Should provide 800 hours of HD recording according to Directv. This drive is designed to be able to record and stream I believe up to 24 HD cameras at the same time and eliminate lagging and frame drop. So far I have run 5 1080p cameras on this drive without degradation. Except with my software, each camera uses about 2MB/sec write speed to drive, so 5 is only 10 MB/sec writing. I intentionally avoided using benchmark numbers with this review because I feel they're a misrepresentation of what this drive intends to do and how it operates in the real world under its intended application. While you technically can get a better drive, benchmark-wise, it won't always perform as well due to firmware features the Purple line implements. This drive is designed around the idea of caching streams so you don't incur drops and it does that well. The WD Purple basically performs like a NAS drive until its firmware kicks in with features to help balance surveillance workloads. This is not a good drive for storage NAS, access and write times will be less optimal and sensors that help balance RAID loads are absent here. This is definitely not a good drive ... This is definitely not a good drive for desktops or OS drives as everything will be less than optimal in that performance arena. Depending on what type of performance you want this may not be the drive for you. Seagate's surveillance drives, for instance, off better specific scenario performances, particularly in writing and RAID setups. WD chose to go with a more balanced approach in which it doesn't win many real benchmark battles but it does achieve a respectable balance between everything. This is definitely a good starter drive if you don't know where to start and don't have a crazy high end and demanding surveillance system, and if you do know what you're doing but have a smaller system this drive shouldn't disappoint you, either.

I got many hours of solid video recording out of it before this review, and only had a few bad frames and luckily those were not critical to security or privacy. If you want to use this strictly for video recording it is a great solution. (Which is what it is branded as.) If you want to use it to store random other data, beware that it is designed as as a video recording drive and will likely drop random bits of data that corrupts files. Definitely do not use it to back up anything critical -especially install programs of heirloom photos. Otherwise, very solid drive for what it is.

In terms of physical aspects, this drive has everything needed for most applications. It has all of the standard mounting holes, the standard SATA power and data connections, as well as jumper pins that can be used to enable certain compatibility modes. The HDD label sticker is one of the easiest to read I have come across; all the useful information is present and easy to find. In terms of performance, this drive performed better than I was expecting. CrystalDiskMark benchmarked the drive with sequential read and write speeds of around 150MB/s while empty and around 100MB/s while 80% full. When transferring files to the drive I noticed an average of about 108MB/s. Being a surveillance drive, this drive also supports some of the streaming standards which aid with ... When transferring files to the drive I noticed an average of about 108MB/s. Being a surveillance drive, this drive also supports some of the streaming standards which aid with video playback while still writing new video to the drive. But, I have a hard time figuring out what modern applications this drive would be a logical choice in. The low 500GB capacity would be fine for a system with low resolution cameras or a system with very few HD cameras, however, the price jump to the 1TB version of this drive (at the time of writing this review) is only a few dollars. With such a small price jump for double the storage, I struggle to come up with a situation where I would rather use this 500GB version than a 1TB version. Overall, this is a good drive that would serve well in a small surveillance environment. The problems with this drive only appear when the rest of the market is taken into account. With higher capacity drives, with the same features, priced at almost the same price point, the appeal of this drive really starts to fade.
There is not much to write about HD like this. Now knowing that HD’s are going the route of DVDs/Blue Ray discs, thanks to SSD’s continually improving. Now I am not saying HD’s will not have their place, they do and that place is now going to exactly as a secondary and not primary drive in most systems, besides specific built systems. All these new HD’s that are being seen for energy, performance, and purpose built tasks are in essence marketing tactics. Now I am not saying that all the features are worthless but nevertheless if you put one of these HD’s and do basic benchmarks you see they perform same as standard HD’s for desktops, at times worse at times better. What they are selling in this case is that these drives are optimized for the mass writes and the type of writes. In all honesty I am pretty sure that these drives are same as NAS drives, all you care about is a drive to be able to run 24/7 with good performance to power ratio, and be able to last a long time doing so. I think the biggest selling points to these drives is ability to write and read for streaming without the drive getting hung up, as you see at times with regular desktop drives where you do some writing and try to do some reading and one or the other will take a major hit, pair that with advertised for 4x the write per month it is easy to see why the consumer would jump on this over other 24/7 drives. With all that said, the 500Gb drive is too expensive, and would probably go into system with few cameras and or lower then 1080p, that or expect to only record and keep files for short time. I would recommended to always do the price per gig comparison and buy the most storage you can afford and based on the number of drives for the system, usually this is some mid-range that is the sweet spot.
The unit came very quickly, was well packed and very easy to instal. Just two plugs and four screws. It then formatted itself on power up without me having to do anything. It is now working perfectly and because its designed for 24/7 use Ive no doubt it will work for many years to come. I was tempted to buy a new recorder as the old hard drive kept working intermittently. But this new unit has cured all of the problems. Warwick Kemp.
WD Purples are the standard drives factory-installed in most of the surveillance recorders we buy. Since OEMs are very sensitive to warranty issues, the fact they have faith in these drives suggests reliability. Purple drives implement TLER (time-limited error recovery) like the WD Reds, so they should also be appropriate for NVRs with RAID cards without risk of premature disk drop-out if bad sectors are encountered. Also implements ATA streaming commands ("AllFrame") to programmatically set an upper bound on read or write times, quickly failing long reads/writes in order to keep up with the overall stream (I don't know if any NVRs actually support this feature, however). My regular (three-letter) hard disk retailer was out of stock, so I just started buying hard drives from Newegg again and was pleasantly surprised to find that they were very well packaged. (I had originally switched to the other online retailer years ago because they packaged their drives well and Newegg did not.) they packaged their drives well and Newegg did not.)
I got the second drive to add to my NVR and had to find screws to mount it. I went to ACE hardware and get four 6/32 thread 1/4 inch long screws. I went on Ebay and got a data cable to plug it in to main board. The power cable was built into main board and did not need it. After doing a format of the harddrive it was worked great. It doubled the record time. The reason it did not come with screws or data cable is because the drives were mainly sold for replacement of original drive. When you call Lorex they do not really tell you this. They told me I could get the screws at Best Buy or Costco. Forget that. Its to bad their sales people do not know the products. But all in all it worked out GREAT.
I just installed this hard drive in my CCTV. So far, it's working well. I formatted it a couple of times, and everything went smoothly. Let's see how long it lasts. The last one lasted for 6 years before it failed.
If I ever needed more storage for my surveillance cameras, I would consider purchasing a WD Purple drive. This drive is so large that I do not expect to need to buy another drive for a while. Please be aware that this drive is a surveillance drive. Surveillance drives are designed to record video with no frame loss. They are more tolerant of errors so they can maintain recording. When a drive performs error correction it stops writing to correct the error. If a surveillance drive stopped recording, it may miss the important details you need. Do not use this drive as your main system drive or to store pictures, music, games, etc. Drives designed for multiple types of data will be much faster and will actually perform error correction to protect your data. Do your homework and you will be much happier with your purchase.
