4TB My Book Stops working on iMac

Our 4TB My Book worked well for quite awhile on our iMac desktop. Showed no signs or issues until we were no longer able to access the contents. Fortunately I do have most of the files backed up elsewhere, but would be real nice if this one was still accessible. That way I could be sure of having all of my files. Have replaced this drive with a hopefully higher quality professional model. Stinks that it was out of warranty. this was the first time we have had any problem with WD products.

Don't buy this piece of crap!!!!

IF I COULD GIVE LESS THAN ONE STAR, I WOULD GIVE IT A MINUS 10!!!!!I have used WD products before. THIS IS A PIECE OF CRAP!!!!! Loaded everything into it and it will not start again on any of my 6 computers!!!!! You should be ashamed of yourselves. I'll never buy a product from your company again. Sticking with SEAGATE!!!!

I cannot fathom why anyone would make a USB 3.0 device, then cram a junk 5400rpm drive in it...but here it is. This thing is SO slow. I bought the 18TB model, and actually filled it almost completely up with backup data....only took several days to do so, which is not acceptable for me. This drive is also extremely noisy, and sounds like it is grinding, so it will be for backup only, and not ever hold any critical information. I only bought this drive because it was inexpensive, but I should have known better, so that's on me. On another note, this thing is not compatible with Roku, which only decreases its usefulness that much more. Also runs considerably warmer than my other drives from another vendor...

Great drives and GREAT price.

Got 3 18TB mybooks for a crazy low price each from the wd store (dunno how I got that price, maybe the store was screwed up that day but I jumped). They are simple to plug in, fast, and you can disable sleep mode. The only thing about the 18TB versions are they are LOUD. They do click/make a noise every 5 seconds (one is a click when the drive does it's 5 second access because something in the case is lose and you can tell it's the top plastic piece making the click). All of the mybooks are designed to make a noise every 5 seconds to "lubricate" stuff according to the faq here. The extra warranty making them have a 4 year warranty was even better. OH and these are 7200RPM drives in the case, probably white label red's. OH and these are 7200RPM drives in the case, probably white label red's. I also have 4 14's and one of those is 7200 (the rest are 5400) so i would guess it's a crap shoot what they decide to slap in there but my 18's are 7200 and fast over usb 3.1. If I see the low offer show up again I'm going to get one more and max out my drive letters. I find these more reliable than the brand that starts with see and ends with gate (the warranty on those is a year and they stuff in enterprise class drives where if you bought them bare you get a 3 year warranty and they wont honor the drive S/N, just the chassis SN). I don't know how WD handles shucked drives (none of mine are shucked) but I read that they dont complain and replace them. I'll stick with WD, never had much trouble with them. Again, they're fast, long warranty and the only complaint is they're noisy but what can you do. You can't go wrong with the brand, quality or price.

Perfect for Backups
4 January 2022

My current drive I was using for backups, the WD 14 TB drive, was running out of space. So, I wanted an additional 18TB drive for backups. Works perfectly for what I need. Using it in a studio, I wouldn't have picked this drive if I needed to use it daily for my work. (I currently use 10 external drives) I am not really sure of its speed. It is strange that WD does not advertise the speed of the drive and data flow. They leave it out of their specs. I assume they do that purposely. I also could not find the specs anywhere on the internet. Anyway, for my purpose (backups), it is perfect. Also, pricing it along side other competitor drives, it was significantly cheaper, at least 30% cheaper. For the price point, I couldn't pass is up.

This drive is worthless

A waste of $250. I bought the 12 TB to replace an old WD Elements that was full. I wish I'd stuck with the Elements model. The My Book has been nothing but a pain. Despite settings on both my computer and my drive to stop it from sleeping, I'm constantly unable to access the content of my drive. The drive itself is running, and shows up on my computer, but if it's idol long enough to go to sleep the next time I try to use it I'm unable to few any of the files. I have to eject the whole drive. I've already had it replaced once, about to replace the second drive now which has the exact same issue. I've spent so much time on the phone with customer services with no solution. I wish I could just get a refund or exchange it for the Elements model, but they won't do ... MoreA waste of $250. Very disappointed with My Book
7 March 2023

This My Book was not "plug and play". Once out of the box, it took me about 30 minutes to get it to appear in Desk Utility, which made me suspicious, but I went ahead and began saving my files to it. I ejected it but have now spent several days trying to get it to reappear in Desk Utility which I have not been able to do. So basically all my files are on an external hard drive that I can't open to delete the files so I can return it. Don't buy this. There's nothing convenient or efficient about it.

Works flawless for me
17 January 2023

If you need a simple home server for streaming media files and sharing documents between users in a home network, this is just perfect. I know that there are more features such as accessing de server from the Internet but I do not need these. I use the Twonkey DLNA server which works very well with our smart TV. We are on Linux and 2 PC's are mounting this home server as an external drive for maintenance and archiving. I also like the energy saving feature which spins down the drive after some idle time. This saves energy and is preventing wearing out equipment. As I never had any problem at all I can recommend this for simple home server use.

exFAT affects booting on some system; loud
4 August 2022

After I plugged this into my target system (Windows 10), the system simply cannot boot up. If I unplugged it during booting and then plug it in afterward, then it works fine. This also boots OK in another system that I tried. Checking the various forum, some suggest to change it from exFAT to NTSC. Once I did that, then it boots fine. It is still a mystery what that disk format make. Anyway, back to the disk, it is certainly loud on booting and disk access. You can hear the clicking even if you are 10 ft away and it is much louder than the 10TB Element that it replaced. Since this is a drive for backup (meaning it is not accessed unless I run the backup software), I can tolerate it. I also put a piece of foam padding underneath to dampen the noise.
