I purchased this device to replace my 1 TB. After a few months, it started not showing up on my PC. I thought maybe it was the cable. I had to switch the cable out two times as it would work for a bit and then go back to not being recognizable. No, it's doing it again. This time, I had WD send me a cable to make sure it wasn't my cables. It's definitely not. It's their hard drive. And of course, now my device is out of warranty. This is so frustrating as I have lost all my data. The whole purpose of this was to make sure I didn't lose my data to a laptop malfunctioning it was supposed to save my data so that I can access from anywhere if my laptop failed but of course now I can't I have my school worked saved on there, Now I can't access any of it. Getting people's data or fixing their devices. Shame on you for selling product that doesn't work properly. There should be a class action lawsuit against you guys for this terrible product. The device is only two years old, I have other devices that are older than this that are still going and working properly. Do better WD.

I've only had this drive for 3 months and as others have reported, the drive, all of the sudden, is not recognized by my computer. I bought a new cable, even though I knew that wasn't the problem since I tried cables that were working with other drives and tried this drive in 2 other computers with the same outcome - nothing. Sometimes the disk was listed in Device Manager, but still not in File Explorer - other times it didn't show up anywhere. In Disk Management, if it showed up at all, it was listed as "disk not initialized". I found that if I unplugged the drive for a couple of hours and then plugged it back in, once in awhile it would be recognized and I would quickly move as many files as I could to another drive - before it disappeared again. After many hours of playing this game I was finally able to save all my files. For some reason, the drive decided to stay detectable for a few hours and during that time I did all the scans I could think of which all reported a perfect working disk. I ended up doing a complete format of the disk and it stayed detectable for a day, or so, but is now gone again. Please, for anyone reading these reviews . . . DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!

I have an iMac running OS 10.13.6 and was able to use the Apple Disk Utility to format the Easystore drive for a Mac. I then did a OS X restore onto the Easystore drive from a WD 512GB Flash Card I use for Time Machine Backups (i.e. hold Command - R after restart and choose the Easystore Drive as the destination drive for the restore). That gives you a second bootable hard drive with a copy of all your content on it. The restart required to complete the restore process will boot the computer up from the Easystore drive. I was surprised that running the iMac from the USB external drive seemed to be as fast as using the internal drive. The point being, it is great to have a fully bootable drive with all your content on it, just in case your internal drive ever crashes irreparably. You won't lose the functionality of your computer, or your content, if that happens. The 5 TB drive would actually be a nice step up from the 1 TB internal drive that came with the computer. This is an awesome, must-have product, if you truly value your iMac and your content.

If you have a Mac or MacBook and want a simple external storage device then this NOT the product for you.Basically what I want from a hard drive is to plug it in and start dragging files into it. Should be a simple process that takes seconds.Despite being literally called "EASYSTORE" this is a painstaking process. It is more designed to use its backup software (which requires internet for some reason?) to backup your computer or hard drive. Rather than a simple storage device.Even AFTER installing the driver software on the drive, I still cannot drag and drop files onto the drive. Not from WD. Not in the instructions. THAT'S RIDICULOUS. Waste of time and money, just buy another hard drive that works straight out of the box.
I love WD products since back in early 2000's.I bought this external 5TB hdd as another hdd for my wife's business scans.I would have given a 5 star rating but what happened below is not worth any stars but have to leave at least 1.As like the other reviews, this drive is amazing until it is not.All of a sudden a few days ago it decided it does not want to be discovered by the computer it has been attached to this entire time.I downloaded the wd diagnostic tool and still is undiscovered.I tried updating drivers from wd to no avail, still undiscoverable.Rebooting system as needed for every update, still undiscoverable. Finally, I attached it to a different computer in the house and IT WORKED! Pretty disappointed. I bought this in October 2021. It got used maybe a total of 5-6 times as I only use it to back up my iPhone once or twice a yesr. It never was moved anywhere. Always sat on the desk. I Went to use it the other day and it’s making Clicking noise noises and will not mount to the desktop. It had a two-year warranty, so unfortunately Western Digital would not offer any support or replacement. I would be more forgiving if it was a drive that was with me on the go constantly and was getting regular use but After only a handful of uses and remaining sedentary, not acceptable.

I purchased this 5TB portable hard drive to use as my main storage drive that runs a Plex Media Server, and has a torrent client running 24/7. Please note this is not my only backup, and I have a second WD Passport that has a copy of all my files that I use as cold storage - unplugged and sitting on my desk. I did not have the space or money to setup an actual NAS or 3.5" hard drives, so decided to go with this portable option for the price and portability. So far, things have been decent. I haven't had any real problems with this drive. As of today, CrystalDiskInfo shows that there are ZERO reallocated sectors (bad sectors) after being powered on for 2,439 hours, and powered on a total of 76 times. I haven't had any real problems with this drive. As of today, CrystalDiskInfo shows that there are ZERO reallocated sectors (bad sectors) after being powered on for 2,439 hours, and powered on a total of 76 times. So it hasn't failed yet after 3 months. The main drawback to this drive is the speed - it is only a 4800 RPM drive - slower than your typical laptop hard drive, much slower than a 3.5" 7200 RPM drive, and much, MUCH slower than a modern SSD or m.2 drive. You can see in my CrystalDiskMark results that average read/write rates are 40 MB/s with 4TB of data written to the drive. But it performs okay - I never have issues using Plex on my devices, but that's only from a single device. You may run into issues when running multiple streams. Also the drive can slow down a bit if you're trying to write a bunch of data and at the same time read a bunch of data (like you're downloading files from a torrent client, while the torrent client is also checking the hash of other files). But the drive remains responsive - if I pause a transfer then I immediately can perform other functions. Just something to be aware of.Idle temperatures are in the mid 30's C, and in testing 1GB being written the temp only rose to 40 C. Temps ran high when straight writing data to it (3TB of data) when I first got it - hovering around 70 C. The case does not have any ventilation so this could be an issue if you're heavily using this drive (premature failure due to heat). The last issue with this drive is that it CANNOT be shucked, and if the USB/SATA interface ever fails then you won't be able to pull data off of the drive since it is hard soldered to the motherboard inside the enclosure.Overall, this is a decent drive - as long as you understand the limitations and don't use this as a long term storage plan. For me it's cheap storage that will hold files until I can get a NAS or some 3.5" drives set up. Using this as a game drive for a PS4 or Xbox, or even to hold Steam games isn't a bad idea. If you buy this drive to store valuable or precious data, you should buy a second one of the same size so you can have a backup if anything goes wrong. My WD Passport failed and was replaced under warranty, so it's something that does happen - it just hasn't happened to this drive yet. I wish I could give this 3.5/5 stars.

I am concerned as I have a lot of important data on it, and I cannot transfer the data to another drive because it causes my laptop to crash. It has not even been a year since I purchased the drives, and I believe that the store or WD should be responsible for such a defect. I hope you can assist me in resolving this issue.
This 5tb WD Easystore external hard drive was great value based on price and company reputation. Im also a fan of Seagate hard drives but the metal on Seagate's gets very cold and I ignotlrantly question longterm external hard drive health bc of that. My PC once stopped recognizing a WD hard drive but when after copying to another WD. I always recommend backing inportant data with 2 external hard drives but have had good results with WD and Seagate. Store pickup was smooth. Thanks
