/s speeds.

Best Portable SSD for high-end PCs!
30 April 2020

I will just start by saying that from the price to the build quality to the performance, this drive obviously does not reflect your average portable drive. This drive is meant for the dedicated content creation professional or hardcore gamer, someone who demands top performance out of their equipment. In my opinion console users should skip; I fully detail why below. My test platform for this drive was my custom gaming and content creation PC with a 2019 Asus ROG STRIX Z390-E GAMING motherboard with a USB 3.1 Gen 1 USB-C connection. Thus, I did not even come close to the 2000MB/s read/write speeds this drive can achieve through a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. With my USB 3.1 Geb 1 interface, according to CrystalDiskMark7 I achieved a SEQ1M write speed of 1061MB/s and ... MoreI will just start by saying that from the price to the build quality to the performance, this drive obviously does not reflect your average portable drive. Thus, I did not even come close to the 2000MB/s read/write speeds this drive can achieve through a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface. With my USB 3.1 Geb 1 interface, according to CrystalDiskMark7 I achieved a SEQ1M write speed of 1061MB/s and a write speed of 1019MB/s. What this means is that the bottleneck to achieving the top advertised speeds of this drive is my USB 3.1 Gen 1 interface and not the drive! I also tested the read/write speed of this drive over a USB 3.0 connection using the included USB-C to USB-A cable and had a read of 464MB/s and write of 465MB/s, once again demonstrating the bottleneck is in the connection and not the drive. Another test I performed was the copying of a 10GB folder from my Crucial P1 NVMe M.2 SSD drive in my computer to the WD P50 drive via the USB-A 3.0 and USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 connections I have available. Via USB-A 3.0, the drive copied the folder over at a sustained average rate of 340MB/s with no dips and over USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, I had a sustained average transfer rate of nearly double USB-A 3.0 at 600MB/s with no dips. The summary of all of this is basically that this drive is going to absolutely knock the socks off any tasks that you throw at it for the average use case and with the connection via USB 3.2 Gen 2x2, this thing is going to be as blazing fast as an average NVMe SSD connected to a motherboard via M.2 connection. All the numbers aside, the build quality of the drive itself is just incredibly high level. The WD Black series from Western Digital is something I have come to associate with high quality in general, and this drive continues to prove that. It is encased in a forged aluminum cover and to touch feels well-regulated in its temperature with sustained transfers during my testing. It has the toughness that would have me feeling secure about tossing it into my backpack and heading to the coffee shop without concern for its integrity. Furthermore, being an SSD, this drive has no moving parts unlike a standard portable HDD and thus will be even further suited to portability. For my use case, this is going to be a backup drive to my main drive on my gaming PC and will be partitioned for some of my photo and video editing projects and as a secondary Steam library folder for my games where load times are important (like Fallout 4, lol). The only thing I will say in way of consideration for the buyer is that this drive CAN be used by current gen console users, but that doesn’t mean it SHOULD as a first or top choice. The problem is that current gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One X are not going to even come close to getting the full use out of this drive due to bottlenecking by the consoles’ USB-A connection interface. Thus, the money would likely be wasted here for most console gamers looking for expandability for their console game libraries. Console gamers would be better off with a larger portable hard drive like a WD Easystore or something along those lines. When the new consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X come out in 2020-2021, however, there might be justification for use of higher end portable SSDs like this WD Black P50 for library expansion since the read/write speeds won’t be as bottlenecked by the console/connection interface.Overall, I am incredibly impressed with this drive and I cannot recommend it enough if this is something you are in the market for a high-end Windows PC or Apple PC. Hope this review helped you out and thanks for reading.

Easy setup, space efficient, POOR functionality

I ordered this device a few months prior through Amazon. I was in need of extended space on my PC for gaming and I didn't have any further NVME slots to install internal storage. The internal chip I have installed is WD_BLACK, so I looked into their options for external, having had only good experiences with my other storage. It was very easy to set up and the device looks very nice compared to other extended storage I've used. It's also very quiet compared to others. HOWEVER, I deal with very consistent complete freezes when I'm playing games (even very low system requirement games), and I've offloaded everything and reloaded it from the drive, I've managed and reduced the files within (note, I'm at 2TB filled out of 4TB), and it has all been to no avail.I tried ... MoreI ordered this device a few months prior through Amazon. I worked with a number of support specialists, and they were very kind, but they were not terribly helpful. I consistently got stuck in the claim and device replacement portion of the warranty. I attempted to navigate the site and file the claim myself, but it then said that my device was already registered for a claim. I was unable to manage device replacement and repair, and I feel stuck with a device that isn't up to the standard that's advertised. I would be willing to rewrite a fresh review if WD_BLACK reaches out to me with potential solutions, but for the time being I am unfortunately disappointed and dissatisfied with the device, especially considering the price of these devices.

Excellent for SteamLibrary Storage

I've used my D10 for something like 2 years since ordering off of Newegg early on in the pandemic, and was very satisfied with the actual performance of the drive when using it as a secondary SteamLibrary unit.Allocating disk space during Steam game installs can either be instantaneous, semi-fast, or agonizingly slow depending on the type of storage media you're installing your game onto, and most HDDs tend to err on the agonizining slow slide of things--even the 7,200 RPM drives (especially the external drives) unless you've got a proper SATA setup going on.Suffice it to say, the D10 is nothing like other HDDs insomuch as Steam library installations go. Every install that I've put on this drive has been on the instantaneous/very-fast side of things, and when you're queueing up multiple games (especially if you've got several terabytes worth of titles you're interested in putting in your download queue) this seemingly simple difference in space allocation speed can literally shave as much as 30-60 minutes of waiting time off of your queueing process if you're lining up 30-40+ titles for download. Not to mention, faster write speeds and space allocation also means there's less of a hardware throttle/bottleneck on your download speeds; if you have 2.5GB fiber optic like me, this can mean the difference in as much as 50-100MB/s of download throughput per second. I have external SSDs (first generation, mind you) that are slower than my D10--this is one impressive HDD, and for the price its seriously hard considering buying anything else for the excellent performance. I got mine on sale during Black Friday for something like $79--that's a hair less than $10 per terabyte of storage. This is buy far the best price:performance ratio on any single piece of storage hardware (hell, maybe even just hardware in general) that I've ever paid for. The only disk better for my money that I've bought is my SK Hynix P41 2TB @ $139, and that's a Gen4 M2 clocking 7,000MBs both R/W that I was able to cop at a freakishly good Cyber Monday deal. So that's saying something.Unfortunately, I had to take off a star because I bought a brand new computer and with my new battlestation came a transition from Windows 10 to the new Windows 11. And now I can't get my new computer to read my D10 WD_Black drive at all, no matter which USB port I plug it into--I'm using an ASUS Crosshair VIII, so all my ports are 3.1 and 3.2. And it's not a Endpoints issue common with USB problems on Win 11; I've uninstalled all my other USB devices and left this the only one plugged in but it still won't be recognized by the explorer shell. If I plug it in to my Win 10 computer, however, it shows up just fine still. Talk about frustrating!! Sadly, I had to remove a star on the rating due to this serious compatibility issue, because I've downloaded all the suggested software and drivers/driver updates recommended in troubleshooting guides to zero avail.I'm keeping my fingers cross that it'll magically appear in explorer one day and I can once again enjoy this wonderful device. The performance difference while using these other spare external drives is massively noticeable when playing games, particularly when it comes to preloading textures and streaming cutscenes during gameplay. The D10 was smooth as butter and absolutely mellifluous, and now I'm having to deal with macro and microstuttering on the older external SSDs that I've been forced to replace my D10 with in the meantime, and it's an annoyingly disappointing nuisance. I just want my D10 back in action! :(

Fast drive, super portable

This drive barely takes up any space in my bag and transferring files is a breeze. However, I have had issues with the first one I got where any of my computers couldn't detect it.After tons of troubleshooting, I contacted WD.It took them a week to respond to me to approve my RMA. I sent in the drive, then over a month later, I finally got a new drive. I contacted support multi times during that month and no one could give me an answer as to why this happened. I was without an external drive which I used for work, for 4 weeks. This was not okay. The new drive is working better however it does sometimes make the computer it's connected lose access, only way to fix it is to unplug it and then plug it back in.I wouldn't recommend this drive even though it works ... MoreThis drive barely takes up any space in my bag and transferring files is a breeze. However, a product that cost me $200 shouldn't have any of these issues (on two separate drives)

Great External NVMe SSD - Fast and Silent
30 June 2021

This device is getting great performance connected to my Asus G15 Strix Advantage Edition laptop. The highest throughput my laptop has is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C. This SSD achieved the appropriate speed for that particular throughput at approximately 1,000+ Read & 900+ Write Speeds. In order to hit the 2,000 Read speeds, you will need a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 computer or device, which there aren't many at the moment. Just know that when you purchase it.I can easily game with the external drive without issues. Just understand that the device is formatted for exFAT in order to be compatible with Windows, MAC and consoles. Just understand that the device is formatted for exFAT in order to be compatible with Windows, MAC and consoles. If you are only going to be using the drive on a Windows machine, you may want to reformat to NTFS. When placing PC files on the drive, your file size will likely be much much larger than the native file because of how the exFAT formats files. For example, my PC game with a total file size of a little less than 6GB took approximately 45GB of space because the particular game has a lot of little files. It really surprised me when I observed this the first time and had to read about why it occurred. Just trying to help you in case you experience something similar. I may reformat to NTFS since this drive will primarily be for my Windows gaming computer. The device looks great, is really fast, silent and doesn't get too hot. Just know the proper speeds you should be getting through your particular throughput device and consider the above drive formats. Anyhow, I think you will really like this device and it comes with a 5 year warranty for peace of mind.

Perfect for the PS4 & PC!!!
2 September 2021

So, today I will be reviewing the WD P50 500 GB SSD game drive. I have been using this on my PS4 due to lack of space and multitude of games on my system, but this external SSD can be used with just about anything from your pc, PlayStation and Xbox. This is a pretty solid SSD with a rugged metal shell with a plastic bottom with cut outs for heat dissipation. The SSD has one USB-C connector input but comes two cables, a USB-C to USB-C and a USB-C to USB-A cable and it is pretty much just play and play. I was easily able to access the hard drive on my laptop as well as my PS4.So, like I had mentioned earlier I primarily got this to use with my PS4 and clean up some space on the unit by transferring some games over to the SSD and I was easily able to do so, but it ... MoreSo, today I will be reviewing the WD P50 500 GB SSD game drive. I was easily able to access the hard drive on my laptop as well as my PS4.So, like I had mentioned earlier I primarily got this to use with my PS4 and clean up some space on the unit by transferring some games over to the SSD and I was easily able to do so, but it did take some time. It took nearly 2 hours to transfer over about 200 GB over to the SSD and I was still able to play the games from the SSD without any issues and my games actually loaded a lot faster then they before, so the transferring time made up for it on the loading end. The SSD does advertise up to 2000 MB/s or 2 GB/s but you have to keep in mind that your equipment that you are using needs to be able to support that as well. For my purpose, using this on the PS4 actually worked out pretty well and my games did load up faster than before. I also transferred some pictures that I had from my PC to the SSD and again I had no problem doing so and since the file sizes was relatively small, I was able to move those over in matter of minutes.Overall, the SSD has worked out great, it has cleared up some space on my PS4 and has helped in loading my games faster as well as cleaning up some space on my laptop as well.
