A must-buy if you want more space on Xbox One

I plug this bad boy in the back, expecting miracles, not a lot happened. After running some troubleshooting from WD website, I ran through the fixes to include plugging into the other USB port, which did the trick. I had to google more instructions on how to change the settings to move everything from the device to the hard drive. I went from 89% using internal memory and now about 5% with everything running off the hard drive. A bonus with the purchase is a Xbox 1-month subscription to Gamepass Ulitmate, which ironically enough, I think an xbox would not be able to manage without a memory expansion so that was a nice treat to be able to enjoy the fruit of my labor. If you buy an xbox, please do yourself the favor to buying the biggest-sized WD external harddrive formatted for xbox that you can find.

Anything but a “gaming” drive

This product is marketed as a “game drive”. This is a storage drive and does not have good enough performance to be used for gaming. In fact, according to CrystalDiskInfo, the drive inside it is a 4800 rpm spinning hard drive that gets worse performance than a 7800 rpm spinning hard drive I have installed inside my PC. The only thing fast about this drive is the transfer rate of the interface which is SATA/600 which is overkill for the drive because it wouldn’t even be able to keep up with SATA/300. The only reason I rated it as high as I did is because I was able to repurpose it for something else that isn’t a “gaming” purpose. It has a tough shell exterior so it’ll be traveling in my laptop bag. They could easily have marketed it for that purpose. I’ll keep it but I still need a drive that’s at least SSD level performance.Check out the benchmarks. The proof is is in the pudding so they say. Drive “H” is this WD Black game drive and Drive “I” is an old PNY 120 gig SSD drive connected through USB and shows read speeds massively higher on the PNY. Drive “G” is a 8 terabyte spinning HDD inside my PC that also greatly outperforms this drive. If you’re looking for speed, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a tough traveling companion for your data, it would probably work fine.

The fact that it was "...incredibly easy to install...", had "...ridiculously fast..."transfer rates, and all at an "...affordable..." price tag, means absolutely nothing if it doesn't perform the basic task of allowing me to store and play my games.I have been a Western Digital fan and customer since I built my first computer in 1998. Regrettably, I feel our long-term relationship may be at an end.

Great for storing games but keep this in mind

As someone who owns the PS5 and Xbox Series S these WD Black External HDDs are a great addition to your gaming setup but just remember you can’t play next-gen games off of these. This especially affects owners of the Xbox Series S. The console has 364gb of storage. Putting this into perspective, Forza Horizon 5 is 102gbs and Flight Simulator is 142gbs. 244gbs of 364 for just 2 games optimized for the new consoles. Personally, I’d say these HDDs are good if you want to play a ton of backwards compatible games as they can be played off the HDDs so you can kinda sorta save space but lots of older gen games aren’t huge space hogs anyway. However, this is more of a short-term fix than a long-term fix. However, this is more of a short-term fix than a long-term fix. As the new generation continues to ramp up over the next couple years and newer games that can only be played on the newer tech release you’ll have 2 choices.1. Continuously transfer the newer games to and from the HDD (just so you don’t have to delete them)2. Put the money you’d spend on an HDD and put it towards the Seagate insertable SSDs which will give you more space for newer gen games.Obviously, everyone’s needs are going to be different and not everyone will play games that are 100+ GBs and not every next-gen game is going to be over 100gbs, but if you don’t need tons of storage space oralso don’t want to continuously transfer next-gen games you could invest in the 512gb Seagate SSD for $179.99 or the 1TB Seagate SSD for $279.99 (these prices are CDN) Then purchase an External HDD to hold newer gen games you aren’t currently playing but may want to revisit later. At the end of the day it’s up to you and your needs of gaming. Just remember these externals can’t play next-gen games but can hold them so you don’t have to delete and re-download them.

ONLY DOWNLOADS XBOX ONE GAMES NOT LABELED AS S/X
27 March 2024

This product DOES work for the xbox series s and x. What this hard drive or anybody else in the reviews fails to mention is that it can ONLY support XBOX ONE, XBOX 360, and ORIGINAL XBOX GAMES. You can install xbox x/s games on it, but you CAN NOT play them. If you want a bigger storage for X/S game versions, you need to purchase an INTERNAL hard drive or buy a new xbox series x or s with increased hard drive storage. If you open up the xbox to replace the internal hard drive, you will void the warranty and you will not be able to ever return the console. Its unfortunate but you can ONLY download games that are NOT labeled s/x to this external hard drive.

Stunningly slow "performance" 3.1 MB/s, bye bye WD

The 'Black' series is supposed to be high performance, what happened?! There is terrible performance, and then there are these. The performance is well beyond terrible, it so bad it makes me question reality!I bought 9 of the 5TB version of this drive, and so far 2 of them are so incredibly, unbelievably slow that they are completely useless, they can't even save a word doc. It takes several MINUTES to mount once connected, if they mount at all! Right now as I write this, I am using DD under Linux to copy a 480GB partition to one of the ones that still marginally works, as in it mounts in under a minute. It is 400GB into the copy (after a few days!), although the transfer rate started out at 300+ MB/s as the buffer filled up over USB 3.0... but now. You may question reality too as the transfer speed is in the single digits, a stunningly bad 3.1 (three point one) MB/s. There is simply no excuse for this. DD writes the sectors/tracks sequentially, its not updating the filesystem and going back and writing files... this is the ultimate sequential write.Whoever engineered this junk needs to be publicly reprimanded and barred from engineering anywhere for anything. I've been buying WD for decades and currently own dozens of 8TB+ drives, but I won't be buying WD after this though! The competing brand's products are looking pretty good right now. WD has lost me, especially with the low quality the last year or so.

[Rewarded Review] Drive failed and WD Diagnostics is useless!

Bought 2 of the 5TB WD Black P10 external drives. Using them to back up PC (alternate back & forth to lower risk of losing backups). I always use Macrium Reflect's *verify* setting to make sure the backup file on the external drive is the same as what's on the PC. After 1.5 years one drive doesn't ever make it through a 700GB backup; it always fails to verify. The other drive still works (including verification). I used WD Dashboard software to check the faulty drive thoroughly; it ran for 11 hours and said the drive is perfectly healthy -- no errors detected!

[Rewarded Review] Great memory and durable
29 April 2024

Love, love this! Without extra memory x box’s just don’t have enough space for games. Having to remove and reinstall games is infuriating. Not anymore with this. I’ve used 60% and had this since 2020. The transfer speed is not what it says it is! It’s slower for sure but still crazy fast. I use this for my Xbox one (original edition) and a Xbox one X. I am able to alternate. (I’d advise when playing a game to have it downloaded to the Xbox and not play through the drive. It works, just can lag sometimes. Great thing though is you can move games to and from Xbox and hard drive) oh looks like the picture too, very cool design.
