Another great WD portable

I've been using WD portable hard drives since 2005 when I bought a 60 GB drive to use for backups. Today, you can get more storage than that on an SD card, so times have changed. Every few years as my storage needs change I go out and buy the latest WD portable that fits my budget (the $75-150 range). Currently that is the My Passport Ultra. The reason I chose the Ultra over the vanilla My Passport is the USB-C port. My wife and I are both Mac users and our current laptops are USB-C only. I'm so tired of dongles and adapters to deal with USB-A connections, this just plugs right in and works. Extra points to WD for including a snap-on C-to-A adapter. I have never had a single WD portable drive fail on me, ever. That 60GB portable lasted over a decade before I replaced it with a 128GB model. When I got my first Ultra, since I wanted the faster USB3 transfers I gave away four old USB2 portables I bought around 2010 and all were working fine. I give WD the highest marks for reliability. I also appreciate that WD has a recycling program where they will take your old drives (any brand) for free and give you a discount coupon you can use for future WD purchases. All in all, I highly recommend this drive for anyone who doesn't need SSD speeds.

Lost 2 drives in last couple of months

This is seriously concerning in itself. Passports just not cutting it without WD back-up s
23 September 2024

I always counted on WD passport drives. One of the main reasons was the ease and simplicity if their backup software. I discovered this after purchasing several new passports. I work with a lot of seniors that are not computer savvy. So maybe they are only saving a billion pictures of their pets or the grandkids, it was simple and should someone become confused I could always walk them through whatever fix was necessary. The list of backup software WD provides just doesn’t provide the simplicity needed for the non-technical individual . There really isn’t a reason to recommend passports any longer.

The WD 5TB My Passport Ultra USB 3.0 Type-C External Hard Drive for Mac offers substantial storage capacity in a sleek, portable design. Its USB 3.0 and Type-C compatibility ensures fast data transfer speeds and easy connectivity with modern Mac systems. The drive comes pre-formatted for macOS and includes WD Discovery software for easy backups and security features. However, some users might find the bundled software redundant if they already use Apple's native solutions. Overall, it's a reliable choice for those needing ample storage with convenient Mac integration.

Sorry I Made This Purchase

This purchase was a big mistake by me. WD used to provide great hardware and software to help individuals safely and securely back up their home systems. No more. While the hardware may be fine, the Acronis software and installation was a nightmare on my new Windows 11 Dell computer. The software installation failed several times with Windows 11error messages about file security, etc. It was only on my 3rd attempt that the software installed even still with the OS error messages. The Acronis backup setup was VERY confusing and not user friendly at all. After some period of time I was able to actually see and understand what dir. and files were being backed up. But then while testing to make sure changed files were backed up, I found you could not even see the backup files on the drive w/o going thru some technical hoops to be able to read the data. I was so disappointed in WD as I had previously used their drives and backup software with great success. Finally, I was so frustrated with this Acronis software and lack of user friendliness, that I chucked the whole drive in the trash and went out and purchased a Seagate 2tb drive and software that works perfectly and is very user friendly. This experience was a total waste of time and money for me.

WD My Passport Ultra for Mac…

I purchased the above drive to replace a failed Time Machine drive attached to my Mac Mini. The print on the box that the drive came in stated that the drive was formatted for Mac, which it was not. It was formatted NTFS and came with software to install on the Mac so it would write to a NTFS formatted drive. I reformatted the drive, Or I should say the Mac reformatted the drive to work with Time Machine. I have the drive connected to one of the USB ports on my 2020 Mac Mini running Mac OS Sonoma 14.1. I have been trying for 3 days for the Time Machine backup to complete, this drive is very, very slow. I would NOT recommend this drive for Time Machine backups at the moment. All the reviews I read recommended this drive for Time Machine backups, but the box does not state it is compatible with Time Machine and it only states that the drive is Mac OS 11+ compatible. But this experience has changed my mind and I may never purchase another WD hard drive again! If this backup ever completes I will attempt to move it to a USB-C port to see if that helps any.

[Rewarded Review] Has issues with my HP Omen PC
3 February 2024

I have tried a couple of the WD My Passport external drives, with various storage configurations. Have had no problems installing the hardware device. But on this machine, the drive continues to drop from a ready state (i.e. the USB connection drops, then reconnects 10 to 15 seconds later). Sometimes this actually kills the backup. It does generate many requests to scan the drive for issues, each time it drops). Curiously, the problem does not occur on my Laptop, but that is not where I keep the files I need to backup. I recently tried a Samsung SSD drive, with no problems. I have exhausted all the solutions from online trouble shooting suggestions, with no success.
