As the title reads. 2 weeks before it completely failed Windows would take several minutes to load. It progressively got worse over these 2 weeks. This 6-month-old drive was the last thing I expected to fail. Really disappointed and not sure if buying another SSD will even be worth it. My old school 3.5 drives are still working after 10+yrs. And this takes a dump in 6 months, that's some BS.

Instead, I did more research and found an obscure post that suggested connecting any WD drive to the system, so that the Acronis/WD installer would see a WD drive. I happened to have a external WD HDD, so I attached this to the system, and then the cloning software installed perfectly. Simple workaround, but it requires that you have another WD drive on hand to appease the Acronis/WD installer. (At the very least, the support folks should have known about this workaround, and offered it as an alternative to either relinquishing control of the system to them or going out and buying some cloning software.) Of course, the correct solution would be to correct the Acronis/WD installer so that it recognizes the SSD properly, even when connected via USB. I have purchased and installed several Crucial MX500 SSDs, and have never had any issues like this. This is the first WD SSD I have purchased and installed, and based on this experience, it will probably be the last.

Now this is just toying with my head. I grabbed another folder from another drive, this time one that had a little over 2GB worth of numerous small files. This transfer dragged on and on: ---------- 2GB Folder Transfer Test (Small Files): 65 MB/s ---------- The fact that there were just so many small files slowed it down tremendously, but somehow, large files it can transfer lightning fast. I can't explain it, but it must have something to do with the way the controller handles information being written to it. It's beyond my level of knowledge to say exactly what happened with the file transfers, but I haven't seen it before in any tests I've done on other SSDs. Regardless of how valid these results are, it is still a respectable SSD for any PC, especially if you're on a tight budget.

Previously I was employed in computer repair. Now, I am a network engineer in the industry for over 15 years. I saw many other brands fail, but rarely ever have I seen as Western Digital drive fail. Doesnt matter if its mechanical, SSD, IDE, SATA, SCSI, or NVME, theyre simply the highest quality brand. This drive is no different. Currently, I am running Ubuntu Studio, and I have it partitioned with the full drive for the primary partition, minus 64GB for the swap partition. I have been doing multitrack recording and other hard drive intensive applications without issue. I have had it one month at the time of this review. If anything changes in the future, I will edit my comments. If there are no further posts, consider this review a 5 star, through and through.

I've bought Western Digital drives exclusively for over 20 years now. I don't buy any other brand. For many years, back in the NCIX days, I would have bought my WD spinners from Newegg, but for some reason they always had bad reviews for the WD spinners they sold whereas everywhere else they were rock solid. The only thing I could deduce from this was somewhere along the Newegg route, be it the delivery, or the handling of the WD drives at Newegg, the drives were not treated with the care they should have. Why else would Newegg be the ONLY seller of WD drivers that had an abnormally high failure rate? So because of this I never once bought a WD spinner from Newegg. But now that I'm in the market for numerous SD drives, the rough handling issue with the spinners is ... MoreI've bought Western Digital drives exclusively for over 20 years now. The SD drivers are so light in weight that even if they are throwing boxes of them across the warehouse floor or dropping them on the floor, the packaging itself is more than enough to protect them. Even better is that of the last 3 WD SSD drives I've bought, the last 2 have been FROM Newegg because they have beaten out the all mighty A**z*n in pricing! That is a noteworthy feat in and of itself. As for the WD Blue SSD's, they are rock solid just as their spinners always have been for me. All the current NAND WD SSD's now come with a 5 year warranty (compared to 3 years when the WD SSD's first came out), and they are reliable and they just work. I haven't had a single issue with a WD SSD ever and I currently have 6 of them in operation going back over the last 2 years in different sizes ranging from 250GB to 1TB. So I'm super happy with WD's SSD's, and I don't ever see myself buying anything but WD for SSD's just as I did (and still do) with their spinners.

This SSD is VERY fast especially when compared against the 5400rpm 500gb SATA it was replacing. Immediately after swapping my power consumption dropped by approx 20% and I see and extra 30-40 min out of a full battery. The boot and shutdown times are around 30 seconds compared with 2+ min previously so that is a massive benefit. All in all I do not regret this purchase at all and I am planning on getting another for my 2nd drive. Works perfectly on my 2009 HP laptop with windows 7 but like any drive replacement there were a few hiccups in cloning and rebuilding the boot record. but that has NOTHING to do with the SSD and more of a windows issue. Drive arrived incredibly fast and was VERY well packed. I am completely 100% happy with this buy

I've replaced all my spinning hard drives with SSDs in the past year or so. The WD 2TB Blue replaced the last spinner in my old (2014) laptop, a Dell 5000 series, running Windows 10. I used an Aluratek drive duplicator to make an exact copy of the 1TB old drive (copying it bit for bit onto the SSD.) Once finished (about 3 hours), I installed the SSD into the laptop, and it booted immediately. I expanded the partition on the new SSD so the full 2TB could be utilized, giving me double the storage space. The new SSD breathes new life into the old laptop. It boots in seconds, and operates much faster. It also generates less heat, and it's quieter since the fan runs less. If you've got a computer that runs ok but is just slow, upgrading to a new SSD is likely to help!

I installed this SSD the day after it was delivered on a Dell xps8920 desktop as the boot drive, and used the Acronis cloning software WD offers on their website. The cloning went well, and the computer booted up incredibly fast, something I wasn't used to, but the computer only sees it as a 1tb drive. Trying to get WD support on the phone is exhaustive as it is frustrating. I never was able to get a support person on the phone, but had to listen to a constant repeating message that is as much of a torture to qualify as evil. Then WD sends me an e-mail asking, "How did we do?" Really, they did that, so I told them, truthfully. 5 eggs! I ordered this part to upgrade my Lenovo Ideapad. After some research I found this was the best performance SSD that would be compatible. The unit has some heft to it, indicating that the NANDs are well packed in there. My use case is for light duty personal computing. The estimated life span of the 1TB unit is well over 20 years for my purposes. I noticed an immediate drop of over 90% time required for disk intensive tasks. My boot-up time and launching of MS Office applications is near enough instantaneous. If you are fed up with long boot times and waiting for up to two minutes to launch apps, I highly recommend the WD Blue SSDs. Just make sure that you order the right type of connection to be compatible with your system.

The advantage is measurable but not noticeable (less than 5%), but still, this is a strong showing for WD. This was actually the cheaper of the two products at the time of purchase. The Samsung product is noticeably better built, holding the two in your hand this feels and looks chintzier, but these differences are ultimately inconsequential. If you have an open NVMe slot, stop reading this and just buy the NVMe. SSD's like this are staggeringly fast compared to their spinning-disk predecessors, but the speed is bottlenecked by SATA. If you care at all about performance, 6x speed for 1.5x cost should be a no-brainer. If you need the SATA i/o, 2.5" form factor, or extremely high capacity in a single drive, this is a fine choice, and it is a good value compared to other SATA SSD's. But looking at the storage market broadly and factoring speed against cost against capacity, this product is not a very good value. In my case my two NVMe slots are used and I needed big bulk storage for project files, so this does the job nicely. Two cons to know about this product: first, this 3D NAND storage does have a finite write/overwrite endurance. In most applications you will never run into it, but if your intention is to use this for something where it is getting written and overwritten constantly, e.g. a scratch disk for media creation applications, this might limit the lifespan of this product– though for all but the most extreme applications, it is probably still within tolerances for reasonable drive life. The other con is that WD hides a binding arbitration clause in the fine print of their manual. Unless you notice it and waste time and a stamp to opt out, you are deprived consumer protection that are considered normal in America (i.e. getting in on a class action suit were the product to prove defective). Lots of companies do this now, but it is a shady move suggesting low confidence in the product and low commitment to consumer satisfaction long-term. Par for the course today, I guess. TL;DR: Good showing as SATA SSD's go, but skip these entirely and go to NVMe if you can, at current prices they are a much more attractive option. Environment: MacOS 10.15.7 (Catalina), Gigabyte Z490 Vision-G, Intel i9 10850k. Application: Workstation, motion graphics (After Effects)
