I bought this WD Elements 6TB drive for attaching to a Synology DS220J NAS as a backup service. My DS220J NAS uses DSM (DiskStation Manager) V7.1, which supports backing up of the NAS contents to a USB locally-connected drive. It was important for me to install a local backup service for my DS220J NAS, because I use it as a local cloud facility for storing application files. This is instead of storing these files locally on individual computers and using the NAS itself as backup. This arrangement allows me to share application files across several computers, i.e. the DS220J NAS acts as a central storage facility for all network computers. The WD Elements drive is woken-up and put to sleep by the DSM software, as required for the backup schedule. As the WD Elements drive is only active for 20-30 minutes, twice a day, purchasing a WD Red disk was not necessary.

After a week of detailed formatting of one of your 16 Tb machines, I found it operated perfectly. I installed about 5 Tb of my data for the past 20+ years and ran it with no problem. I soon bought one of your 18 Tb units, detail-formatted it in a day (using a faster home computer) and copied the same date to it. I now have two machines which PROBABLY will operate forever without any problem; but, if one fails, the other will compensate. Two machines also allow me to work simultaneously on my two Windows and Ubuntu home computers. I am an experienced WD owned, who previously was using two 5-Tb "Easystore" units for my backups, but they were almost entirely full. Before them, I was using a 2 Tb and a 4 Tb Seagate machine. The "Yes" "No" buttons above don't really allow for a proper summary. The drive itself is good quality, I cannot fault it, it works great. However the power adaptor is not good quality. I have 2 of these drives now, my first one came with a power adaptor made in Cambodia which is good quality and no issues. However, the adaptor that came with this one is cheap made in China garbage, comes with a slip-on adaptor that goes over the 2 prongs so it'll fit Australian plugs. It will not stay in the power outlet plug when the outlet is vertical mounted, like on a wall or vertical mounted powerboard. It keeps disconnecting the drive from the computer because of loss of power. The only way to use it so it works correctly is have the plug/powerboard it goes into horizontal. ... MoreThe "Yes" "No" buttons above don't really allow for a proper summary. Probably a cost cutting excercise by WD I guess, as a lot of these companies seem to do, but all they've done is made the total product worse for consumers by swapping to this cheap power adaptor. Would I purchase again? No, not if it comes with the same adaptor I received with this one.

I've been reading through the reviews of these Elements drives and have taken particular notice of the critical ones. All I can say is that I guess I've gotten lucky...4 TIMES! I have 2 My Book 8TB ( purchased in 2019 ), one My Book 4TB ( purchased in 2018 ), and this, my most recent purchase, an Elements 6TB ( 2022 ). Unfortunately, I started having issues with it a month ago so I contacted WD. Customer service was prompt and attentive. A tech called ME and walked me through some diagnostics ( most of which I had already done ) and it was determined that I should receive a replacement. The turn around time was 10 days which was a bit of a pain since my other back-up drives were full because of all of those files transferred from the Elements drive before I returned it, but I understand why that can't ship the replacement before inspecting the return first. In any case, the new drive is working well so far, and I by comparison, I can definitely tell there was a problem with the first one from the beginning. It HAPPENS SOMETIMES! And based on my experience with my other WD drives which not only include those already mentioned, but 2 Black internal drives ( 2TB and 8TB ) as well as an Ultrastar 10TB, I must say that I'm extremely happy my products overall, and my only experience with the return process was a positive one.
If you just want a drive, sure. The quality of the enclosure is absent. If you hold it, chances are the top and bottom of the enclosure will make a click sound as it shifts out of place by a decent amount. If you are a perfectionist, you don't want the enclosure visible on your desk, the cheap plastic moulding along the top is not straight and smooth and under certain lighting angles it is very visible. I am surprised, the enclosure is disposable af. I guess most people want the drive and WD don't want to sell cheap drives to enterprises so this is their way of providing a non enterprise friendly drive for cheap. I.e. the enclosure is just packaging.
The drive is nice for the price and meets my needs but transfer speeds are slow. Info states that using usb 3.0 transfer speeds up to 5GB/s are possible. I am not getting anywhere near those speeds. I have a Dell XPS 15 9500 with 32GB of RAM and two SSDs with a total of 3TB of memory. My 1TB ssd is dedicated to the operating system and the 2TB ssd is for everything else. My thunderport USB-C ports are supposed to be capable of up to 10 GB/s transfer. Since the element didn't come with a usb-c cable I had to buy one. The cable I bought is rated the same as the Elements at 5 gb/s. When transfering files from a sandisk extreme pro sdxc card I am only getting 85 mb/s. Pros: Western Digital produce by far the most reliable hard drives I've ever purchased. Not that I'd want to tempt fate talking about reliability but I still have their hard drives from ten years ago. I purchased this one to support the memory of my PS4. Once unboxed and connect to my PS4 it took moments to format and began transfering all my game data to the WD 8tb drive. Over a course of a week thanks to its size I was able to install over 40 titles without making a dent in its capacity. A WD 8tb hard drive is an excellent investment. In a world where prices keeping going up for less goods than you needed , it's great to see a WD hard drive of this size and quality for the price of a significantly smaller and lesser quality one. Worth the investment. Cons: No ... MorePros: Western Digital produce by far the most reliable hard drives I've ever purchased. WD 4TB Elements Desktop - WDBWLG0040HBK-NESN I have been in the market for a desktop hard drive for some time, after my other one stopped working and I lost all the content on it. After hearing and reading rave reviews about the Western Digital brand, I decided to go with their WD 4TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - WDBWLG0040HBK-NESN. I really didn't need 4TB of space, but for the price, it was well worth. I loved how it was an easy plug and play ready for Windows PCs, as I wasn't ready to give up hours of my time to read through instructions or follow lengthy step by step instructions to get the WD 4TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - WDBWLG0040HBK-NESN up and running. I couldn't believe just how fast the data transfers were. Now I can free up a bunch of space on my computer with the use of the WD 4TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive - WDBWLG0040HBK-NESN and it makes my computer run much faster. And, I don't have to worry about losing important files and documents as they are backed up and stored in no time with this high-capacity storage unit from Western Digital. If you have been looking for a desktop hard drive, I highly recommend the WD 4TB Elements Desktop Hard Drive. This is also a must for gamers who use XBox and PS4 and need extra storage.
Cons: I bought this 10Tb WD Elements Drive as a desktop storage attached directly to my Windows 11 PC. While I can see the disk in File Explorer and can move/copy files to it using File Explorer the WD Discovery Backup/restore software is useless. It cannot find the drive so you can't use the drive as a backup/restore resource. WD also provide Acronis backup software which I downloaded, updated and ran. This told me that there were Disk errors and to run ChkDsk which I did and needless to say there are no disc errors with the brand new drive. I have tried again but I am unable to use the Acronis software to backup either. So all I can use the disc for is manually copying files across or use the Win 11 Backup which is pretty dreadful too.
The crappy warranty is why I gave this drive 4 stars and not 5 stars. The drive is fast, for both sequential reads and writes of large files (which is how I am using the drive). It will exceed 250 MB/s, if your USB port supports that speed, and if you are feeding it from a storage devices that can send/receive at that speed. I have not tested it for reading and/or writing countless small files. I doubt that it would come close to the speeds noted above. Also, the speeds that I noted above were based on the drive not being asked to do anything else. If you have more than one write or one read operation being asked of the drive, it will not multitask at the speed of an SSD. This drive will probably slow down to a of its speed, if asked to write two large files, ... MoreThe crappy warranty is why I gave this drive 4 stars and not 5 stars. So for doing backups, and simply saving important data, for simple data storage purposes, this drive is great. For all-around performance, look elsewhere. With a 1-year warranty, Western Digital does not have much faith in their drive holding up under the long haul. Lastly, this drive has an activity light on the front, near the bottom. When it is steadily lit, it has both a data and power connection. When it is blinking, then the drive is busy (reading or writing data). The light is easy to see, but it is not bright. Cheers!
