I bought this external portable hard drive to hold my Xbox One game collection and be able to play them on the Xbox Series X console. As expected, the massive 5TB of storage allows you to install as many games as you wish, but it's important to remember that games optimized for the Series X need to be installed on the internal SSD in order to benefit from the superior playability brought about by the console's powerful processor and enhanced graphics capabilities. So far, I have found that regular Xbox One games play perfectly fine on the Series X and load quickly. I highly recommend this fine Western Digital external drive for your gaming needs.

Works great except for any new games on this next gen console. Definitely misleading to say it’s series x compatible when it’s not. You can only play old previous gen games off it. Any new game that’s truly made for the series x cannot be played. You’ll get an error message saying the game csn be moved to the external drive, but it will be unplayable.I’ve reached out to bestbuy and the manufacturer and am not happy with the results so far. They both tell me “it should work,” but if you do a little research you will realize no it wont. Yes it will run older games, but not the new ones.I just want to return it and get a refund as this item is marketed in a misleading way. It says in the fine print on the box that this thing is PS5 compatible but can only store PS4 games, which was disappointing, but it turns out that's not accurate -- I tested it and was able to move a PS5 game from the system to the external drive and back again with no issues (you can't run PS5 games off the drive, you can only store them -- but that's true of every external drive). And of course it can also store and run PS4 games. My guess is the packaging was designed sometime last year or early this year, before the PS5 got the system update to allow PS5 games to be stored externally, and they just never updated the packaging. It's decently fast for an HDD. Obviously snail-paced compared to SSDs but the point of buying a drive like this is capacity and affordability, not speed. A 4 or 5 TB external SSD would probably cost much more than the PS5 itself, if you could even find one.Note that my 5 star value rating is in part because I was able to buy it when it was discounted to $100. Its normal MSRP is $150 and I'm pretty sure you can find comparably-sized options for cheaper than that.
Picked up this drive for my teenager for Christmas so they could install more games (the gaming laptop they have only has a 500GB internal drive). It worked great, speed was fine, no stuttering or lagging when they played games like Apex Legends or GTA V or Valorant installed on this external drive.Problem is that after about 30 days drive stopped working. Seems to be a critical failure. Now I get it, this happens happens, and 99% of the time if you are going to have a HD failure it will be within the first 30 days of use (as a result of manufacturing defect) or after the 5-7 year mark (when it simply just wears out).I'm just kicking myself because I have lost the receipt and this purchase was like the ONE TIME that I declined having an electronic receipt ... MorePicked up this drive for my teenager for Christmas so they could install more games (the gaming laptop they have only has a 500GB internal drive). It worked great, speed was fine, no stuttering or lagging when they played games like Apex Legends or GTA V or Valorant installed on this external drive.Problem is that after about 30 days drive stopped working. Works great as an external game drive. Just be sure to KEEP YOUR RECEIPT because if it fails it will fail relatively soon and still be under warranty.I'm going to end up buying another one despite the failure. I figure now that the odds are ever in my favor.
I own two of these P10 drives, 5 TB capacity, purchased 2 years ago and 3 years ago respectively. They were purchased as a place to temporarily move large amounts of media for active editing projects, a backup drive. They seemed to work well for this function but *both* have gotten extremely slow over time -- to the point where they're impractical to use. At best, I get 45MB/sec write speeds -- but during copies it drops to 10 MB/s.. 2 MB/s.. down to 0 then pops back up.. fluctuates a lot.. and then sometimes is even disconnecting mid-copy and re-connecting!They are both formatted exFAT. I'm attempting to defrag one and it's going VERY slowly -- hopefully this might help. But overall I'm very disappointed that both drives are so incredibly slow and becoming unusable.
As someone who owns the PS5 and Xbox Series S these WD Black External HDDs are a great addition to your gaming setup but just remember you can’t play next-gen games off of these. This especially affects owners of the Xbox Series S. The console has 364gb of storage. Putting this into perspective, Forza Horizon 5 is 102gbs and Flight Simulator is 142gbs. 244gbs of 364 for just 2 games optimized for the new consoles. Personally, I’d say these HDDs are good if you want to play a ton of backwards compatible games as they can be played off the HDDs so you can kinda sorta save space but lots of older gen games aren’t huge space hogs anyway. However, this is more of a short-term fix than a long-term fix. However, this is more of a short-term fix than a long-term fix. As the new generation continues to ramp up over the next couple years and newer games that can only be played on the newer tech release you’ll have 2 choices.1. Continuously transfer the newer games to and from the HDD (just so you don’t have to delete them)2. Put the money you’d spend on an HDD and put it towards the Seagate insertable SSDs which will give you more space for newer gen games.Obviously, everyone’s needs are going to be different and not everyone will play games that are 100+ GBs and not every next-gen game is going to be over 100gbs, but if you don’t need tons of storage space oralso don’t want to continuously transfer next-gen games you could invest in the 512gb Seagate SSD for $179.99 or the 1TB Seagate SSD for $279.99 (these prices are CDN) Then purchase an External HDD to hold newer gen games you aren’t currently playing but may want to revisit later. At the end of the day it’s up to you and your needs of gaming. Just remember these externals can’t play next-gen games but can hold them so you don’t have to delete and re-download them.
I have a Series S and I bought the 2TB version at a local Walmart. It was really easy to use and install, but the only thing wrong or misidentified part of the product is it shows while setting up it only has 1.8TB of storage added. It wasn't a huge bummer though, I imagine it must be really hard to get the exact number of digital storage needed. the quality of the hard drive itself is by my standers excellent. for 2TB it's really cheap too. overall, if your looking for a cheap, easy to install and amazing hard drive altogether, you might want to consider the WD_BLACK P10.
This external usb drive is a lot in a small package. With plug in play feature, you're coping and transfering data, pictures, videos, and even large game files within minutes. I personally use mine to store PS4 and PS5 games on it, but if i wanted i have the option to play my PS4 right from the drive. Now that's fast, especially with most games being 4k navitive. Western Digital went above and beyond with this 3.2 hand held storage drive. This is the fastest writing true external hard drive to date, and the price is unbeatable in comparison to other major brands.
INSTALLATION & CONFIGURATIONThe Western Digital P10 can be used as either an XBOX expansion drive, or as an external hard drive for your PC. Initial set-up was impressively simple. Both my Windows 10 PC and my XBOX recognized and configured the drive instantly with nothing needed other than plugging it in. I did not have to enter Disk Management in Windows 10 to configure any options. The drive was properly formatted and ready for use right out of the box.The drive requires a single USB-A style connection. This sole connection provides for both data and power. I tested and installed the drive on a USB 3.0 port on my PC and on the XBOX One X. Western Digital touts the P10 as having a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface. I tested and installed the drive on a USB 3.0 port on my PC and on the XBOX One X. Western Digital touts the P10 as having a USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface. For those unfamiliar with the new naming conventions (who isn’t), it boils down to this: The USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface is nothing more than the original USB 3.0 interface, renamed. It is the successor to USB 2.0 and can transfer data up to 5Gb/s vs. the 480Mb/s limitation of USB 2.0.USEThe P10 transferred multiple rounds of test files and data without issue. Both read and write speeds were consistent and nearly identical to Western Digital’s speed claims of up to 140MB/s (which translates to approximately 1.1 Gb/s). Digging into Windows 10 policy settings and changing the drive from its default state of Quick Removal to Better Performance yielded negligible improvements in speed. Results posted with the review reflect speeds achieved using the Better Performance policy setting within Windows 10.While 140MB/s is not a dismal number, it falls WAY short of the limit of the USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface. Opening the drive up, reveals the reason for the bandwidth limitation. The drive contained within the enclosure is a normal 5400rpm, 2.5-inch laptop hard drive. A drive with this spindle speed will be unable to fully utilize the theoretical limit of the interface it is connected to. Because of this limitation, this drive is unable to support XBOX Series X optimized games. Series X games will need transferred from this drive to the internal HDD for the user to experience the full Series X enhancements.FINAL THOUGHTSWhile this drive works admirably well for what it is, I find it hard to give it a glowing recommendation. Western Digital charges a premium for this drive compared to other WD and competitors’ drives with similar specs and performance (though this drive includes 1 free month of XBOX Game Pass). What seals this review, is Western Digital has gone out of its way to market their Black drives as a premium alternative, that is equal to, or better than any of its competitors. Look up any advertising for the Black products and Western Digital will tell you how great their Black products are compared to the competition. I found nothing that qualifies the P10 to earn the Black badge. The P10 is an external storage device that contains the same style hard drive my laptops had 10 years ago.Had this drive been marketed differently or priced more competitively, I may have reconsidered my review. But, due to Western Digital’s own propaganda, I expect a Black badged product to perform above and beyond its competition. This product does not.
