The issue is a lot of current titles made for Series S/X will not run directly from the drive, which means you will have to move the game from the D30 to your Xbox (which can take up to 30 minutes depending on the game, so make sure you plan accordingly).A plus, for those of you without Game Pass, is that this comes with a code for a free month (it only works with new members, not existing ones).Overall, the D30 is a great external drive that serves as an expandable storage solution for your Xbox. It works very well, provides superior performance, and is compact enough to not take up a lot of space. I highly recommend for those of you needing more storage space.

In terms of how this drive looks, I like the stand and the LED light on it and it's just the right size next to your console or gaming PC.You can use this drive with a PC just like you can a console and with a compatible USB Type C or Gen 2 USB 3.0 port it is just as blazing fast as it is on the Xbox Series X console. I do want to clarify that as with other external drives, if you format it for your Xbox console, you can't use it on your PC or expect to play backed up games from an Xbox on your PC or vice versa! This is a great economical way to backup all of your original Xbox games and Xbox One games to play them directly from the drive on the Series X. It's more than fast enough for that and meets that need perfectly! If you want a drive that you can play Series X/S games from directly, you'll have to go to Microsoft for a list of cards that are approved to be used as SSD storage and in which case you'll find they are NOT the same type of connection as this drive and plug in to the storage expansion slot.

I don't know if maybe I had a dusty usb port or what, but I had to unplug and replug the drive a couple times and into a different usb port before it recognized what it was and gave me the option to format it for Xbox.At that point is was quick and easy. Being new the formatting took seconds. Then from there I went through my games and apps and picked out everything I wanted to move. This was so much faster than re-downloading them on the Series X. One of these games was Forza Horizon 4, taking up 77.3 GB of space. I timed the transfer and it took just under 24 minutes to copy it to this drive. With everything copied over from the One X, it was time to setup my new Series X and then plug the drive in. The Series X recognized it first time and it worked right away. I was able to play the games I copied over from the One X directly from the drive on the Series X, no need to transfer them over. One thing I noticed though when playing a game or app from the drive is that you first get a pop-up saying the Xbox is getting it ready to play and may take a minute. It's really more of an annoyance though since by the time you can react to it, the game is ready. I'm not sure the cause of it but it only pops up when I'm playing something stored on this drive. Also, it seems to always be powered on. Even when my xbox is turned off (i keep it in energy saving mode versus the always ready mode), the green light on the drive slowly flashes. The flashing light and the look of it doesn't really matter much though. Since this is devoted to full time use with my Series X I just tuck it in the back so that you don't even really see it.Overall this is a great drive. It's fast, works as its supposed to, is cheaper than other options and literally doubles the storage of the Series X, which desperately needs it seeing as how large some of the games are like Forza and Flight Simulator. And as a bonus, it comes with a code for 1 month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, and it's not just for first time users. I previously had Game Pass Ultimate since it first came out (and regular Game Pass before that), but just had to cancel it the other month to cut down on expenses. I put the enclosed code in and it gave me a full month.

Fast. Really Fast.

Admittedly the games for XBox these days are just beyond huge, rivaling and sometimes surpassing the size of their PC equivalents, so it's easy to find yourself running out of storage but not wanting to remove a game just to install something new. This is a concern because most external drives of any reasonable size are slow and with the performance one expects from the XBox, it's hard to live up to that performance with an external drive that's anything other than SSD with USB 3.2 Gen 2 performance.Enter the WD_BLACK 1TB external USB-C drive. This really is the solution to running out of disk space but not wanting to remove some games to install others. In terms of packaging and looks, it's actually very very small, due to the fact that it is an nVME SSD on the inside so it's smaller than even all standard SSDs. It comes with a vertical stand which is really personal preference on whether you want to use it. I've included a picture of it next to a standard Blu-Ray case to show the size. The performance from the drive is phenomenal. I connected it to my PC just for benchmarking purposes and it consistently reaches very near the advertised performance numbers, mine topping out right around 893MB/s. Included is a screenshot of expected performance numbers. It's really quite good for an external drive. In terms of gaming performance, I connected it to my XBox One S and loaded it up with Plants vs Zombies Battle for Neighborville which, to me, has always had somewhat of an obscene load time. I can tell you that this drive is at least equal in terms of loading and performance with the onboard drive in a real-world type scenario. In timing the loading of the game the difference was negligible as to not even be able really see the difference of the external vs internal drive.Really this is the solution to an undersized Xbox drive and not wanting to constantly reinstall games, particularly with the size of the installs and downloads these days. I strongly recommend this to anyone in the market for an external drive.

Great External Storage for your XBox

This is most likely due to the way these next-gen consoles architect gameplay around the extremely fast storage subsystems and the ability to seamlessly stream content and assets. In terms of performance and compatibility, I actually hooked up the D30 to my PC laptop as well just to verify the speeds and also compare against some other storage methods I have access to.The internal m.2 NVME SSD of the Dell XPS obviously blew away the externals at 2.8GB/s but that was to be expected. The D30 came in just as advertised at 900MB/s Seq. Read/Write speeds. It also stacked up favorably to the more expensive WD Black P50 which came in around 1000MB/s Read/Write, albeit part of this is due to the fact my laptop does not have the USB 3.2 2x2 required to get the full 2000MB/s advertised speeds. Also of note, this D30 drive can also be used with the PS5 and seems identical to the unbranded version of the D30, other than the XBox branding as well as a trial key for XBox Game Pass Ultimate, the only downside is you need to format the drive to work with the PS5 while the XBox and PC are interchangeable without having to format. In terms of build quality, the D30 is light and rugged feeling but slightly bulkier in width compared to the P50, which is metal, heavier and more premium feeling. Still, for the difference in price I would probably go for the D30 in 2TB over the faster P50 in 1TB if I had to choose. 2TB of fast SSD storage means you can quickly shuttle your primary games over to your XBox's primary storage and move them back when you're not playing, and you've nearly tripled your total storage in the meantime.Overall you can't go wrong with this fast method of storage and while you can get an HDD version from WD with a LOT more storage space, you're not going to get as much performance or copy speeds to/from the spinning HDD platform.

Great drive for me, any problems NOT WD fault...
21 March 2023

After buying this drive and running it on new console (series x xbox) I have had literally ZERO problems from the drive and I've seen transfer speeds quoted by xbox system that are faster than the quoted max speeds!!Now here's the thing , the series x needs much higher speeds to run series x/s native games than it does to run older xbox one titles or new titles that are not enhanced for series x/s. So you must install these games on the internal SSD. Any external drive , no matter how fast will (according to the console) not be fast enough to run these enhanced games directly off the external drive. So you must install these games on the internal SSD. Any external drive , no matter how fast will (according to the console) not be fast enough to run these enhanced games directly off the external drive. However ANY game that isn't marked SERIES X/S definately WILL run directly off the external drive perfectly well. (Some titles marked X/S can manage to but not many, always worth a try ,it won't hurt , the console will just say " drive not fast enough )Now this means if you want dozens and dozens of enhanced x/s games on your system at the same time and you run out of space you CAN transfer a game to and from the external WD BLACK drive , shifting the one you want to play onto internal and moving one you won't want to play for now onto the external. A bit annoying yes but STILL much much faster than downloading over the net etc. Even with a 1TB Internet line from virgin media(uks fastest) you rarely see over 700mbps and often much less(@400mbps-600mbps).Transferring files from internal xbox to the wd black I have seen anything from 2.35GBps down to @400MBps depending on file sizes but I would say it averages at much higher, 1.5GBps would be my guess. If it's a small game of 1 or 2 Gb it seems to fly accross from one drive to another and of the game is a huge 100 Gb or more it might start the transfer at 2.3Gbps and slow down in places to 400mbps or jump back up to 1Gbps, it's hard to really know what it will do. But this is down to whether there are thousands of small files or 1 huge data file that needs to be gathered up and pasted accross (at least that's my guess 😁)ALL I know is this. this little 500gb ssd is amazingly fast when it's asked to be fast. And it's faster than my virgin 1TB Internet download speed (and that's pretty damed quick).I've seen reviewers in here saying "my xbox said this drives too slow" talking like this is WDBlack SSDs fault and it simply isn't.This drive performs well and has been flawless even when filled to 96%capacity or down to 30% and back again. I've used it to transfer huge 100GB games to amd from my xbox Internal drive and from as far as I can tell there's been ZERO errors! No game has been swapped and subsequently failed to work, none have ever slowed down to a crawl during swaps which I have seen happen with my other older HDD 4TB drive which I used to back up some games. This little SSD has convinced me that SSDs are without doubt the way to go for the future. Once the larger sizes like 4TB are more affordable I think it will see an end to HDD forever. And btw another thing, I knocked my SSD drive onto the floor and thought "oh no that's gotta be broken" because I'm so used to an accident like that breaking any old HDD I've had but it didn't do anything. It's carried on working flawlessly which is another great feature when you have solid chips storing the data in SSDs and not delicate spinning discs like HDDs.If you own a console, you need a bit more space, you can't afford , or don't want to pay over £100 or more to expand your storage but STILL want a fast way to keep more games 'at the ready' to swap back and forth or keep older generation titles ready to play on to save space in your even faster running INTERNAL drive. This is a GREAT choice.I have not regretted buying and using mine.So much so in fact I'm now eyeing those lovely P50 WD SSD drives with their EVEN FASTER USB-C 3.2 gen 2 connections!!In case you don't know this D30 WD SSD we are talking about is a USB-C 3.2 gen 1 connection which in theory has a limit of 10GBps transfer speed , the gen 2 version should allow 20GBps max transfer. If I knew that new P50 drive would be DOUBLE the speed of the old D30 I might consider getting one 😆. You just need to do your homework to find out, though the whole USB-C thing is VERY confusing. There's like 4 or 5 versions/generations to choose from!!(Again , NOT Western Digitals fault 😁)

Does exactly what i bought it for -I have a Xbox Series S and out the box there wasn’t enough storage space on the console to download not only the games it came with, but also games i wanted to purchase and all the free game pass content. Call of Duty was 150GB in itself and that’s without having downloaded the campaign, just multiplayer and zombies. This is the best option if you don’t want to buy an overpriced expansion card! An external gaming SSD is a much more efficient option than an external gaming hard drive because it reads and writes much faster, and it’s not a disk motor so you can leave it plugged up to the system without worrying about it overheating & affecting performance. An external gaming SSD is a much more efficient option than an external gaming hard drive because it reads and writes much faster, and it’s not a disk motor so you can leave it plugged up to the system without worrying about it overheating & affecting performance. Okay so basically, i can download all my games on this as my default instillation location and can play games off of this and they run smoothly BUT let’s say i buy a game that is optimized for Series X|S and instead of downloading it to the internal storage (console) i elect to download it to this instead, currently you cannot play Series X|S games on an external SSD or HDD so what i do is download that same game to this and when I’m ready to play it just transfer it to the internal storage. It’s super quick. Call of Duty might take 6-7 minutes to transfer. That’s wayyy faster than having to uninstall and reinstall games and it’s two times as fast as an external hard drive. Not to mention a fraction of the price of an expansion card. With Xbox One and Xbox 360 games you don’t have to transfer em, you can just play them off the SSD and they run smoothly. I bought the 1TB SSD and have 30 games installed between both the console and SSD and still have 210GB free. It’s affordable and it aesthetically looks nice. Lightweight and smaller than i thought it would be.

I bought this drive to supplement the storage capacity of my Xbox Series X for games that I play that are not Series X|S optimized. To that end it's been perfect. Western Digital put some serious thought into the D30 that make it perfectly suited for this role of second tier external storage. It's attractive negating the need to hide it away, it's built solidy to make it suitable in the role of free standing external storage including the fact that it clips securely into the included stand, and it's performance is decidedly top tier and current even if not quite as state of the art as Microsoft's velocity architecture and the proprietary Seagate expansion card or the internal M.2 options for the PS5 required for current gen games. The first night I had it I downloaded ~450gb worth of fresh installs in a continuous write operation that lasted around 2.5 hours and didn't have a single issue, with the enclosure of the drive never seeming to come much above ambient temperatures. Load times are impressive, obviously it's silent and overall performance is excellent. Bottom line, this is a quality external SSD purpose built to stand along side the current generation of consoles and in this application it's second to none. If you're looking for an external SSD for your Xbox Series X|S or PS5, look no further than the D30.

Room For More

WD - WD_BLACK D30 1TB Game DriveGamers Can Relate:In this day and age of gaming, we have A LOT of games to choose from which means we can accumulate an extensive collection of games that occupy precious hard drive space. All of us have faced the dilemma of what game(s) or gameplay video to delete to make just enough room to install a new game whether it’s a digital or physical copy.I’ve never used an external game drive with my previous systems because I justified why I would need to delete a game. However, this new generation of gaming delivers games that are much bigger in file sizes due to high definition and ray tracing technology. Sure, my Xbox Series X has 1TB of memory but that memory will be quickly occupied by games that you download from Game Pass because you have a vast variety of choices. Having an additional 1TB of memory eases my mind knowing that I won’t be running out of room anytime soon. The WD Black D30 Game Drive is INSANELY easy to implement with your existing Xbox system.Setting Up:There isn’t any complicated setup. Remove the Game Drive from the package, and plug it into the Xbox system. For me, I used one of the USB ports on the back of my Series X console. The Xbox system will prompt a message asking if the Game Drive will be used for Media or if you want to Format Storage Device. I chose to format. The Game Drive also comes with a neat little stand that allows you to place it upright near your system.Storing Games:I already had games like Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Batman the Arkham Collection, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and Call of Duty Warzone on the Series X internal hard drive. That’s over 300GB of storage. I decided to move those games to the external Game Drive. It was another easy process via the console settings and going into storage options. 138GB from the Halo MCC transferred in about 25 minutes. And you aren’t stuck looking at the transfer progress bar, you can play other games as the Game Drive works in the background. No Regret:Sooner or later, you will be faced with the hard choice of what game or games to delete to make room for another. It’s better to get ahead of that situation and invest in an external Game Drive and have peace of mind.

The fastest external drive I've tried for Series X
26 July 2021

The Xbox Series X has easily become my go to console, having owned every generation of hardware produced and being an Xbox Live member is day one. I say this, because my constant gripe has always been the amount of storage space available for content on each system. With GamePass, it’s now easier than ever to fill up the 1TB of internal space on the Series X and using external mechanical drives to transfer games isn’t quick. So, when WD launched the new external D30 Solid State Drive, I was eager to try it over my previous P10 5TB external WD Black drive (which you can also buy at Best Buy). In the box, you’ll find the D30 SSD, a clip on stand, the USB C to A cable, and the warranty/manual. In the box, you’ll find the D30 SSD, a clip on stand, the USB C to A cable, and the warranty/manual. The drive was plug and play, immediately being recognized by my Xbox when plugged into the Super Speed port on the rear of the console. Once you’ve formatted the drive (which took seconds), it was ready to begin taking data from my internal drive. The first thing I did was move over my copy of Call of Duty MW, a game I continue to play even as Cold War has come out. It’s a large installation on my internal drive (around 200 GB), but moving the game from my internal drive to my SSD took only a handful of minutes, as opposed to 30 min with my mechanical HDD. Some add on files transferred so quickly, they went from queue to transferred, to disappearing from the queue list on the Xbox in a matter of a few seconds. Load times on CoD also improved over the mechanical HDD that I used previously, which is why it ended up on the internal drive in the first place. Load times are nearly non-existent with this drive, and while not being as fast as the internal SSD, they’re more than fast enough to load the older content. The included stand isn’t required, but nicely compliments the look of the casing. It has this tough aggressive look and feel to it, while weighing next to nothing. The LED on the case pulses softly when data transfer is happening, otherwise off when idle. It’s only bright enough to be seen and understood without screaming into your eyes in a dark room. If you don’t need this for your Xbox, you can also connect this to a PC or Mac and format the drive for super transfer speeds. Will this play optimized Series X/S games directly, no. What it will do, is give you another 1Tb of fast storage, allowing you to very quickly free up space on the internal drive, while preserving a copy of your game; thus avoiding another download. Otherwise, you can use this external drive for your Xbox One or Backwards compatible games for fast load times; especially compared to your Xbox One or an external mechanical HDD.
